Chapter 2
I woke up the next morning and laid in my bed. For some reason I felt that someone was with me all night long. I looked around my room and no one was there. I quickly got off my bed and looked at myself in the mirror. I had a black eye. I took off my clothes and looked at my body. It was all bruised. Every time I touched my body it hurt. I thought about skipping but my dad would find out, so I got up and grabbed a white tank top with a blue low cut shirt to go over it. I then grabbed a pair of my ripped jeans and my vans. I quickly put then on. I tried to fix my hair but my curls went everywhere. When I took a closer look at my face I noticed that I had a big red cut in my lip. I ignored it and then walked out of the room. I walked out of the room and opened up the door and there was Jack. He stood there and looked at my face.
“What?” I asked him.
“I was just wondering if you wanted a ride.” he said.
“Uhh, I don’t know.” I said.
“It’ll be ok,” he said, and then he reached out for my hand but I cringed back. “Sorry,” he said.
“It’s ok,” I said and then we walked down the stairs and outside. I walked to the side of his car and he opened up the door for me. I quickly sat down I winced when my back touched the seat but I quickly relaxed. He walked to the driver’s side and then got in. He started the car and then sped down the road.
“Where’s your family?” I asked him.
“They took a different car.”
“Oh,” I said.
“So, what happened last night?” he asked me.
“Nothing, it was nothing.” I whispered.
“It certainly wasn’t nothing,” he said.
“Well it was nothing.”
“Selene…” he started but I caught him off.
“I said it was nothing ok!” I yelled and looked at him. He looked shocked.
“I’m sorry,” he stuttered.
“Just leave it alone and don’t tell anyone.”
“I promise,” he said.
“Thank you,” I said and then he pulled into the school parking lot. I got out of his car, and then he did and followed me inside the school.
“See you in a few,” he said.
“Yeah, see you then.” I said and then I walked to my locker. I felt people stare at me as I passed them. I could tell they were looking at my bruises. But then a teacher passed me. I tried to ignore her but I could tell that it wasn’t working. She grabbed my arm and forced me to look at her.
“What happened?” he asked me.
“I fell down the stairs.” I said. “Woo,” I said and then I pulled my grib from her hand and walked to my locker. She didn’t follow. I quickly grabbed my books and walked to my first class. I sat in the back and people watched me as I did. But then Jack walked in and all the girls stared at him and smiled. He didn’t even look at him. He looked at me. Me! Out of all the pretty people in here he chooses me. Great. I thought sarcastically. He looked at me and smiled. I smiled back. He sat next to me and starred at my face.
“Your making me feel self conscious.” I said.
“That a good or bad thing?”
“Bad,” I said and then the teacher started. This time he was quiet. I could still tell that he was watching me. When the bell rang I grabbed my stuff and walked out. I walked to my locker and I could tell someone was behind me. I turned around slowly and Jack was behind me.
“What?” I asked him.
“I was going to walk you to your next class.” he said.
“Well, what don’t you walk all those other girls that would die to have you walk them to your next class.” I said.
“I thought that this morning when I took you here that you would be past that.” he said.
“Well you thought wrong because nothing changed.” I said and walked to my class. He didn’t follow. I got in the classroom and tried to walk back but the teaacher grabbed my arm and forced me to look at him.
“What?” I asked annoyed.
“What happened?” he asked. I looked at the class behind me and they were all starring at me.
“I fell down the stairs last night, sue me.” I said.
“Did someone do this to you?”
“Didn’t I just tell you that I fell down the stairs? Oh wait! I did!” I said. He was really starting to annoy me. “Any more questions that I already answered?” I asked annoyed.
“No,” he said and let go of my arm. I felt everyone stare at me as I took my seat. But then Jack walked in and all the girls smiled at him. I heard some of the guys snicker. But he sat next to me and the teacher started.
I tried to ignore him but I couldn’t help but stare at him. He didn’t even bother try to ignore me. I glared at him and he smiled.
“Are you trying to annoy me?” I asked him.
“Well, is it working?”
“Yes,” I said and looked at him. He was smiling at me. I glared again. But the bell rang.
“Are you going to sit by me today?” he asked.
“I don’t know it depends, are you going to be an annoying jerk?”
“I promise I won’t.” he said.
“Ok,” I said and then I walked to my locker and out my stuff in it. Then he tried to take my hand again but I moved back again.
“Sorry,” he said. I didn’t say anything back. We walked into the cafeteria and I smelt the food. It was my favorite. I saw Jack pick some up. My mouth watered.
“You want some?” Jack asked me.
“Uhh, yeah.” I said and he grabbed some more. We took our seats and he handed me my food. I slowly ate it so it wouldn’t upset my stomach. But then his sister and brother came up and sat down. Rose sat by me.
“So, Selene. Since it’s almost the weekend would you like to go shopping with me?” she asked.
“I can’t.” I said and then took another bite of my food.
“Why?”
“I’m busy this weekend.”
“You can take off one weekend,” she begged. “Please!” she pouted.
“Sorry I can’t.” I said. She pouted. “We can do it some other time. I promise.” I said.
“Thanks,” she said.
“Mhmm,” I said and then finished off my food. My stomach hurt because this is the most I ate in a long time. I squeezed my eyes shut. My stomach was killing me. I leaned over and put my head on the table.
“Selene what’s wrong?” Rose asked.
“I just need to go to the bathroom.” I said and then I got up. Rose followed me. I quickly walked into the bathroom and walked straight into the stall and puked. I felt Rose hold my hair back as I did. When I finished she handed me a few breathe mints. I put them in my mouth.
“Are you ok?” she asked me.
“Just a little sick I guess.” I whispered. She looked down at my stomach and my ribs were poking out. She lifted up my shirt and saw my ribs and my bruises. “What happened?”
“Nothing,” I said and stood up and pulled down my shirt.
“Something happened.”
“Why doesn’t anyone believe me when I say it’s nothing?” I yelled and walked out of the bathroom. I ran into Jack and when I did I cringed back into the wall.
“Selene, what’s the matter?” he asked. He reached out for me but I to shrink back into the wall. Rose walked out of the bathroom. And she looked at me, squished into the wall.
“What’s the matter?” she asked.
“Ugh! Why can’t you people leave me alone?” I said and then slid down the wall away from them. I finally got to the office.
“Excuse me; I just got sick can I go home?”
“Uhh, yeah. Your name?”
“Selene Ottens.” I said.
“Ok, you can go. Hope you feel better.” she said to me. Then I quickly ran to my locker and grabbed my stuff. I didn’t see Jack or Rose anywhere so I quickly walked outside. I then ran the whole way home. When I got there no one was there. Thank God. I quickly walked into the bathroom and puked again. That is the last time I ever eat so much food again. I sighed and then brushed my teeth. But when I walked out I saw Guy.
“Oh shit,” I muttered. He stared at me and I looked down at the ground.
“I didn’t know you were home so early,” he said. I could just smell the achol off of him. It made me cough. I quickly ran into my room and locked the door. No way in hell was I going to be in pain tonight! I yelled to myself. I didn’t hear him. But I didn’t go out to see if he was passed out.
I walked over to my window and opened it and climed out. I sat on the fire escape ladder and looked threw the town. All lights were on. Everything seemed in peace. Like nothing was wrong.
But then I heard someone coming up the fire escape. I looked down and Jack was coming up.
“Go away!” I said.
“I’m not leaving you here!” he said.
“You are! Now just leave me alone ok! I think that was explained enough today. Don’t ya think?” I said and got off of the fire escape and walked into my room I tried to close my window but he was there holding it up.
“Selene please!” he begged.
“No!” then I heard a banging on my door.
“Selene!” Guy screamed and kept banging on it.
“Come with me!” Jack begged.
“No just leave!” I said and forced my window down, and locked it. It was just in time to because Guy got in and there was fury in his eyes. I cringed into the wall. I sat down and lowered my head waiting for the beatings. And boy did he beat me. He kicked my so many times in the stomach I thought that I would die. And then he punched and whipped me and then he left my room. I heard the front door slam and with that he was gone. I tried to move but my body hurt too much.
I made my body move. It hurt but I finally stood up. I walked to my closet and grabbed a wrap. I slowly took ok my shirt trying to not to cause too much pain. It didn’t work. I slowly wrapped the bandage around my waist up. And then I put my shirt back on. I sat there on the ground and started to cry. I didn’t know what I was suppose to think. But after a while I thought about Jack. Why? I don’t know. I just did. Why hadn’t I gone with him? Was it because I was scared of getting close to him? That couldn’t be it, could it? I don’t know. I was just so confused. I didn’t know what to do. But do I really have feelings for him? Ugh! This is so confusing. I said to myself. I then crawled to my window and unlocked it and opened it. I half expected Jack to be there but he wasn’t. I kept my window open and then walked to my bed and fell asleep.
