Josh came downstairs, with Zac’s house phone, cell phone, I-pod, I-pad and TV plug in his hands. Nick felt kind of bad now, and wondered how much trouble he’d gotten Zac into. He’d just been so mad.
“Josh, for what it’s worth, I think she was lying-” he started to say.
Josh held up a hand, his face set. “I know she was. She’s grounded for the rest of the summer for lying and for using someone. I made her break it off with Chet and she’s not aloud to see any of her friends. And that includes both of you. I don’t want either of you going in there unless I say you can, understand?”
“That’s kind of harsh.” Reece pointed out.
“You can leave.” Josh replied. “I’m the man of this house, I’m her guardian. She crossed a line. If you don’t like it then go.”
“I’ll say the same thing to you.” he snapped at Nick. “You know both of you are welcome to stay but I won’t hear anymore on this. I have made my decision and I’m not changing my mind. So if you don’t agree with it you’d better leave now or we’ll just end up fighting.”
Nick held up his hands. “No. I understand.”
“Me too.” Reece muttered.
“Good.” Josh said, then walked past them and into the kitchen. He pulled out a drawer then dropped the electronics in it. “She’s aloud to come out at meals and to use the bathroom. That’s it. So if either of you see her out of her room for any other reason I expect you to tell me.”
“I’m going to get breakfast ready.” he murmured then disappeared from view.
Reece gave Nick a look. “I don’t blame her for telling you that she was doing that stuff. You hurt her with all that, I just want to be friends, bullshit. You had no right to tell Josh, Nick.” he hissed under his breath.
Nick nodded for them to go outside. Reece opened the door and walked out, and Nick followed, then closed the door behind him. “I feel bad about it okay?”
“You’re twenty-one fucking years old Nick, and you tattled on her. Maybe you’re the one who needs to grow up. She’s only seventeen, and she was lashing out. Do you have any idea what it’s like to be a teenager and to be stuck in the house for the whole summer? For every miserable minute she spends in there I hope you know you’re responsible.”
“She shouldn’t have lied.”
“Oh fuck you Nick. I’ve heard you lie about things way worse than that to your own damn Mom. Don’t get all self righteous you asshole. You know I’m starting to see what about you pisses her off so much. You are a dick.”
Nick let out a breath. “I didn’t mean-”
“Shut your fucking mouth right now. I’ve only got one thing to say and that is you got her into this and you should be the one to get her out. And next time she does something like this why don’t you grow the fuck up and talk to her about it instead of running to Josh and telling on her? You’re the adult between you and her so why don’t you fucking act like it?” Reece grabbed the door and yanked it open and went back inside.
Nick sighed, and knew everything he’d just said was right. He had acted like a complete child. You never tell on someone. Not for something as dumb as that. He had known she was lying and had fed her to the wolves. He wasn’t going to defend her lying, but he should have confronted her himself and talked to her.
Well too late for should have. Now he had to fix it. But he’d have to give Josh a few days to calm down first. Because right now he’d just end up getting yelled at and kicked out. He didn’t want Josh pissed at him too.
