"All right, class," said Teacher William, rapping on his desk with a knuckle. Everyone fell silent and watched him intently. Teacher William overlooked his students, of which only sixteen seemed to be attentive. He folded his arms over his chest and gazed at 120980, who sat staring out of the window.
I leaned forward in my seat and tapped 120980 on the shoulder, and was met with a glare. I sheepishly pointed towards Teacher William, who resumed with the lesson once all eyes were on him.
"You can not afford to not pay attention in this class," Teacher William declared. "All of you will be turning sixteen soon. My class is only taught over a span of three days-and excuses you from all other school work. Therefore, you should devote all of your brain power to learning these things so that you may make your choice without regret. Understand?"
All seventeen of us replied in unison: "Yes, Teacher William."
He nodded approvingly. "Now, you took notes on the anatomy and bodily functions of men yesterday. Today, we will go over women. Tomorrow, I will answer any questions you may have regarding either sex, and hopefully you will be able to choose which gender you want to be. It's a very exciting time for all of you, I'm sure."
Teacher William continued on with the lesson on his slide viewer. I wrote down the notes absent-mindedly. To be honest, I've never really thought about what I wanted to be. My sixteenth birthday was in three days, but I am nowhere near deciding what my gender should be. Everyone nowadays is simpy born with a urethra and anus, but no sexual organs. That you get to choose, along with your name. I couldn't comprehend having to forget my number-101765-or my nickname, Thinker.
I heard a disgusted groan from several of my classmates when Teacher William began to discuss something called a menstrual cycle. I quickly scanned over my notes for why it was groan-worthy and discovered that women bleed from their uterus once a month for as long as they are not pregnant. Ew.
Becoming a woman seemed unappealing.
Then I returned to my thoughts and continued to write down the notes as they appeared on the screen at the front of the class.
Maybe I should ask Snoopy how he decided on what gender to be. There was no point in asking Grandma Daisy-she couldn't remember four days ago. Mom and Dad had passed away years ago, leaving me with my brother (who had just chosen days before the accident). Snoopy immediately realized that he was in over his head taking care of me and providing for me, so he enrolled me into Proffessor's Academy at the age of nine, with the promise to call me every day. And, for the seven years so far, he has kept that promise.
I twirled a lock of my short brown hair around my fingers and ran my tongue back and forth over my straight teeth. My braces had only come out a few months ago. I couldn't stop myself from smiling suddenly at the memory of Snoopy when he saw that my braces were gone. The way he had reacted made me feel as though I had won an award.
"101765," Teacher William snapped.
I jumped, startled. "Yes?" I said quickly.
"Would you like to explain to the rest of the class why labor pains are something to smile about?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at me.
I blushed crimson, feeling the tips of my ears grow hot. I slowly rose from my seat, knowing all of my classmates were watching me intently. "Teacher William," I started with a heavy sigh, "I apologize for not paying close attention to your important lesson. I was actually thinking about my older brother…"
"Your older brother," he repeated. "Were you thinking of asking him how he came to his decision?"
I looked up in surprise. "Y-yes, actually," I stuttered.
"That is understandable," Teacher William said. "However, please try your best to focus on theis at the moment, 101765."
"Yes, Teacher William," I replied obediently, grateful for being let off easily. I sat back down, and this time refused to let my mind wander.
