............................ All I could hear was the sound of cleats running up the hall as Matt came to the nurses’ office followed by Jason.
“Autumn you okay” he said as the EMT’s put me on the gurney.
“Were going to take her into get her checked out” one of them said looking Matt up and down. “Your Dad’s a cop right” Matt nodded.
“Yeah he’s been on nights so he turns off the phones” Matt said shrugging can I go with her.
“Sure” One of the EMT’s nodded.
“Dude I’ll let people know” Jason said.
“Thanks” Matt nodded walking out after us they put me in the back of the ambulance Matt sat next to me and reached for my hand linking his fingers with mine.
“I have to ask this so the doctors know some history okay” The younger of the two EMT”s said sitting next to Matt with a chart as he hooked an IV into my arm.
“Have you taken anything” he said looking down at his form I felt Matt squeeze my fingers.
“Last night I took three E’s” I looked down.
“Three with what” he asked looking from me to Matt.
“Vodka” I sighed I looked at Matt His face streaked with dirt from football he was chewing on his bottom lip something he’d done ever since he was little when he got nervous or scared the EMT looked at Matt.
‘Did you do it as well” He asked.
“Hell no” Matt said defensively.
“So it sounds like your coming down hard” The EMT said putting his hand over my free one “Why do it, you’re a beautiful girl you shouldn’t need to have to take crap like that”.
“It numbs life I can be someone else for a while” I sighed Matt leaned forward and rested his head against mine.
“I know what happened to you was something I never ever want to happen to anyone” The EMT said going back to his sheet “But honey taking those things won’t make it any easier to deal with I looked at him “Yours is a face I’ll never forget I was one of the first on scene after the accident” I felt tears welling up in my eyes.
“It’s hard to deal with it everyday” I sniffed.
“I can only imagine what you guys have to go through on a daily basis” he smiled “But you need to let people help you not let idiots bring you down and give you drugs” we pulled into the hospital and the wheeled me into the E.R. the nurses hooked me up to a couple of different things. “Hey I don’t want to get called to be the one picking you out of the gutter with an overdose okay” he sighed putting his hand on Matt’s shoulder “Don’t let your little sister go through this alone dude”.
“I’m not going to” Matt nodded as the EMT”s walked out the nurse put a chair next to the bed for him to sit down I looked at him he stroked my hair. “I haven’t told you this in a long time Autumn but I love you” he sniffed “Well get you through this I promise”.
“I’m scared I can’t get out of this” I closed my eyes.
“I’ll be right behind you all the way sis” I promise “and if I see Bret I’ll kick his skinny drug dealing ass into the middle of next week” he put his forehead against mine. “What happened last night”.
“He got mad when I was dancing with Drew” I sighed.
“That was all” Matt said.
“Before we went out I was supposed to make nice for some guys he was trying to do business with and when I went up to the office he was doing a line of coke from some naked chick” Matt sat back and looked at me “so I got pissed because I knew he’d go a lot further than that with her if it moves he’ll screw it”.
“So when Drew started talking to you you thought you’d just have a good time and dance” Matt asked.
“I’d been in the bathroom with Bryony and Maggie and neither of them recognized me so I thought I could get away with it even you hesitated”.
“Yeah I wasn’t sure till I helped you down, even with contacts changing the color of your eyes I knew it was you right away” he smiled “It’s a twin thing” he said rubbing the back of his neck “And I have to say when I realized it was you it was a bit more than I need to think about” he said making me smile “If it was another girl then Wow I would have been jealous of Drew” he leaned forward resting his arms on his knees “Why did you all of a sudden bolt and disappear”. I sat forward and moved my hair “When did you get that” he said shocked.
“Two months after the accident” I shrugged “Drew saw it and made a comment about it and I got scared so I went to find Bret to take me home” I looked down at the finger marks on my arm’s and took a deep breath “He let me know he didn’t like what I was doing he took me out the back of the club and…” I trailed off feeling the bruises on my leg as I moved them. “Let’s just say I ended up on my hands and knees picking up my clothes from the floor” I watched all the color drain from Matt’s face.
‘Did he force you to…” Matt couldn’t bring himself to finish the sentence, I closed my eyes and nodded.
“I’m no virgin Matt” I said breaking down “But I didn’t ask for that he hurt me” Matt got up and sat on the bed next to me and pulled me into his arms it had been so long since either Matt or Dad had held me like this it made me cry harder months of pain coming out in one whole teary mess” Matt looked round to see Dad standing in the doorway of the room totally white faced his eyes bloodshot.
“No one is going to hurt you again I swear to you” Matt said still not taking his eyes from Dad “Even if it ends up just being you and me Autumn” he lay me down blocking my view of the door so I couldn’t see Dad. “Look you try to close your eyes for a whole I need to get in touch with someone to bring my clothes and cell phone from school” I nodded as he got up “And I’ll see what the doctor says” I closed my eyes feeling more safe and at easy that I had in a long time……………………………….
