Chapter 17 – A Reunion

They were at the neighbouring HDB blocks facing Raffles Girl’s Primary. Jun Xiong was very quiet. He’s probably too nervous to talk, Mara thought to herself. They had been waiting since morning but there had been no sight of Jun Xiong’s father yet.

“Are you hungry?” He asked Mara suddenly, breaking the long silence.

“No.” She replied as she gazed into his eyes. Did he see me kiss him earlier? Mara looked away quickly. She felt her heart beating faster and faster. Unknown to her, she was breathing harder.

“Mara, are you alright?” Jun Xiong placed his hand on her shoulder.

She flinched as if she had been touched by hot coal. She nodded her head, unable to shift her eyes away from her feet. Mara was flushed. His touch had sent warmth into her body. Her intense need and yearning for love were slowly fed through his concern for her. Do I love him? Mara questioned her heart.

“Dad.” Jun Xiong whispered suddenly, interrupting her thoughts. Mara did a quick search and spotted the ice-cream vendor setting up his temporary stall outside the school’s gate.

“He’s here! Come on, we’ll go over.” Mara started to move. However, Jun Xiong hesitated. He must be worried that his father does not want to meet him, Mara thought.

“I’m sure he’ll be overjoyed to see you.” She assured him with a gentle smile. He nodded. They made their way towards the ice-cream stall…

“Hi Uncle, your son’s here to see you!” Mara exclaimed. This had been the moment she was looking forward to.

Jun Xiong’s Dad scanned around. “Miss! Stop fooling with me! I am not one to be bullied!” He shouted at Mara. She turned behind. Jun Xiong was not there.

Where and why did he hide himself? Mara was perplexed.

“Uncle, he was right with me just a moment ago. I don’t know where he’s gone to.” She tried to explain.

“Please just go and leave me alone!”

“No! I can’t give up just like that. Uncle, please believe me! I will bring you to your son tonight. Can you please trust me just once more?” Mara pleaded with Jun Xiong’s Dad.

His eyes softened. “Okay. I will meet you here in the evening.”
