It's Kind of a Funny Story
The book It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini is a wonderful book for teenagers to read. This book is about a boy named Craig who has been suffering from depression for some time now. He is overwhelmed with all of his school work since he has got into a very prestigious school with difficult classes. One night, Craig is feeling the lowest he ever has and decides that life is not getting any better for him, no matter how many therapy sessions he goes to. Craig is contemplating suicide, but instead of doing anything drastic, he calls the suicide hotline and they tell him to go to the hospital and check himself in. The majority of the book is set in the psychiatric hospital where Craig has admitted himself and the reader gets to meet many humorous characters that Craig comes in contact with throughout his stay.
I really enjoyed reading this book because it keeps the reader interested and wanting to find out more about Craig's life, and wanting to know what kind of funny and crazy things are going to happen in the hospital. Another thing I enjoy about this book is that it has a personal connection to many of its readers. Craig is a teenager who suffered from depression partly because of all his difficult school work. Although my school work has never made me actually depressed, I can see where it could push a person who is already down over the edge. Too much stress is never good for anyone. Craig also turns to drugs to try to hide his problems, just like many teenagers that I know. They do not realize that there is a better way of dealing with stress and hardships.
There comes a time in life when we as humans feel overwhelmed. This could be caused because of school, work, family, or friends. What we need to do is learn to handle this stress and know that turning to drugs and thinking about suicide will never fix anything. This book kind of teaches its readers this in a humorous way.
Vizzini is a good author, developing the story so that it is a fast read and easy to follow. The story begins with a mixture of flashbacks and current events that flow very well and help develop the story of Craig's life. These flashbacks help the reader to understand why Craig is depressed and how he deals with his depression. After that, the story tells about how Craig makes the decision to commit suicide, but checks himself into the hospital instead. From there, it goes through his recovery and tells about the relationships he formed with some of the patients there. Vizzini uses many literary elements, such as flashbacks, to help develop Craig's story. The reason he does this is so the readers will know the story behind some things that are said and done without them having to infer throughout the whole novel. Because of this, this book is a easy book to understand.
I think that everyone who is looking for something different should read should give this book a try. This is a wonderful story full of humor and friendships. However, some of the subjects are not the happiest subjects to talk about, like suicide for example, but Vizzini knows how to make everything fit just right so that it is not a sad story at all. This book has good times, hardships, and even a little bit of love for those who feel like the need a bit of love in their lives. I honestly think that everyone should read It's Kind of a Funny Story.
