As you can imagine, I was quite shocked. The girls bundled me into the car and on the way home I told them what the doctor said. Shay almost threw the car over and Hadley turned a suspicious green colour. After the shock wore off they were both ecstatic. Well, I wasn’t. I didn’t want a baby. Not now anyway. And not by a guy who dumped me and flew off to Australia. How the hell was I supposed to reach him? I only had his mobile number. No number for his parents or friends. Nada. I was in big trouble. My parents would flip.
When we got to my apartment I did what I always did in times of chaos. I grabbed my broom and Pledge and started cleaning.
“Laken, those fumes can’t be good for the baby. And you’re supposed to be resting. Not cleaning.” Shay said.
“Shut up, Shay. She’s pregnant. Not dying” Hadley intervened.
I kept polishing the TV stand and ignored them. I so did not want to talk about this now. My whole life was falling apart. I didn’t need a baby to confuse things even more. I’m not even the motherly type for crying out loud. I get all jittery around babies. I didn’t have the faintest idea how the take care of one.
“Laken, sit down.” Hadley said and grabbed and put me on the sofa.
“Right. Now tell us what you’re going to do.”
“What do you mean do?” I asked
“Well, you’re going to have to let Landon know. And his parents. And your parents.” She said.
“I haven’t got a number for them. And Landon’s mobile probably doesn’t work anymore. He got on the 9 ‘o clock flight.”
“Well, at least try his mobile.”
I got my phone and punched in Landon’s number. The subscriber you have dialled is not available at present.
“Voicemail. And I don’t want to leave a message. It’s not the kind of think you tell a guy over the phone.” I said.
“Don’t worry girl. We’ll sort this out.” Hadley said.
We spend the rest of the day watching old movies and eating chocolates. When they left, I got into bed and cried myself to sleep.
