I turned sixteen on February 1. I got late permission to go into school, since my dad had taken me to the DMV to get my driver's license. I got them on the first try, and since I didn't have a car to drive, yet, he dropped me off at school afterwards. I was happy to show them off.
"Now I'm hitching rides with you for a solid month," Cambree laughed as she held the tiny rectangle with my picture on it.
I smiled. "I can't wait to start driving you around." The sooner I was behind the wheel, the happier I would be, anyway.
Andrew was pretty happy for me. At lunch, he asked if we would all be hanging out tonight for my birthday.
"My party's tomorrow night," I said.
"Yeah, but don't you want to do something tonight?" he asked me. "Celebrate on your birthday?"
"Well, my family's taking me to dinner."
"What about afterward? I want to give you your present."
I sighed. "Andrew, you didn't have to get me anything."
He chuckled. "It's your birthday. Of course I did. And I want to give it to you tonight."
I wondered all day what Andrew's gift was. We'd been official as boyfriend and girlfriend for less than two weeks. I guess I should have expected a card or something, but he was making sort of a big deal out of it, so I was a little excited.
Detention was over now, so I was running with Derek everyday again. He told me he was excited about coming to my party tomorrow night.
"Glad someone is," I mumbled, tying my shoes.
He chuckled. "Don't tell me you're not excited about your own birthday."
"Today's my birthday," I told him. "I was plenty excited about that."
"OK, then. So why aren't you excited about your party tomorrow night?"
"It's not my party. It's Cambree's. She made the guest list with my mom. I didn't even want a big party."
"More guests, more presents," he teased. So I laughed. "Is the
walking Ken doll coming?
I scoffed. "Don't call him that. Of course Andrew's coming."
"You do realize the fact that you knew who I was talking about is almost as insulting as my calling him the walking Ken Doll, right?"
It was safe to say that Derek wasn't too keen on Andrew. I didn't know why he didn't like him. It wasn't like the two even knew each other.
My parents took me to Detroit to my favorite Italian restaurant for my birthday dinner. We were home by eight, and I was ready to leave with Andrew. I couldn't wait to see what he had planned for us tonight.
I was about to hurry upstairs to change when my parents stopped me.
"Sophia, hold it," my father said. "Where are you rushing off to? You have presents to open."
I chewed my bottom lip. I wanted to see what my aunts, uncles and grandparents had sent me, I really did, but my eyes kept darting to the clock. Every second spent here was another second closer to curfew, and less time I got with Andrew.
"Sophia, relax," my mother said. "You have plenty of time with Andrew. He's not even here, yet. Sit down, and spend time with your family on your birthday."
I sat, but I was getting more and more anxious. I'd spent all this time with my family already.
A stab of guilt shot through me as I watched my mother bring over my cards and gifts. I'd never become so annoyed at being home with them before. They just wanted to spend time with me on my birthday and see me open my gifts. I felt bad. But I still really wanted to see Andrew.
I tried to look interested as I went through my gifts. Mostly, all I got were cards and money. Olivia got me this really gorgeous necklace and a matching set of earrings with my birthstone. I was genuinely impressed.
"Thanks, Olivia!" I said, replacing the pearls I already wore with my sister's gift. "These are so pretty. I love them!"
Olivia beamed proudly. "You're welcome."
"Olivia saved up for a whole month to get you those," my mother said. "She picked them out before Christmas."
My sister really was the sweetest.
After that, I thought I was done. So I tried to leave.
"Wait, you have one more," my father told me.
I tried not to groan. I checked the clock again. It was close to 8:30 already. I was down to two and a half hours with Andrew.
My dad gave me an envelope. "This is from your mother and I."
I opened the card quickly, more because I wanted to go than because I was anxious to see what was inside. There was an Exxon card. I looked at it in confusion. "What's this for?"
"It's for this," my mother said, handing me a key with a smile. "Happy birthday."
It was a car key. I felt my jaw drop. "You got me a car?"
I easily recognized the Lexus symbol on the key as it was placed in my hand. "Oh my gosh, you got me a Lexus?"
My father chuckled. "It was made the same year as your sister, but yeah we did."
This was amazing. No more hitching rides from Cambree to school. I hugged my parents. "Thank you so much!"
"I hope you don't mind," my father said. "But it's still at the dealer. We had to hide it someway. We'll go pick it up tomorrow."
"I don't mind at all!" I said.
"And we've also talked about your curfew," my mom said. "Your wish for an extension is granted."
"11:15 it is," my dad said.
"Liam," my mother teased. "You can stay out until twelve."
I smiled. This was even better. The more time with Andrew the better.
When he picked me up, he asked how my birthday had gone. I wasted no time in telling him.
"I got a car!"
"Congratulations," he said. "Now you can drive me around."
He hadn't told me where we were going, yet, and I hadn't asked. He'd told me when he picked me up it would be a surprise, but it was killing me not knowing.
Finally, he pulled into the drive-in.
I gulped. "Uhm, what are we doing here?"
"I thought we could be alone," he said, parking his truck and shutting the engine off.
I wanted to be alone with Andrew, but everyone knew why people came to the old drive-in. It was for the ultimate privacy. I had just gotten used to kissing Andrew. Why would he bring me out here?
"So, happy birthday," he said, smiling. "Ready for your present?"
I was. Now he had my knees trembling, and not in that just-thoroughly-been-kissed sort of way, either.
I nodded. "Yes."
I wasn't sure why, but I half expected him to unzip his jeans. Luckily, he didn't. He didn't even start a make-out session. He reached into the glove compartment and pulled out an actual gift.
I let out the breath I didn't realize I had been holding.
Was I crazy? I must have been crazy. Paranoid. Yes, I was too paranoid.
I smiled and took the gift as he handed it to me. I wondered if being in a relationship was supposed to even be this stressful. Was I really supposed to worry about being alone with him. But again, I was being paranoid. We'd only been together a very short time. He wouldn't try anything so soon.
"So, my mom wrapped it," he explained. "I can't lie. I wanted it to look nice."
A guy who got his mom to wrap his girlfriend's birthday present couldn't be bad. Never.
"I'm flattered," I chuckled. I ripped the paper, and saw a small box. Could it be jewelry? It was way too soon for jewelry, wasn't it?
But when I opened the box, I was surprised to say the least.
"Oh my gosh, this is beautiful," I said, holding the small, crystal Tinkerbell in my hand. I was thankful it wasn't jewelry, but I knew even a tiny figurine like this, made of crystal was expensive. Maybe it wasn't real, though?
"You like it?"
I nodded. "I love it."
"Cambree told me you liked Tinkerbell."
I wasn't sure why that would have come up in a conversation with them, but this gift was perfect, so I wasn't going to question it.
"Andrew, thank you," I said.
He smiled, and leaned over, to kiss me. I didn't know why, but tonight, it felt different. Maybe it was because we were more alone than we'd ever been, and he'd just given me this great gift. I felt almost vulnerable to him. I didn't know how far he was going to push the boundaries tonight, and I found myself nervous.
And apparently he could tell.
"What's wrong?" he asked, pulling away.
I shook my head. "Nothing."
There was no way I was telling him I was panicking because he might try to have sex with me and I was afraid I just might let him.
He chuckled. "Why do you seem so tense?"
I shrugged. "Do I?"
"Yeah, you do."
"Why? You nervous about something?"
"No. I mean, a little bit."
"What are you so nervous about?" He smiled. "I don't bite. I mean, unless you want me to." Then he winked.
What the hell?
"Look," he said. "I know what'll calm you down." He reached into the glove compartment and grabbed a bag of weed. He was right. That would calm me down.
He lit two joints, and gave one to me. I took a long drag and held it in. I was getting better at this, I could tell. This was only my third time doing it, and already I could tell I was more relaxed than ever by the time I'd smoked the whole thing.
For a while, we just sat there and hung out. I wasn't so nervous anymore, so we started kissing again. He started slipping his hand underneath the hem of my shirt, and I didn't mind so much this time. I felt like seeing where this was going.
I thought maybe he'd ask me before he started moving too fast, but he didn't. Before I knew it, his hand was on my breast, on top my bra, and then suddenly, it was under it, and I wasn't stopping him.
I felt my bra loosen. It was unsnapped.
No. This was going too far. "Wait."
He stopped, but I saw the annoyance on his face. "What's wrong now."
"Nothing. I'm just not ready."
He sighed. "We don't have to have sex, Sophia. Thought maybe I could treat you for your birthday, though. I mean, I have been really patient with you."
I sighed in return. I guess he was right. He, or the weed, was making me feel guilty right now. He wasn't even trying to go all the way. He was trying to treat me for my birthday and here I was getting all Type A again.
"You have," I said. "I'm sorry."
He smiled. "You need to relax, baby."
He kissed my belly button and pulled out another joint, lighting it. Was he trying to kill me. I asked him.
He laughed. "Two joints will not kill you, Sophia. You'll feel good."
I trusted he was right. He knew what he was talking about. So I took the lit joint from him. I was already high, and I was about to get higher. I was nervous, because I really didn't need anything else to cloud my judgment tonight.
We shared this one. He took a few hits, and when it was gone, he was back on top of me.
"Relax," he muttered against my neck as his hand fumbled with the button on my jeans.
He didn't have to worry. I was relaxed plenty at that moment. Even as he started to slip his hand into my jeans and into my panties, I was relaxed.
I never even said no.
