The Not So Secret Admirers:
Chapter 1:
Dear One I secretly Love,
It has occurred to me that I’m falling more and more in love with you. Your beautiful smile, your luscious lips, and your tantalizing blue eyes are all I dream about. I’ll always love you, now until forever.
Love always,
Your secret admirer
“ Oh god! Not another one,” I shouted. “Oh Kat. You’re so not any fun! I think it’s sweet,” my BFF Sareena replied. “ It’s so annoying! When will he stop? He knows I know it’s him.” “ Well yes, but you’re not answering to him. It’ll stop when you do that,” Sareena said confidently.
But I knew it wouldn’t. You see there’s this boy named Jake Jones and he’s totally, completely in love with me! He’s 5 foot 2 inches. Not a normal height for most people our age, but look who’s talking. He has brunette hair, a lean body, and a super sweet smile. But what I loved most about him was his eyes. He had stunning brown eyes; like any other brown eyes but something more was there. But it’s still quite annoying because he decided, to get my attention, that he would write me love letters. It was sweet at first, until the 100th letter; and I'm not exaggerating. This has been going on for two months and I’m sick of it!
“ Well this one makes 101,” I groaned as I tossed it in the trash. “ I honestly don’t know how he could find so many words to say about me!” You see my name is Kathy Macy Mitch, the worst name on the planet, and I’m a 5 foot 2 inch tall brunette; you see what I’m saying with the look who’s talking. My hair isn’t colored, nor shiny like any model on T.V. My eyes are barely blue; I’d say a hazel blue mix. My lips are always chapped and, when they’re not, have no special lusciousness to them. My teeth are extremely crooked and currently have braces on them; that won’t be fixed any time soon. What else……….Oh yeah! I have no boobs and no butt. That pretty much sums it up.
“ How could you say that? I could think of a million great things to say about you,” Zareena chimed in. “Thanks,” I replied sarcastically. If there’s one thing I hate more then anything is when people say you’re beautiful when you’re not. I know I’m ugly and I say I am; and I don’t say it to get attention. The school bell rang at that moment. “ See ya at lunch Reena,” and off we went to our first period class.
I currently attend Centona Highschool, a little school in the middle of California. I’m a Senior and I’m still waiting to have my first boyfriend, and more importantly, my first kiss. My friends think I’m stupid for turning down so many “eligible” bachelors, but I’m waiting for the right guy to come along. And, no Jake that’s not you! Anyway, our school has no gangs, no drug use and abuse, and has never had a vicious break in; what would anyone steal if they broke in anyways. So, that’s my school. Seems like every parent’s dream High school, which it is, but there’s never any excitement. Except for me anyways; that is, if you call an annoying admirer exciting.
The first few periods of the day rolled on until lunch finally arrived. As I was leaving my third period class, was I not surprised to see Jake waiting by the doorway. “ Hey Jake,” I greeted, not wanting to be rude. Pure shock and joy danced across his face and he, to energetically, replied, “Hey Kathy! Get any interesting mail this morning?” Ugh! Even the conversation was the same everyday. This had better end soon, or I might have to strangle him. He interrupted my violent thoughts with,” Hey can I talk to you privately today? Just for a few minutes, mind you.”Hmmm that’s new, so I eventually replied with a simple, “Sure.” “ Great! Follow me.” And that’s what I did. I followed him, for what seemed a lifetime, to the school’s garden.
We were the only school in the city to have a garden, which made me hate it a little less. There was a white gazebo and flowers covering the ground; every flower you could name. The only part of the ground not covered in flora was the white brick path leading to the gazebo. As we approached the scene, I spotted a picnic blanket and basket laid out on the gazebo floor. “ This way my lady.” It was so amazingly wonderful; I was speechless!
“ Jake you did all this? It’s beautiful; like a scene from a movie.” “ Glad you like it,” he said, a smile in his voice. He seemed to enjoy my reaction very much. He led me up the steps, his hand guiding mine. This had to be a dream! Jake Jones was actually being romantic instead of annoying. He woke me from my awed daze when he started, what seemed like, a prepared speech. “ Kathy. I know you don’t like me much, and you think my letters are annoying. But I’d be extremely overjoyed if you’d accompany me to prom this year.” Wait, what! He’s asking me to prom? Is prom even here? Oh my god it is! I just sat there astonished, speechless. “Kathy, do you hate me that much?
“ No! No, not at all! You just surprised me, that’s all. Yes! Yes I’d love to go to prom with you.” I got a little overexcited, but I could tell he enjoyed that. “ Really? Wow, then it’s a date,” he replied sounding stunned himself. I couldn’t believe what just happened. Just this morning I was saying how annoying Jake was, and now I’m going to prom with him! Wait until Sareena hears this.
Chapter 2:
Jake was all I could think about now, and that’s kind of weird. I knew I was a Senior in Highschool and we were graduating soon. It was way to late to start a relationship. But, that didn’t matter did it? Just because we were going to prom didn’t mean we had to start a relationship. Right?
Oh well I thought, as I was practically flying to my next period; the only period I had with Sareena. Good I don’t think I could’ve held this in much longer. The second I saw her I started acting normal. Of course, she saw right through that. “ And where were you this lunch,” she asked in a menacing way. I couldn’t contain myself and so I spilled. “Okay I can’t hold this in any longer!” I gave her a word for word, moment-by-moment story.
After I finished, she looked as shocked as I had. And then I saw it, the bubbling excitement growing inside her. And then she blew like a volcano. “ Oh my God! Aaaaaaaaah,” she screamed excitedly. I quickly joined in her screaming charade until we realized we were at school. Every pair of eyes around us were glued to the scene we were creating.
The last period of the day quickly ended, and I skipped to my locker. There were two reasons for my joy. One, of course, was the fact I was going to prom with Jake. Second was for once in 2 months I would see my locker front empty of “secret” admirer notes. So, to my surprise and utter disappointment, as I approached my locker and saw a letter I just froze in place. “ What now!” The letter read:
Dear One I Secretly Love and Won’t Lose,
I have been admiring you from afar. But, since it worked for Jake, it’s my turn. I love you as well, and I’m not losing you without a fight! You’ll figure out who I am eventually. So, until then know that I’ll be secretly fighting to win your heart over.
Love always,
Your other secret admirer
Chapter 3:
“ This can’t be happening,” I screamed. How could this happen to me? There are plenty of girls in the school with ten times my beauty and charm. I had to find out who this was or else the prom event with Jake will be a problem. “ Jake,” I gasped. This would kill him if he found out. But I had to secretly hint it to him so I’ll know if he knows who this other admirer is. This could only happen to me!
I trudged off, all sense of joy gone. “ Why so glum my beautiful prom date?” I was jolted out of my angry daze by the sudden voice. I looked up to see Jake’s smiling face looking at me. “ Oh shit! I mean shoot! Jake, I didn’t mean to run into you…” His face fell down completely to the bottoms of hell. “ Oh. I’m sorry. I’ll just go then.” “ No! Jake, wait. That’s not what I meant. Not at all.” His face lightened up a bit. “ Well, then you better tell me what you did mean,” he said a little to harshly. Shoot, now I had to tell him or he’d hate me. “ Alright, fine. I just didn’t want to spill this information to you.”
I silently raised my hand to him, the hand that held the letter. He took it, cautiously, from me. There was a silent moment as he read the letter. Different emotions flickered across his face, but the one that stayed was anger. “ He thinks he can steal you away, does he? I’ll prove him wrong!” He ripped the letter to shreds and threw it into the trashcan. Jake glanced back at me once and gave me a reassuring smile, and then ran off.
I didn’t know what emotion to feel. Whether to be hurt, surprised, panicking, or joyful. I know this sounds sluty, but it feels good to have two guys fighting over you. But I couldn’t worry about that now. I needed to find out who my other admirer was. I didn’t have a clue on how to do it, and I couldn’t tell Sareena about this. I’d have to ask helper number 2, my mother.
When I arrived home I went to look for my mom immediately. “ Mom?” “ I’m in the living room,” she yelled back in response. “ Hey mom I need your help with something.” “What sort of help?” Oh god! I know she’s been waiting forever for me to ask her for help about a boy related problem. I had to think of something fast because she’d hold this against me for the rest of my life. “ I need help with a school assignment. Well project actually.
“Oh. Alright, ask away,” she said disappointment filling her voice. I didn’t want to make her to upset so, since my problem was boys, I threw them into my “assignment”. “ Well you see, the project is about boys for the girls and girls for the boys. Each girl is assigned a mystery boy and we must figure out his identity before prom is here, and vice versa for the boys.” “ Oh goody that sounds like fun,” she replied excitedly. “ So what do you need help with?”“ You see I was assigned this boy and my only clue is this fake love letter. So, I need suggestions on how to figure out who the boy is.” I felt so proud of myself for coming up with such a great story. “ Well what I would do is look in your yearbook and find which boy looks like he would write this to you.” That’s It! “ Oh mom thank you so much! You’re brilliant!” Without another word I ran off to my room to start my search. I had more confidence, and I now knew I was going to figure this out!
A week passed and I still had no leads. I sat on my bed for hours looking over each person and considering who my new admirer was. “ At this rate I’ll never know who it is. I have no leads!” My “ assignment” was interrupted abruptly by my phone’s ringing. I ran for the phone, not bothering to look at the caller I.D., and answered it.
“Hello,” I asked the phone line. “ Hey it’s Sareena! I’ve got wonderful news! I’ve got a date for the prom to! You know that guy I’ve had a crush on forever? He asked me to prom today! He….” She gave me the full story with all the details. I half listened, still analyzing my yearbook.
“ Hello? Anyone there?” Sareena must have finished her story and was waiting for my response. “ Gosh was my story that boring?” “ No! No, not at all! I’m extremely excited for you. I guess I’m just a little sidetracked.” “A little,” she said sarcastically. “ Yeah, a lot. Just a new thing has come up and it’s got me distracted. But, I really am glad you got asked to the prom.” I decided the day I received my secret admirer note that I wouldn’t tell Sareena. She didn’t need to worry with me. “ Hey Reena, I’ve really got to go. Call ya later?” “ Sure. Bye love ya Kat. You take care of yourself,” she said with concern filling her voice. That’s what I loved about Sareena. She’d support me and be concerned without prying and asking what it was I was concerned about.
“ Love ya to Reena,” I said more enthusiastically so she wouldn’t worry too much. I hung up the phone and threw it beside me on the bed. “ Now, back to work! I’ve got to figure this out before prom.” I decided I needed to attack this in a different way. So, the next day at school I would analyze everybody more closely. I’ll watch to see how certain boys react around me, and maybe I’d get more clues.
Chapter 5:
“ God! I’m so exhausted,” I stated. “ Why? What’s going on,” Sareena questioned. “ Nothing is wrong. Just can’t sleep, that’s all.” Sareena walked in front of me and stopped me in the middle of the hall. “ Kathy Macy Mitch. You better tell me what’s going on this minute!” I broke and spilled everything to her. I even showed her the letter. She was my BFF and I knew I couldn’t hide it from her forever.
“ Kat! That’s all? You should’ve just told me! Goodness. And here I thought someone was dying.” I was relieved that she wasn’t angry or worrying at least. But someone was dying; I was. “ Besides, I’m a better detective then you. I’ll help you figure this out.” Relief washed over me. “ Thank God! Some help at last. Oh, Reena. You’re the best!” I hugged her tightly and gave her one of my signature happy grins.
Just as I was finishing showering her with thanks and praise, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I spun around to see the most popular, hottest boy in our school looking at me. Richard Stud, better known as Rick, was 5 foot 6 inches of pure muscle. He was every girl’s dream guy. Rockin arms, 6 pack abs, beautifully shaped legs. Sandy blonde hair, perfect lips, and a breathtaking smile. Oh yeah, he had it all. Never mind the fact that he was captain of the football team.
But above all that rock hard body and awesome football position, was his gorgeous face. I swear his face was carved by angels! Not only that he had the most amazing, piercing blue eyes I’ve ever seen on a boy. So, after all this, why was he talking to me? Normal, not special me? “ Hey Rick. Need somebody’s homework to copy?” His only flaw, he’s as dumb as a doornail; and that’s insulting a doornail. “ No. I need to talk to you. It’s really important. But, not now. Look for me at lunch. Okay?” His deep, melodic voice pierced my ears. “ Okay,” I said in a dazed tone. He turned and walked away. That had to be the most amazing moment in my life!
I turned back to Sareena and she exploded. “ Oh my God! Richard Stud just talked to you! You’re the luckiest girl in the world. He is….” She went on but I didn’t hear her. What did Rick want to talk to me about at lunch that was so important. Something seemed suspicious here.
