……………….. The next few weeks were so hard I finally managed to get my head back into the game I kept busy with school work and soccer only difference was now practice had to take place inside the gym because we’d gotten a huge Ice storm I was sitting doing some school work waiting for the guys and girls to turn up.
“Well you got here early” I looked up as coach walked over.
“I got done with school early” I said closing my folder. “So I thought I’d get part of an assignment done”.
“Heard anything from Ben or your Dad yet” Coach asked.
“No nothing yet, it’s tough but I know sometimes finding phone isn’t the easiest thing to do” I shrugged.
“Considering we are in the off season right now, how would you feel about running the practices” I said “I have to help with the football team, their assistant coach just got deployed”?
“Sure as long as you trust me enough to keep them going” I laughed as the teams walked in.
“You we’re an awesome player and you’ve run a lot of the practices on your own and the kids seem to like the way you do it” he smirked “And It’ll mean you get an increase in your pay”.
“I’ll do it then” I nodded shaking his hand. Coach started to talk to the teams about me taking over Kate grinned at me. I started everyone of warming up felling quite pleased knowing I was now making more money for stepping up as acting soccer coach all I could think of was letting Ben know as soon as I got the chance.
“You’re thinking about my Brother I can tell by your face” Katie smiled walking over to me.
“Yep: I nodded “How you getting on with him being away”.
“It’s not as bad as I thought it was going to be” she shrugged “I think him being away at boot camp got me used to not having to fight for the bathroom with him every morning” We carried on with practice I was taking Katie out for dinner and meeting Nick and Ollie and Dylan there, we went in to the restaurant and sat down to wait for the others.
“We made it” Ollie laughed sitting down “Even if Nick almost spun the car off the road”. I looked at him.
“I hit an ice patch” Nick shrugged “But I kept it on the road”. We sat talking and eating Dylan was watching one of the T.V’s behind where we were sitting I watched as the color drained from his face.
“Dly’s you feeling okay” Nick asked nudging him looking up to where Dylan was looking at the T.V. we all turned our attention to the screen noticing that the News was one with the headline reading 6 U.S. Marines killed by a roadside bomb almost the entire restaurant was watching the screens now I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed mom.
Me * Are you watching the T.V.
Mom * yeah Dannie just called me; I want you guys to come home.
Me * you haven’t got a visit have you.
Mom * no god no Tess you need to remember there is a lot of guys out there at the moment
Me * I know, we’ll be home in the next 20 minutes.
I looked at the others as I hung up the phone.
“Mom wants us home” I said paying the bill. “Katie you can come back as well” we all left the table and headed for home.
We walked inside Aunt Dannie and Sami were both there.
“Has anyone heard anything” Nick asked sitting down on the couch.
“Your Mom is on the phone with your Dad at the moment he called just after you did” Sami said looking at Nick “We’re waiting to hear what he has to say”
Mom walked in.
“So what did Logan say” Dannie asked.
“They were miles away from it when it happened all of the guys are safe” she said “they didn’t know the guys that were involved”
“When will they get to call again” I said leaning n the back of the couch.
“Your Dad said by the weekend things will be to the point where they’ll be able to call” She smiled “He said Ben’s doing good” I smiled feeling relief coming over me…………………………………..
……………………. “You manage to speak to Amber” Toby asked as Dad walked back in to them.
“Yeah, apparently the kids were all out for dinner and they saw it on T.V.” Dad sighed sitting down on his bunk “Ben still out in Patrol” Toby nodded.
“I don’t think they’ll know about it yet”.
“3 weeks in and it’s already shaping up to be as bad as last time” Dad said shaking his head, as Ben walked in with Eric and Gabe and 4 other guys.
“Speak of the devil” Toby smirked.
“What” Ben said flopping down exhausted.
“Did you guys hear about the guys that have been killed” Dad asked.
“Yeah we got the call while we were out” Eric nodded “I just hope it didn’t reach the girls yet”.
“Already has” Dad said getting up and heading for the door “Don’t worry they know were all okay I got to call the phones are working temporarily at the moment should be working fully by the weekend”.
‘Did you speak to Tess” Ben said sitting up.
“No just to Amber but I did say that you’d get to call this weekend” Dad smiled walking out.
Ben pulled the pictures out of his breast pocket and set them on his bunk I take it this must be your girlfriend” Brad said picking up the pictures.
“Yeah” Ben smiled pulling off his helmet and body armor.
“She’s hot” Brad smirked.
“I know” Ben laughed.
‘Wow I take it from this one you’ve proposed to her”.
‘Yep hopefully we’ll be getting married just after we get back”.
“So what’s her name and how’d you guy's meet, and how do I get one like her”. Brad asked.
“I thought you were with a girl when we left” Ben said.
“She I don’t think will make it a month before she’s out chasing other guys” Brad shrugged “How do you know your girl will cope”.
“She was born and raised the Marine way she’ll cope” Toby laughed from his bunk.
“You know his girl friend” Brad said looking across to Toby as Dad walked back in.
“Oh yeah, I know her seen her naked a few times as well” Eric laughed.
“Who’ve you seen naked” Dad said.
“His girlfriend” One of the other guys said pulling a face.
“They have” Dad nodded “I’ve got a semi naked picture of her here” he patted his breast pocket “You want to see her”. Ben and Gabe were both laughing; dad pulled out his pictures and handed the one of me on his back as a baby over to Brad.
“This is a Baby on your back” He said looking at the picture.
“Tess is his daughter” Ben said wiping away tears of laughter “Your face was a picture”.
“So you’re dating the Bosses kid” Brad said shaking his head and handing Dad the picture back.
“Yep” Ben nodded “I’ve known her since we were little and things sort of moved on last year”.
“Wow that’s intense” the other guy sighed.
“It’s all good, these guys aren’t too bad but the worst had to be the instructor at boot camp” Ben said.
‘Which one, they were all tough bastards” Jerry smiled from across on his bunk.
“The one that made us standing in the pouring rain because he was having a bad day and hadn’t had his coffee was the worst” Brad groaned “He was mean”.
“Yep that’s the one” Gabe grinned.
“Well he’s Tess’s god father” Ben laughed.
“Oh that sucks” Jerry sighed.
“You guys would actually like him away from the island” Ben nodded “that is an act”.
“Yeah but Adam is still one hell of a sniper” Dad pointed out…………………………..
…………………… the next couple of days went so fast for some reason finally it was the weekend and I got to sleep in my phone rang waking me up I groggily opened my eyes and looked at the number which was unknown.
Me * Hmmmm.
Ben * wow still in bed at 9 on a Saturday morning.
I sat bolt upright.
Me * please tell me this is really you and not a dream.
Ben * it’s me baby, this isn’t going to be a long call cause so many guys want to use the phones for their first call, I just needed to hear your voice.
Me * oh I miss you so much.
Ben * miss you too. Give me some happy news
Me * I’ve been working hard and just after Christmas I’ll have done a year of school, and I just got a pay raise at the school taking over the practices in the off season.
Ben * awesome so you’ll be living wild then with the extra money.
Me * nope I was wondering if you’d decided to wear a wedding band
Ben * I’ll wear one definatly, why’d you ask.
Me * because I’m playing on getting one for you if you’ll wear it and it’ll be the start to the wedding stuff.
Ben * we need to find a place to do it.
Me * you have to think of some places because it looks like it’ll be a winter wedding if you’re gone a year.
Ben * I’ll have a think and talk to the others see if they have any ideas, I love you and miss you so much.
Me * I love you too Ben I’ll send some pictures some as well okay.
Ben * some from last summer would be good from the beach.
Me * I’ll find them and send them put
Ben * thank you, I need to go, I’ll hopefully get to talk to you next week.
Me * Okay I miss you stay safe.
Ben * I’ll try love you Tess.
I hung up and flopped back on the pillow before taking a deep breath and walking down the stairs mom was in the kitchen laughing as Ollie was trying to tell her about his date the night before that didn’t turn out quite as he’d hoped.
“Good mornig Tess” Mom smiled.
“I just spoke to Ben” I said unable to wipe the grin from my face.
‘Is he okay” Ollie asked taking a piece of bacon from the plate next to the stove.
“He’s good” I nodded “you want to go with me to grab some wedding magazines” I asked looking at Ollie.
“Hell no that’s to girly” Ollie laughed as my phone started to ring again.
Me * hello.
Skye * I know you hate me but…
Skye burst in to tears.
Me * Skye whats happened”
Skye* I got a visit.
I felt the blood in my veins run cold.
Me * where are you.
Skye * I’m at the soccer field… I didn’t know
Me * I’m coming down.
I hung up the phone.
“You’re going to meet Skye” Ollie asked with raised eye brows.
“Shes on the soccer field “ I said running up the stairsI grabbed jeans and a hoodie and got dressed and raced back down stairs.
“And again why are you going to meet Skye” Ollie asked following me to the door.
“She said she got a visit and I’m not thinking it’s the tooth fairy” I went and got in my truck and drove to school the wind was howling across the field I spotted Skye on the bleachers. She looked up as I walked over to her the wind had actually frozen tears on her cheeks.
“I want to die” she sniffed bursting into tears………………………..
