Kristal stared out the window, taking in the beautiful view of threatening clouds that promised a long night of thunder and rain. She could almost taste the rain, damp and earthy. A small knock came upon her ears, she got up from her seat next to the window and opened her door, seeing her younger brother and sister standing in front of it. She smiled and beckoned for them to come in. She checked her clock hanging next to her window, they had time before her stepfather, Derrick came home. She smiled as she looked at her younger siblings. They were as different as could be. Where her little brother Cael was fair skinned with dreamy blue eyes and gold, wavy hair, Melany was an exotic girl with olive skin, soft brown eyes and hair the color of melted chocolate that reached down to her lower back. As different as they were, it didn’t stop them from forming a wonderful brother-sister relationship. Cael and Melany were around the same age, except Cael was one year older. Cael was fourteen, and Melany was thirteen. Cael was Kristal’s biological brother, Melany was her younger stepsister.

“Hi Krista!” they chimed simultaneously. She smiled. They loved calling her Krista, and she let them. She waved a small hello. Cael and Melany looked at each other.

“Did ya do anything new Kris?” Cael asked eagerly. Occasionally, Cael called her Kris. She shook her head, then pointed at both of them, using her eyes to ask the question, “How about you two?”

“OMG, there is this super hot guy at our school!” Melany gushed. Kristal raised an eyebrow, looking at her younger sister slyly. Melany blushed while Cael snickered.

“Maybe I shouldn’t have said that…” she said glaring at Cael. Kristal shook her head, cocking her head to the side, asking silently for Melany to tell her more.

“Well, he is! He’s got the most gorgeous eyes that you can just sink in…. And his voice, god, every girl dreams of a guy like him! Krista, you’d totally love him! And he’s really nice and popular. I mean, it’s so hard to find people that are popular and nice at the same time.” Kristal pointed at Melany.

“Me..? No, I’m not that popular…” she said blushing. Kristal smiled knowingly and looked at her younger sister.

“Me next me next!” Cael yelled. He had made himself comfortable by sitting next to Melany in one of the many beanie couches that Kristal had in her room. She nodded and turned her attention to Cael.

Suddenly, a bang was heard from downstairs, and an angry voice yelled,

“KRISTAL!” Kristal looked terrified as she heard her stepfather stomp up the stairs. She looked at Cael and Melany, knowing that there was no way that she could get them out of her room without her stepfather seeing them. She ran to her closet door and opened the doors, beckoning for them to hide in it. Cael and Melany looked at each other, then shook their head.

“No Krista, we’re not leaving you with him. We know what he does, there’s no way we’re letting you face it alone.” Cael said. Melany voiced him. Kristal panicked, she begged them silently to hide in the closet. Her gentle brown eyes filled with tears as she knelt in front of them, holding their hands. Her mouth formed the words, “Please….please…” Melany and Cael stared at her helplessly, then they silently went inside the closet and closed the door. There was a small crack so that they could see and hear, not that they wanted to though.

Just in time, the door was knocked open and her stepfather stepped inside the room. By now, the tears that had gathered in Kristal’s eyes were gone, she knew she couldn’t let her stepfather see that she was crying. She stared at him coolly, her arms crossed over her chest. Her outward appearance was confident, yet she felt terrified inside.

“So, my little girl’s going to turn 16 soon isn’t she?” he said, leering at her. He reeked of sweat and beer. Kristal nodded, staring Derrick in the eye. His face turned an ugly shade of red as he slapped her across the face so that she fell on the bed behind her.

“Don’t you ever stare at me in the face you little bitch, understand?” he growled menacingly. She nodded meekly, trying hard not to scream as he began taking off her clothes. Her every instinct told her to fight back, and she did. She pummeled her stepfather, trying to get him off of her. But with  every struggle, she knew that she would be punished and that she would not succeed. Her stepfather was strong and became annoyed easily. Derrick knew that and gloated over it, that he was stronger and had control over how he could make her body feel. He savored every part of it, doing what he always did. And all the while, Kristal didn’t make a sound. As fast as it happened, it ended. He put her clothes back on and combed her hair while Kristal sat still, trying her best not to tremble and run.

“That wasn’t so bad was it honey?” he asked smoothly. “You see, I wasn’t raping you. I was showing you the pleasures of an adult. Now, don’t you want more darling? Wouldn’t you love me to show you more next time?” Kristal didn’t answer, and he yanked her hair back.

“I said, don’t you want more, sweetie? Or maybe next time, Melany could be the next one. And I’d have you and Cael watch. Even better, I could have Cael help me. Now darling, answer Daddy. Don’t you want more?” Kristal stared at the ground as thunder began to cackle. How dare he suggest that, to rape his biological daughter! And yet she knew that he wouldn’t hesitate to do it. The only thing that stopped him from doing so was because he was raping her already. She finally nodded. She heard the gasps from behind the closet door.

“Good girl….” he purred, “I’ll see you again soon.” He left the room with Kristal staring at the floor. Rain began to fall in soft drops, then poured down in cruel sheets. She heard the master bedroom door open and close, and her stepfather talking on the phone,

“Mhmm, of course I took her tonight. And I’d do it again, her body is sweet and fresh, makes me want more. Hmm? You want to watch me do it next time? Sure….” she heard no more as she clamped her hands over her ears. I need to get out of this place, she thought desperately. Every time, I hate him. I hate him…. I need to escape for a while. She ran from her room, slamming the door. She ran out into the rain, not caring where she ran or where she was headed. As she ran, she cried bitter tears. I hate him. He’s taken everything precious away from me…. And yet as she ran, she knew the real answer.

Still inside the closet, Cael held Melany as she trembled and wept silently into his chest. He stroked her hair, murmuring small words of comfort while tears ran down his cheeks as well.

“I hate him….” Melany whispered, “I hate him for what he’s doing to Krista, I hate him for what he is. I hate him for making me, for making me a daughter to that bastard. How can Krista look at me without hatred, how can she look at me and not hate me for behind his daughter? I hate him…..” she cried. Cael stared out the crack in the closet, and opened the door, gently carrying Melany to the chair that Kristal had been sitting in just minutes ago while staring out the window. Together, they watched her run as fast as her legs carried her.

“I know” he whispered. “I hate him too. For raping her, for threatening her. For taking away every single happiness that used to live inside Krista. I despise him for taking away her voice.” He said vehemently, his voice strong and full of hatred.

“But I hate him most of all for making Krista hate herself.” he said, and wept. “I hate him for making her turn against herself, for making her hate herself when she’s done no wrong.” he whispered brokenly.

As the thunder roared in their ears, and the rain came down cruelly on Kristal, it seemed as if the angels above cried. As if the angels cried along with Kristal, sharing her sorrow and pain.
