The Game
By: Kristyn D’Angiolillo

Kyle Roberts tightened the tie of his bathrobe over his striped pajama pants, slipping his feet into house slippers and stepping through the front door of his silent suburban home. He was on his way to check the mail, just like every other morning of the week. His dog, a big floppy-eared Great Dane named Rufus, followed him out of the house and fell into step beside him, on his way to fetch the morning paper. Everything was going along in comfortable normality, just how Kyle liked to spend his days.
But when he got inside and started sifting through the usual stack of unwanted bills and junk mail, he found something out of the ordinary. It was a small manila envelope with his name and address printed neatly on the front. There was no return address. At first he was wary about opening it, not knowing what he would find. Then his natural inquisitiveness  got the better of him and he ripped the envelope open. What fell out onto the kitchen table was not at all what he expected, nor did it make any sense. It was an eye patch. An eye patch like the ones that the pirates wear in all the movies.
“What the…” Kyle muttered to himself. He looked inside the envelope to see if any other surprises were waiting for him. There was note inside. He pulled it out and opened it up, curious as to what the explanation for this strange package would be.

                Dear Mr. Roberts,
I am thoroughly delighted to inform you that you have been selected to participate in a game. A wondrous game where anything can happen. If you would like to learn more about this thrilling opportunity, please report to the Mudhouse Coffee Shop at seven a.m. on Sunday morning. Myself and the others will be seated at the third table to your left as you enter the shop. We will be awaiting your arrival with sincerest anticipation. However, if you do not present yourself by seven fifteen a.m., you will be automatically disqualified from the festivities.
Have a wonderful day!
                T.G.M
