This is my first try at writing a novel, please tell me how I could improve my writing. I would really appreicate it! Thanks, Imogen Claire.Chapter One:
"TAYLA! WAKE UP! Do you want to be late for school?" my sister yelled impatiently.
"Just 5 more minutes!" I replied sleepily.
"That's what you said half an hour ago!" She replied.
"Fine, I'm coming." I groan, lifting off my sheets and putting my pillow back onto my head.
So there are some things you need to know about me, first of all I am a normal seventeen year old, well I was. My mum died when I was four, and her passing left my dad in a wallowing hole of self-pity. Dad has been depressed for the last thirteen years. My older sister, Hannah, practically raised me. My dad has been absent, travelling around the world looking for his next true love. He hasn't found one yet, obviously.
"Come on sleepy pants!" She yelled.
"Wait, can I smell pancakes?" I asked hopefully.
"Well since you have taken forever to wake up, I thought I may as well do something with my time!" She informed me.
"Since you made pancakes, I will get up." I replied rather automatically.
A quick warning, I really looooooove pancakes, I could eat them every day!
"Welcome to the World of the Living" Hannah said rather sarcastically.
"Mmmmmmmmmmm" I say m at a tone that gives away my longing to be back in bed.
I quickly scoff down my pancakes, and run back to my room, to get ready for school.
I chose to wear my tight skinny jeans, a baggy top, and my knee-high converse. As you can probably tell I am not one of the "Popular Girls", or as I call them, "the sheep".
"Hannah! What should I do with my hair, it's being impossible again!"
"Well you can straighten it or I could do my famous plaits?"
"I'll go with the straightener"
Hannah's plaits are the worst plaits of all time. The one time I agreed to them, it took me three days to untangle my hair. She is the worst at doing other people's hair; hers just sits perfectly every day. This complements her perfect skin tone, her perfect figure, and her beautiful green eyes. Sometimes I envy her. So do most of the girls in town, since practically every guy is in love with her. Family are so annoying. But that's what they're for, right?
"How long does it take to straighten your hair?" My sister asks blandly.
"You have no idea. I am just finishing it now!" I groan.
"Good," She replied "Rena will be here shortly."
Rena is my best friend. She is massively quirky. With her short, crazy black hair with red streaks and her green eyes, she would belong in any fashion magazine. Also she is an amazing guitar player and actress. Any person, who does not like her is missing out on so much fun. Just never agree to any of her crazy schemes, you don't know what will happen. I am still trying to get rid of that disturbing memory of a time, when I was stupid enough to agree. We went sky diving, not a good idea for me, as I'm deathly afraid of heights! She told me we were going for a plane ride! I didn't speak to her for two weeks.
"Hey, babe. You ready to go to school?" I hear Rena shout out from downstairs.
"I'll be there in a minute!"
"You don't have a minute, I'm coming up now. I haven't seen you in like forever." said Rena, suddenly making her way up the creaky staircase.
"You saw me yesterday!" I replied, tying my right shoe into a cute, neat, little bow.
"Well, it was twenty-four hours ago. Now come and give your bestie a hug!" Rena yells out.
I quickly obey, before she has a chance to maul my bedroom door. That has happened before. I wouldn't expect less from her. What are best friends for?
"You two had better be going off to school. I hear that they have a surprise for all of you." Hannah tells us.
I quickly give Hannah a hug. And run out of the house like a mad thing. Properly because I am one. It also helps that Rena is draying me out of the house.
"Oh Tayla, you look amazing today! As always." Rena exclaims.
"You look way better than me! I am just a blob compared to you."
"Tayla, daaarling, you are the most beautiful girl in the school. No one compares with you. I bet you could score Jack Williams, if you really wanted too!"
Jack Williams is the best singer in the world! He wrote "Someday", but he was taken, by Candi Carter, the most popular female artist of the year. I don't think she will ever be a good singer. All she does is rap, in this crazy fast voice.
"Remember, he's taken! And you can't say he would leave Candi for me. She is way prettier than me!" I complain.
"Not really, but she has no personality. He would jump to the moon for you." Rena argues.
"Can you two please stop talking about your love lives?" my other best friend Jasper says.
"Well, you were the one who's listening to us! Why don't you go talk to your other friends? Oh wait what other friends?" Rena says.
She has a massive crush on Jasper, though she won't admit it. She knows he has only eyes for me. But he is too much of a brother to me. It just wouldn't be right for me to date him. Jasper has caramel hair, cut in a sort of emo way, but he has it all messy. With his bubbly blue eyes, he is tall, lean and getting quite muscly. He likes to dance, but he is a better singer (he is way too shy to sing in front of people). I really wish he would sing with me. We would sound so good. Our voices would complement each other's.
"Rena! For once, can you be nice to Jasper?" I complain.
"Well no." She replies.
"It was a rhetorical question."
"Rena, be nice that would be a first." snorts Jasper.
Rena gives him the filthiest stare I have ever seen. If looks could kill, he would have just been incinerated into tiny pieces of ash.
"Come on lets go to English. We don't want to be late; Ms Claire would give us detention. Do you really want that? I thought not!"
"Fine. Way to ruin the day, Tayla!" Rena complains.
"We had better hurry!" warns Jasper.
As we run through the school (I forgot to mention we do a lot of running, mainly because of Rena) I nearly run into Bella Kent, the most popular girl in the school. She has a curvy figure, on thin body. Her natural blonde hair cascades down her back. When she sees me coming straight towards her, her blue eyes widen and she quickly gets out of the way. You see we have a little agreement; we stay out of each other's way. I really love this agreement; it means I don't have to don't have to put up with her 'crowd'. They think that they are way better than us; I really can't stand people who think they are better then everybody.
"Thank god, we are on time! No detention for moi!" Rena yells, whilst throwing her fist in the air. Her fist manages to hit the light, which shatters into tiny pieces, just as Ms Claire walks into the room
"RENA ANDERSON! GO TO THE PRINCIBAL'S OFFICE NOW!" Ms Claire shouts.
"Again. Really? I think the receptionist should know my name by now." Rena says cheekily.
"I said NOW!"
"Fine, I'll go now" Rena replies coldly.
Rena storms out of the room and slams the door, extremely hard.
"Sorry for that little distraction, now have you all read Chapter One of War and Peace?"
"No, I fell asleep on the first page!" I hear Rena yell from outside of the door.
"Calm your farm, I'm going" Rena half-yells.
Believe it or not, Rena and Ms Claire don't get on very well. I can't remember a time when Rena sat through the entire class without getting sent out. She is too bad for her own good. And she wonders why, she doesn't get A's (well except in music, Mr Thompson loves her and her quirkiness).
"Now, Tayla, would you mind reading out Chapter One for everyone?" Ms Claire asks.
"I would love too." I reply, with a Cheshire grin on my face.
"Goody-two-shoes" Jasper mutters under his breath.
"Thank you for that intriguing conversation, would you care to share it with us?" Ms Claire.
"He was just saying, how much he loves this book! Weren't you Jasper?" I say, saving Jasper's life.
"You took the words right out of my head" answers Jasper.
Once English was finally over (with no sign of Rena) I had my favourite subject Music! Jasper had Dance and Rena had Music with me. I still wish Jasper would get over his stage fright and sing with me, but I don't think it will happen anytime soon.
"Earth to Tayla! Hellloooooo there, have you come out of your daydream?" Rena asked me.
"Well good, it's time for your solo performance!" says Mr Thompson.
"Wait, that is today! I thought it was on Friday!" I stuttered.
"Nope, it's your turn to take to stage. What song are you singing?" Mr Thompson sings out.
"Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift."
"Ohhh, I love that song! Do you want me to play the guitar for you?" Rena asks.
"You know the answer Rena!"
As Rena tunes her guitar, I start warming up my vocal chords. My voice hasn't been too good lately, as I have just recovered from a cold. As I listen to it, I am completely out of tune. This won't be pretty.
"Okay, I'm ready!" Rena yells.
I used to be a competitive singer, entering all these competitions. I won a few of them, but I got sick of all the backstage preparations, all the make-up and costumes. I just wanted to be me. I managed get it into my head that if I was a good enough singer that Dad would come back and love me. I don't even remember what he looks like.
Before I know it, my song has finished and everyone is applauding me.
"That was brilliant, Tayla, I didn't know you could sing!" Mr Thompson says, with a look of awe on his face.
"Thank you. It's been a long time since I've sung in front of people."
"Well that is a shame; a voice like yours must be shared with others. Now I have some very exciting news!" Mr Thompson announced.
'What is it?" Rena exclaims, while doing her happy squeak.
"Well we have prepared a talent show for everybody! There will be professional talent scouts there. It is compulsory for all of you to enter, with one of Miss Duncan-Kemp's students!" announced Mr Thompson.
At this stage, Mr Thompson is bouncing on the balls of his feet, looking like a child who has just been given candy for the first time. Miss Duncan-Kemp is the dance teacher, she teaches Jasper's dance class. Maybe if I could get him to sing with me. Rena would be playing her beloved guitar. We could win this show!
"When do we have to perform?" Rena asks casually.
"You have til Friday to practice."
"But Friday is two days away!" I complain.
"Well you better start rehearsing! And it has to be an original song!"
The loudest groan I have ever heard comes from the entire class. I am terrible at writing songs!
"Well I was thinking I could be on my electric guitar and you could be singing and dancing with Jasper." exclaims Rena
"Do you think I could get Jasper to sing with me, our voices suit each other?" I ask.
"Maybe, but you'll have to use your puppy dog eyes. He's a sucker for them!" she says.
"If I remember rightly so are you!" I tease.
