Talking the Talk

Novel By: Mike Brennan
Young adult

This is a pure dialog piece (almost), written as an exercise. I think it is amusing. View table of contents...

At the mother-daughter Swenson household:

"I don't believe this! I refuse to believe this! How could you do this? How could you do this to yourself! How could you do this to ME!?!"

"I didn't mean for it to happen. It just did. Look, it isn't really that bad…"

"NOT THAT BAD! NOT THAT BAD!? Pregnant? Unmarried and Pregnant? Unmarried and Pregnant AT YOUR AGE? Not that BAD? What, exactly, would it take for it to be "that bad"?

"What are people going to think? What will the people at church say? What will the kids at school say? My God; I don't know how I will be able to face anyone. Pregnant. My God."

"Would you please calm down? This isn't helping."

"How could you let this happen? I mean, it isn't like you were stuck with some "Abstinence Only" sex ed program. If you weren't going to use the information, why did we even bother with "The Talk"? Why did I have to go through the most embarrassing hour of my life if you are going to act like this?"

"Hey, I didn't enjoy that any more than you did! But that's not the point. We need to talk about what to do now."

"What to do now? Well, I plan on dying from embarrassment, so I never have to see anyone I know ever again."

"Look, will you calm down? I feel bad enough without you going on. I am going to get enough grief from others without you getting all judgmental."

"Judgmental?! Oh My God: Have you told your father?"

"Um, no. I was kind of thinking we could get things straightened out before I called him."

"Oh, no. You are not putting this off, and have him find out from someone else. I refuse to be a party to THAT trauma. I want you to pick up the phone RIGHT NOW and call Grandpa. Right now!"

"Oh, okay."

"God, Mom. Pregnant. What were you thinking? You're almost forty!"

"Judy, please be quiet while I am talking to your Grandpa."

"I suppose it is too much to expect that you know who the father is."

"HEY! I certainly know who he is!"
