~ Vega Family Ball (Part I)
His words echoed inside my mind as I numbly stumbled inside my room.
What happened to you Kirsten?
It was like he cut off a chain that held a box that had all my past in it. He cut off a chain that allowed some of the memories to seep through. Making me remember the… the old me. The ‘me’ that I kept firmly locked inside the depths of my mind. The ‘me’ that I hated with my entire whole.
I stripped off my clothes and slipped inside the bathtub to which I filled with warm water. Half of my body sank into the water. It didn’t help me relax like it was supposed to. Instead, the steam of the water drifting around the bathroom brought back memories about my past.
“Kirst! You coming or what?”
Her words echoed in my mind. I missed her. Oh so much... I kept my eyes shut and leaned against the tub, letting the memory flow.
A giggle came from my mouth and I quickly jogged towards Camille.
“Have you seen Mason?” She asked. Camille had this huuuge crush on Mase. But I never told him.
“Nope.” I nudged her slightly and gave her a soft smile. “Don’t worry about it. I’m sure Mase is goofing around with the guys.”
I pulled at her arm and we ran towards the little cottage we found in the estate of SSU; off to meet our 4 more best friends, Mason, Hayden, Mark and Tessa.
A sigh escaped from my mouth. I… I missed the old days. I never thought that I would. I submerged my whole built under the water, held my breath for 8 seconds before coming up for air. I stayed like that for a minute or two before sighing again and brought my knees up to my chest. I closed my eyes and just let the memory come.
My fists banged against the door as I knocked it furiously.
“Camille! Camille! Answer the door!” I shouted. “Camille, I’m coming in!”
I vaguely heard sobs from the inside and when it got louder and more heart-wrenching, I slammed my body against the door—seeing as it worked in the movies, I did it. Little did I know, it hurt like hell and the door didn’t budge.
“Oooow!!!” I moaned, clutching my side protectively. Half chuckles and half sobs filled the other side and the door opened slightly. I bit my lip before slipping inside and dropping to my knees in front of the scene in front of me. Camille slid down the door and looked at me while tears streamed down her face.
“Y-you… Y-you id-idiot.” She sobbed and sniffled. “Y-you know th-that the bo-body s-slamming thing’s n-never…” She shook her head and wiped her cheeks. “G-going to work…”
I shook my head and wrapped my arms around her before letting her sob and cry. I stroked her hair silently and rubbed her back while she stained my shirt with the tears that she’s letting out.
“Ssh… It’s okay… Let it all out… All out…” I murmured.
I opened my eyes slowly and stared at the dull white walls. The water was already cold and judging by my prune-looking fingers and toes, I stayed far too long in the tub. I stood up, water still dripping down my naked body before wrapping a single white fluffy towel around me and stepped out the bathroom.

I pushed aside everything that went down that afternoon before I got dressed and got everything ready for the ball. My mind went from total-reminiscing to total-bitchy. Since I’m going to a ball where everyone would be expected to wear something floor-length and with only 2 or three inch heels, I chose a dress that would definitely raise some eyebrows. It was navy blue and satin. It reached below the knees but didn’t even reach 7 or 6 inches above the ankle. It’s also strapless and it definitely showed off my curves. I slipped on my heels before getting every bit of make-up done and putting only two pieces of jewelry with one white purse.
My hair was done in a very nice gathered low on the left side of my head and my hair was stuck with diamond studded bobby pins to make it look like I wore a beautiful crown on my head. After touching up little things here and there, I pushed my phone and my iPod inside my purse and stepped out of the room and walked towards the awaiting black limo outside the building.

I was bored out of my mind and I just got to the party 10 minutes ago. Most of the boys at SSU tried to get me to dance or whatever they do on that big space where they sway side by side. It was kind of annoying at how they seemed so desperate to dance with me. It’s not like I’m the only hot girl here. Oh, wait. I am.
I walked over to the refreshments table and got something to drink whilst I snickered under my breath at the floor length dresses that the girls wore. They were eyeing my dress—and most probably me—with envy. It felt like all eyes were on me when I walked up to one familiar girl across the room. She wore a beautiful rose printed halter dress that looks chiffon. She didn’t wear any heels but wore a pair of flats. Her blonde hair was tied in a bun with a rose pinned to it. I must admit it, my cousin really looked beautiful.
“Iliana.” I called out. She slowly looked over her shoulder and I smirked as her eyes fumed.
She scanned my outfit with envy but distaste was clear in her eyes. She excused herself with the girls she was talking to which are—surprise, surprise—Tiffany who wore a light blue dress with an open back and heels and another girl who looked… very familiar. She has brown hair and a pound or two over slim. She wore a blush colored gown and heels. I couldn’t really see her face because her back was turned to me.
“What on earth are you wearing?” She hissed in my ear while she stirred me towards a little alcove. I did a mini shrug and smirked.
“This is what you get for inviting me here.”
Her eyes fumed and I saw her hand twitch. She took a deep breath and smoothed out her dress. I rolled my eyes dramatically and put a hand to my hip.
“Look. This party is freaking boring!” I threw my hands up and tucked my purse underneath my arm and crossed my arms over my chest. “Now, all I have to do is mingle and that bull and ditch right?”
Iliana looked over her shoulder, tapped her foot for a minute before taking a deep breath and faced me. She leaned over and tapped my cheek.
“Right. So all you need to do is wait for the program the school’s going to perform,” She saw the exasperated look on my face and quickly added, “It’s only for 20 minutes or something. And you have to go to the Vega family members, thank them for inviting you and tell them how you’re so honored that they invited you and mingle. Please. Mingle and…” She looked around and whispered. “Don’t be a bitch.”
I choked on my laughter as I watched her walk away. As if I have control over my bitchiness. It just explodes whenever it feels like it. I put my weight on one foot and scanned the crowd. There were a few hot boys here and there but there were few competitions. One particular guy though, stood out from the crowd, it wasn’t because he was the only one wearing a completely white tux, it was because of those luscious lips that I wanted to try. He met my eyes and a known glint in his eyes told me that he knew exactly what I was thinking about.
After a few more minutes of utter boredom, I sighed inwardly and straightened my poise before walking right up to the eye-candy. He met my eyes and we shared a knowing look before he disappeared behind a wooden door.
Perfect… I thought.
I slipped inside but not before locking the door and found him there, where his back was to me. I didn’t waste any time of course; I placed my purse down the table and started pulling out the bobby pins out of my hair and tucking it inside my purse.

My phone vibrated and slowly slipped out my purse and fell to the floor. A groan escaped from my lips and I pushed the eye-candy away from me. He chuckled and leaned back against the leather couch and allowed me to get off his lap. My lips formed into a pout as I bent down and looked at the incoming call.
***STUCK UP COUSIN***
Another groan escaped my lips but this time I walked back to Mr. Eye Candy and straddled his lap and kissed him on the lips before placing a finger on his mouth and answering the phone.
“Where are you?” I raised a brow at her very cold tone.
“Excuse me?” I snapped. “I. Am. Having. Some. Fun.”
“Look, Kirsten, I get it that you’re a freaking witch back home.” I can imagine her taking deep breath and smoothing out her clothes. “But this isn’t home. This is SSU. We have rules and I have a reputation to maintain.”
My eyes narrowed and I straightened my back. My finger dropped from Mr. Eye Candy’s lips and I crossed one arm over my chest.
“Yeah, whatever. I know.” I stood and walked over to where my heels are and slipped my foot in one heel. “I’m on my way back. I’ll wait for the freaking program, mingle and then I do what I want.” I balanced my phone between my ear and shoulder and bent down to fix my heels.
“Yes! That’s all you have to do!” I heard someone calling her name. “BUT, Aunt Marie called me and asked me to tell you—actually, to order you to meet Kyle Sinners. He’s going to be performing tonight along with the others. You’ll have to meet him on the second floor where the group is staying after the program. No excuses Kirsten.”
My face scrunched up as I flashed back to the flowers and chocolates that came from Kyle. I transferred my phone to my other shoulder and replied, “Fine. But I’ll only do it on one condition.”
“What?” Her voice confirmed that she was seriously pissed. I didn’t hesitate to ask her for what I wanted, I just said it.
“Get me a flight back home tomorrow or tonight. I don’t want to stay here for another two days. Get me a flight Iliana. If you don’t, I’ll go do it myself right this very moment.”
“Done.” Then she hung up.
I made a sound that was half-snort half-scoff. I brushed my hair and faced the mirror. My lip gloss was smeared, my lips were puffy and my hair was a disheveled mess. I reapplied my lip gloss, let my hair fall around me naturally and turned to where Mr. Eye Candy sat. He was staring at me intently and I could see the confusion in his eyes. I picked up my dress and easily put it on. I zipped up the zipper at the side and cocked my head.
“You haven’t told me your name.” I stated. Instead of answering my question-statement, he fired me back a question.
“Iliana Pierce? You two know each other?” I raised a brow. “And about your question, my name’s Dante Vega.”
My mouth nearly dropped as I registered in my mind that he is in fact one of the Vega I have to mingle with. I guess I overdid it with the mingling part. We did a lot more than just mingle. There was a sudden knock on the door and a sharp, “Kirsten, I know you’re in there.”
I looked back at ‘Dante Vega’ and smiled brightly before saying, “My name’s Kirsten Pierce.” I picked up my purse opened the door and almost ran smack against Iliana. She was tapping her foot on the ground with her hands on her hips. She tried to look over my shoulder to see who was in the room with me. And I guess she got a glimpse because before I could open my mouth, her mouth dropped and her cheeks brightened like a tomato.
“You were in there with none other than Dante Vega!!!” She didn’t say it as a question but as a statement. Her hands clenched and unclenched. She raised a hand and pressed the heel of it against her forehead. “You banged him in there!”
All I could do was a mini shrug before turning around. My heart dropped to the ground. I didn’t realize we had an audience. Tiffany smirked evilly and wrapped an arm around Tom’s waist. I mustered up all my acting skills and tried to put a wall in front me. A smirk appeared on my face a few seconds later and I curled my hand around my purse. Mason looked really broken. He looked at me in a new way.
“Hmm… Let me guess, was he hot?” Tiffany said. I rolled my eyes and brushed the hair out of my face.
“Tiffany, Tiffany, Tiffany…. You never change do you? You’re still trying to find out my business.” I did a perfect hair flip and put a hand to my hip. “But, I’ll give one little detail. He is in fact—”
“Kirsten!” Speak of the devil. A bright smile popped into my face—but really, it was more of a sneer. I looked back to see Dante running towards me with my necklace in hand. Ooops, must have forgotten it.
“Oh, hey Dante.” I said casually. He grinned at me and pointed at the side of my neck where I knew a hickey was placed. I smiled at him and held out my hand. He shook his head and moved behind me and clasped my necklace in place. “Thanks.”
He winked at me but no butterflies erupted in my stomach, it was just plain. No exciting thing happened. His hand slid down my arm and he secretly slipped a piece of paper in my hand. And with that, he leaned down to kiss my cheek.
“Ahem.”
I glared at Iliana for being such a party pooper. Dante snapped back up and forced a smile towards Iliana.
“Uh, um… Ms. Yana… I… I didn’t realize you’re here.” His voice quivered and I restrained myself for raising a brow.
“Well, I am Mr. Vega. Now run along now. My cousin needs to meet some people.”
I watched in amazement as he scrambled away like a little mouse. A bubble of laughter flitted out of me as I tucked his number in my purse and faced Iliana. And once again, she glared at me and her eyes fumed.
“Look. I don’t care what you say. You’re not my mother.” I stated calmly and started to walk away when she grabbed my wrist and pulled me back.
Her eyes looked into mine and I now knew why the students here feared her. Those eyes were soulless and cold. It was as if I was looking right into the devil’s eyes. I kept my face composed and a bored expression planted on it.
“Stop being a bitch and a slut for one second will you?” She hissed coldly at me. A shiver ran down my spine and I rolled my eyes to hide the building fear in me. “Some students want to meet you. And I really don’t know what they see in you!”
“Whatever.” Was the only thing I could say.
I allowed her to tow me towards the mini-lounge going on and I saw the girl Iliana was talking to earlier. The one who wore the blush colored gown.
“Smile.” Iliana instructed.
I plastered a very fake smile on my face but I knew my eyes would give way to my boredom and irritation. I prepared a little speech for this girl—it contains lots of insults. For one, who the hell does she think she is to want to meet me? Two, that dress does not compliment her AT ALL. Three, what the f does she eat that it made her look that fat? And of course—Shit.
All insults flushed out of my mind and my heart stopped beating. Memories pounded harder in my head and after years of NOT being tongue-tied, I got tongue-tied. I didn’t know what to say and my bitchy layer was slowly breaking. The wall I built in front of me slowly broke down and my eyes turned glassy as my breath hitched.
Her eyes went wide and the first words that came out of her mouth were NOT the words I was expecting. But of course, she didn’t KNOW I was a bitch. Well, I AM a bitch. Still, I thought that she would shun me the moment she saw me. But no. Her words struck me to where I was never struck. My heart.
“No. Freaking. Way.” Her hand flew to her mouth and stayed there for a few seconds before she dropped it again. “I missed you Kirst.”
My throat constricted and I felt Iliana slowly walk away. My mouth twitched and again, another thing that hasn’t happened in a long time, well, happened. A genuinely soft smile appeared on my face. My eyes turned glassy but I held it in.
“Hi… Camille.”
