Nick and Zac: Your Typical "Big Brother's Best Friend And Little Sister" Story

Novel By: Cherie Arlavine
Young adult

Three years ago she was a fourteen-year-old tomboy. And he was an eighteen-year-old senior who looked at her like a little sister. And she always thought of him as a buddy or big brother.
But then he had to go to college, in Europe. And three slow years passed by, and now he's back. Nicholas comes back expecting to see his best friend and the little tomboy he left.
Zac was looking forward to seeing her old buddy. The one she used to wrestle and play football with. But Nicholas returns, and things are just not the same.
Nicholas is twenty-one, and he's built, tan, and cultured.
Zac is seventeen and she's curvy and sexy. Not flat chested and sporty.
And neither of them seem to like the changes.
Zac and Nicholas end up fighting rather then sharing old memories. Just because neither of them are so good at accepting change.
Josh, Zac's older brother, is trying to figure what the hell is wrong. He and Nick went right back to old times.
But Reece, Josh's other friend, has a theory about why Zac and Nick are either really polite or fighting.
And Josh doesn't like his theory at all.

Six months later…

Nick had moved on, he realized. In time her memory had faded and he just saw her as Zac. And no more. And he was for certain that this time when he came home he could do it, he could just he friends with her.

As he drove toward Josh's house he smiled at all the familiar surroundings. And he saw the kids walking down the street, playing baseball. And he recognized me the moment he saw me. I was bundled up for the November chill.

He stopped the car and rolled down the window. "Hey Zac." he greeted.

When I looked at him his face turned to panic. My cheek was bruised, and my lip was busted. It looked very fresh too. He quickly got out of the car. "What the hell? What happened?" he asked, gently taking my face into his hands.

"I got into a fight." I murmured. "You should see the other guy." I joked half-heartedly.

"Who did this?" he asked.

I pulled my face away. "It doesn't matter. Can I get a ride?" I asked.

"Yeah of course." He walked around the car and opened the door for me. I slid in, and waited as he got back into the driver's seat. "Why did you get into a fight?"

"Because he hit me first." I said. "Reece is going to be so pissed at me."

"Reece? What about Josh. He's going to be furious."

"They both are, but Reece is going to be really pissed off." I muttered, staring out the window.

"More than Josh?" Nicholas asked skeptically. "What, is this a parallel universe or something?"

I looked at him as he smiled at his own joke. "Oh my God. Josh didn't tell you." I whispered. "I can't believe he kept it from you."

"Kept what from me?"

"Nicholas, Reece and I are together. We're engaged."

Nicholas pulled the car over suddenly and slammed on the brakes. He put the car in park and looked at me. "What?"

"Well, after you left, and after I wasn't grounded anymore, it kind of went back to before. I mean, after I started eating and sleeping again. You broke my heart Nick. But it doesn't matter anymore. Anyway, Reece and I were just hanging out one night, and we were talking about some old memories, and laughing and stuff. Well and then suddenly he grabbed me and kissed me and… Well we just kind of happened.

And I've known Reece all my life, and I know that I love him and that I care about him, and that he feels the same. So when he proposed a month ago, I said yes. We're waiting until our wedding night to sleep together too. It's kind of romantic actually."

"Zac-" Nicholas started to say.

"Nick. I'm happy. And we're over each other. So what does it matter? I thought Josh would have told you. Look," I held out my left hand to him. "He got me a ring. This isn't a joke. We're getting married in two months. A month after I turn eighteen."

"And what has Josh said about all this?"

"Nothing, really. Nicholas, I'm just not the same Zac I was the last time you saw me. I grew up a lot over the summer. I can honestly say that I'm not so much a kid anymore. I can talk about sex freely and openly, I can be an adult and I don't throw temper tantrums anymore. And I want to marry Reece. I want to be his wife."

"If you're so much of an adult now then why did you get into a fight?"

"I told you, he hit me first. What was I supposed to do? Let him kill me? I was just defending myself." I explained. "Will you please take me home? My face is really starting to hurt."

Nicholas sighed and put the car into drive. He didn't know what to think. Zac and Reece getting married? And why hadn't Josh told him about it… He let out a breath. He knew why Josh hadn't told him. He knew he would have tried to stop it.

But he was over her, he reminded himself. He'd gotten over Zac. He looked at her sitting in the seat next to him. He cursed to himself. He wasn't anywhere near over her.

"Oh shit." I muttered and sank down in the seat.

Nicholas looked to where I had, and saw a guy walking down the street, and he didn't seem to be hurt at all. "Is that the guy you fought with?" he asked, his voice terse now.

"Uh huh. Don't draw attention."

"He doesn't look hurt."

"He isn't. I got my ass kicked." I admitted with a mumble.

Nicholas pulled over the car. "If anything happens, drive away." he said then threw me the keys.

"Nicholas, what are you-" He slammed the door before I could finish.

He didn't waste time, and pushed the Kane who had beat me into an alleyway, and disappeared from view. I quickly scrambled out of the car, and ran into the alley. Nicholas was dropping to his knees when he came into view, over the body of Kane and started hitting it repeatedly, getting grunts out of the guy every so often.

I almost said something, but I knew there was no point. Nicholas wouldn't stop. Because he, Josh and Reece were the same when it came to me. Protect her and hurt anyone who hurts her. After a moment I couldn't hold back. "Nick stop! That's enough."

Nicholas got up, and I saw Kane was bloody, and nearly unconscious, but he would be alright. "Let's just go." I whispered.

Nicholas ignored me, and slapped Kane on his cheek to get his attention. "Hey, dumb ass. You tell anyone who did this or you touch Zac again, and next time I won't let you off so easy."

He stood up, left Kane lying there. Kane groaned and started to sit up and spit out blood. He was okay, to my relief. Nicholas took my arm and let me to the car. I sighed, and honestly I didn't feel bad for Kane at all after he had beat me and did it with a smile on his face.

Nicholas sighed. "Sorry." he muttered.

"Don't be. I'm not. I Just didn't want you to kill him." I muttered, ignoring the attraction I had toward Nicholas as a protector. I was over him, I told myself. I was marrying Reece. Of course I was over Nicholas.
