Chapter 27 – Answers

She’s my daughter.

Jun Xiong allowed the three words to sink in. He breathed heavily. Everything seemed crystal clear to him now. Why am I so stupid?!

The pocket watch was his. Jun Xiong’s father used to own Timeless Antiques. For his sixteenth birthday, Jun Xiong had received the pocket watch from his Dad. Since then, he had the watch with him at all times. It was specially made for him. The melody belonged to the song his Dad used to sing with him.

Jun Xiong stared at Mara. The similarities had been there all along. Why haven’t I noticed at all! She had the same hazel eyes as him. Her nose and mouth paralleled Thelma’s. This must be why I felt sorrowful when I first saw her. Jun Xiong had felt odd then. Their affinity had been destined…

Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock… Jun Xiong listened to the ticking of his pocket watch. The glass surface of the watch was no longer there. Jun Xiong finally realized what had happened to him when he died. This was the ticking that accompanied him in the darkness. His soul had been trapped within his own watch.

He recalled the shattering sound he had heard just before he found Mara. She must have dropped the pocket watch then, Jun Xiong concluded. Once the glass shattered, his soul was released…

That’s when we first met. Jun Xiong understood why they could communicate and even fall in love. Mara had been the only one who could see, hear and touch him simply because he had been the one she was searching for! Heavens allowed her to find me, Jun Xiong resigned to fate…

“Why are you keeping quiet again?” Mara’s voice was quivering.

“I… hmm…” He couldn’t speak. It’s better for her not to know, Jun Xiong knew Mara would be heart-broken. This is all my fault! His inner voice hollered.

Mara hugged him securely. “You’re scaring me.” She said meekly.

“Sorry Mara. I was just thinking how I could help you look for your father.” Jun Xiong uttered through his clenched teeth. How am I ever going to make up to her?

“You’re so sweet!” She grinned as she gazed at him innocently.

“Mara, what do you think of your father?” What do you think of me?

“My Dad? I think he must be the most amazing guy on Earth because my Mum had loved him so much.” Mara’s answer sent affection into his battered heart. Jun Xiong knew what he was going to give her. Tonight will be the last night I have with her.

He sighed. “I believe your Dad must have loved your mother very much too. Mara, can you do something for me tonight?”

“Yes?”

“I need you to sneak out and meet me by the small lake tonight.”

“Okay.” Mara smiled.
