This is a preface for my novel inspired by my friends and unfortunate events with both humans and horses.

I stared into his deep innocent brown eyes and shuddered. In this muddy field I was trapped staring at perhaps the only being who could understand me, but he was wild, dangerous. I shifted my feet in the mud as I slipped slightly closer down the hill; my once black boots were now a weak colour brown. The sky was tinged grey as he lifted his head higher from its low to the ground position his dark eyes never leaving mine. I smiled and shifted my hand at him slowly as I reached for him. He flicked his head slightly as the wind blew his mane away from his forehead, my heart dropped. The huge scar down his blaze made my heart catch in my throat; it appeared harm came in two ways. The way of harming another by force or action, cruel and unkind as this is there was another kind of harm. Self harm.
