Things don’t feel very “normal” when you’re living in a loft apartment with only your older siblings, and you’re the youngest, and there are no parents. Things start to feel even weirder when your oldest sibling and his wife start to act like them. Your gay brother, Jeremy (aka Jared), has begun to take light of the situation and actually start to believe they’re more of parents than brother and sister. I, Alicia, remain a rebel. I still talk smack to Jason and gossip with Eliza in the bedroom and paint her toe-nails.
High school has begun. I wanted to feel a sick thrill once I set foot onto the over-sized lawn, but I couldn’t. During middle-school and throughout the summer I thought about it too much. Now, here I am and I feel nothing. I feel like I’m going to school. Everyone is in groups, beside trees, on benches, out on the open lawn. Everyone is in groups. Where’s my group? I don’t know, I don’t have one. I have to pitch in with my brother’s group and just sit there pretty while they gossip about the Kings and Queens and how completely sexy Queen Patricia’s skirt is today.
The thing today with friends are Groups. You can only have one, and if you don’t have one, you’re not going to survive high school. The Kings and Queens are the people who rise above everyone, even the teachers. Although the principal still makes the rules in the school, they’re the one that rule the school. You respect them, when they talk to you, you don’t ignore them and when they ask for something, do it. Kings and Queens consist only of the sexiest and most irresistible people on school grounds. Everyone just has to love them. Aces are the jocks; the football, lacrosse and your basketball players. Your Spades are the geeks and nerds; the people who do your homework for you and sometimes even charge you for it. There’s your Hearts, wannabes and complete desperate for the Kings and Queens. Jokers aren’t as high as King and Queens, but they’re still respected like them. They talk smack to the teachers and pull off your annual pranks.
I give Jared my thanks for letting me in on this info. He already knows it since now, he’s a Hearts Sophomore. If someone doesn’t have a title, you’re going to die in this hell-hole.
