I walked back into the hospital room to see Fin bouncing on Dad’s legs smiling. He looked up at me and cooed reaching for me. “You happy now baby?” I asked him picking him up. He smiled at me moving his arm but his face scrunched up again causing me to look at Dad with terror.
“Here let me see him.” I handed him back but Fin started to cry reaching back at me. “Or not.” He handed Fin back to me as he started to cry leaning his head on my shoulder. “Let me get his doctor.” I nodded bouncing him gently in my arms whispering to him. He turned his head to look at me with his father’s pout.
“Don’t look at me like that.” I pouted back at him. I leaned in to kiss his nose making him smile. “See you turned that frown upside down.” I giggled at him.
“So what seems to be the problem here?” Dr. Brown asked walking into the room holding a clip board full of papers.
“I think something is wrong with his IV.” I said looking over at him. He nodded.
“Let me see this little guy to see what’s wrong.” I walked over to the crib and put down the bars before laying Fin down. Dr. Brown pulled on a pair of gloves walking over to Fin. Fin looked at him as he started to take the bandage off of his arm causing him to start to cry. He pulled it off completely before looking over at me.
“What’s wrong Dr. Brown?” I asked looking over at him as I gently stroked Fin’s hand.
“Well it looks like the nurse put this needle in wrong. This would be why it is causing him pain.” He gently pulled the needle out of his arm causing Fin to start screaming. “I’m sorry buddy. I’m sorry.”
“Hey Fin it’s alright.” I whispered to him quietly pressing my lips to his head. He looked at me as I rubbing my fingers through his hair. “It’s almost done sweetheart.”
“Alright now all we have to do is wrap this back up and he should be better soon.” He smiled at me as Fin stopped crying as I went over to pick up his pacifier and slipped it into his mouth. He took my finger into his hand and held on as he looked at the doctor. “Oh don’t look at me like I just tortured you.” He just sucked on his pacifier just looking at him.
“Doc I might be going on a limb here but I don’t think he likes you.” I giggled at him as he shook his head.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah Bailey tell me something I don’t know.” He winked at me before walking out of the room. I looked over at Dad where he was sitting watching TV. Dad looked over at me and smiled. I sat down in the rocking chair and picked up Fin laying him down on my chest. I wrapped a blanket around him and gently rocked him.
“Where’s Taylor?” Dad asked changing the channel.
“He had a doctor appointment and wanted me to come stay with Fin.” He nodded.
“Everything alright with his leg?” I shrugged as Fin moved around getting comfortable on my chest before closing his eyes and sucking away on his pacifier closing his eyes listening to my heartbeat.
“I’m not sure. He said it was going to be the doctor to look at his knee but he should be able to get another opinion on his leg.” Dad nodded.
“That’s good sweetheart.” He nodded as a silence fell over the two of us.
“Dad?” He looked over at me.
“Do you think that I made a mistake?” He stood up and sat on the chair closest to me.
“Made a mistake where?”
“Made a mistake at taking on, Taylor, and the baby?” I asked looking down at Fin.
“Do you think you did?” I looked up at him from under my eyelashes.
“No, I don’t think I did the wrong thing.” Dad nodded.
“Why would you think you have?” He asked running his eyes over my face.
“I just think that other people think I will. Rushing in with Taylor and taking a baby at such a young age. I won’t be 19 for another month. Isn’t that young?” Dad sighed leaning back in his chair.
“Answer this one question Bailey. Do you love Taylor?” I looked down at Fin.
“Yeah I do. I really, really do.” He nodded.
“Do you love Finley?” I reached my hand up to gently move the hair out of his face.
“Yeah. I do. I barley know him yet I love him.” I smiled. “He is this precious little being that needs love and I just want to love him back.” Dad put his hand on the side of my face.
“You aren’t making a mistake Bailey.” I could feel the tears forming in my eyes.
“But how am I supposed to know I’m doing the right thing?”
“Because you know in your heart you’re doing the right thing baby. You are making the chose here. You need to see that no one else can make this chose for you. You know when I joined the Corps I didn’t if I was making the right choose with my life. But I felt it. I knew in my heart that I had to do it. And look where it lead me. It lead me to my beautiful wife who gave me three perfect boys and my little girl. I can’t regret my chose I will. You need to chose that Bailey. You need to see that what you do dictates what your life will be. You’re a great person Bailey, and love you for it. But no one can chose this for you. You need to. But you don’t want that what if in life.” He pressed his lips to my forehead.
“Dad what would that ‘if’ be?” I asked quietly.
“If you chose to leave Taylor because of the baby what would have happened if you stayed with him.”
“Do you have a ‘what if’ in your life?” He nodded sadly.
“I do but it wasn’t my choosing Baby.” He smiled sadly.
“Like if your Uncle Wyatt didn’t die when I was younger. Like if you never got cancer what would you be like. I didn’t have a chose for my ifs in life. You do. I don’t want you to regret it.” He gave me a stern look. “You need to focus on that Bailey. Think this over. If you don’t, you might regret it for the rest of your life.” I looked down at Finley one more time before pressing my lips to his head. I had a lot to think about…..
……It’s been about a two months since that day in the hospital. High School was over and done with Jenna in spending as much time with Colt before he left for boot camp. I haven’t seen Jayden much but I’m kind of happy I haven’t because I have been taking care Fin as he started to grow as well as work and school but its all good now. I moved in with Taylor about a week after graduation and am loving it. Mom thankfully took to the idea of Fin and Taylor being part of the family but He hasn’t been over the house while Dillon and Bentley where home. This was the first time they will meet. I picked Fin up off the floor of the apartment as he cooed crawling around the floor. “You need to sit still for just a minute buddy.” I laughed at him putting my sketch book into my bag. Fin squirmed in my arms wanting down but I picked up my bag that had everything I needed and slipped him into his car seat. I picked up the car seat and made my way out of the room and out to the car. I slipped him into the back before making my way to my old home. When I pulled into the drive way Dad smiled at me from where he was getting out of his truck.
“Hey Kid I’m happy your home now.” He hugged me and looked into the back seat of the car. “Hey look at this little man.” He smiled and opened the door unsnapping his car seat picking him up. Fin was about 8 nearing 9 months old. He loved Dad and Mom. I took my bag out of the back and made my way to the front door with Dad. “Where’s Taylor?” He asked as we walked into the house.
“He’s working but he should be here later.” Dad nodded bouncing Fin as he smiled at me happily.
“That’s alright. Let’s go to the others.” Dad said opening the back door as Dillon and Bentley ran around the backyard.
“Bailey!” Mom smiled hugging me taking Fin out of Dad’s arms as Wyatt hugged me, his hair cut and ready for when he leaves for boot camp in the next couple of days.
“Hey Sis.” He smiled pulling back. “How are you?” He said looking over at Mom as she fussed with Fin as Dillon and Bentley came over to see who was in Mom’s hands.
“I’m good. It’s been great really living with Taylor.” Wyatt nodded wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
“I’m glad you’re happy sis.” He kissed my head
“Thanks Wyatt.” I smiled at him as Bentley leaned up to look at Fin.
“It’s a baby!” He said wide eyed looking at Dad. Dad laughed.
“Yeah Bentley it is a baby.” Bentley nodded up at Dad looking Fin over again. The next couple of hours were all fun and games while everyone talked and joked. Even when Taylor came walking in with his leg in a brace everyone treated him like one of their own. It’s heartwarming. I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket making me pull it out and flip it open the read the text message.
**New Message** Unknown**Hello Bailey, remember me? Well I’m the guy you met at the board walk couple months ago. Well you see you might not know me but I know you. Trust me here sweetheart, you will know me. Give it time. Give it time. You will see me again. But I won’t tell you when. Just know that when you see me, you will never forget it. **
I closed my phone and looked up at my family as they joked around and laughed. I looked at Taylor as he walked over to me. “You alright baby?” I looked over at the family as they smiled.
“Yeah Baby, I’m fine.” I forced a smile and kissing him. “I love you.”
“I love you too baby.” He smiled laying his head on top of mine. I love my family and I love Taylor and I love Finley my little boy. All I hope is that this ‘unknown’ person doesn’t do something to ruin this…..
