"Hey, its Leila right?" says a husky voice. My head is in my locker as I grab my PE bag, I nearly whack my head on the open door as I spin round in shock. Facing me is Darren, one of the most popular and attractive boys in the school. One of the boys who has never said a word to me, other than telling me I was in the way of the paints in Art. But here he was, hand leaning against the wall and smiling his dazzling smile at me. "Y-yeah. I'm Leila." I mumble awkwardly. I can feel my cheeks going red. He runs his hand through his curly blonde hair, blue eyes sparkling at me.
"We had Art last year, right?" I nod; I'm still too astounded that he is talking to me to make a sound. Why is he talking to me? It must be a joke, he is going to say something horrible and then all his friends will gather round and laugh at silly little Leila. Darren had only ever laughed when his friends said things, he never said anything himself. But maybe now he was going to. "So, are you doing anything tonight?" I almost scoffed at his question. As if I would be doing anything on a Friday night. As if I would have a social life. I shake my head, causing a few strands of hair to come loose from behind my ear. He lifts his hand, hesitates, and then brushes my hair aside. Every romantic film I'd ever watched had this exact moment in it.
"Well if you're free, maybe you'd like to come out with me? We could go for a coffee, and then there's a party. I'd love it if you'd come with me." My head goes fuzzy. Surely this isn't happening, there must be a catch. That's what my head is screaming at me, saying that this will end badly. But for some reason, some unknown reason, I smile at him and said yes. "Great! Well shall I meet you outside Starbucks, the one in town, at 7?" I seem unable to mutter a single word, confined to nodding at this dazzling boy. I cough to prevent my voice squeaking. "Yeah, sure, that's fine." My voice goes a bit high towards the end, oh god I am such an embarrassment. Surely he would retract his offer right now and laugh in my face.
He pauses. I mentally prepare myself for the laugh and the 'I can't believe you seriously thought I would be seen on a date with you.' I'm certain my shoulders visibly tense and my lips, which I am squeezing into a tight line, disappear from my face altogether. The laughter doesn't come though. When I allow myself to look up at him, he is gazing at me with his sparkly eyes and a smile is playing on his lips. "That'll be fantastic. I'll see you there then. Have a nice day. See you later. Oh, what's your number? Y'know, in case you're late or something."
"Oh yeah, my number." I fumble round foolishly in my bag looking for my mobile. "Ah here it is. Yeah, my number, its 07769966245." He taps the keys whilst I stand, agonized, still unsure if this is a joke or not. He smiles at me. "Great. I'll text you in a sec, so you have mine. See you tonight, Leila." He smiles his breathtaking smile one last time and leaves. My hand reaches out to grab my locker and I steady myself. I couldn't believe this was happening. Had I just made that entire thing up? I'm beginning to wonder if it had been a daydream, when my phone buzzes. The text reads 'Hey beautiful, its Darren. See you tonight xo' I save the number, heart pounding. No boy had ever asked me on a date; No boy had ever even called me beautiful. And yet here was a boy, not just any boy but one of the hottest boys in the year, a boy who could get any girl he wanted. And he seemed to want me. My entire body feels like it is floating and my stomach is fluttering wildly.
