PLEASE read the summary. :)
Setting:An almost 2 year old Emily is playing in the living room, with Momma and Papaw. GG, her grandmother is in the kitchen cooking. It is 5:00 PM. Almost time for Daddy to walk in through the doors from work.
Papaw threw his head back in laughter at how I danced in Momma's arms. His face was tanned and harsh from the many days of work he'd spent at Scott's. [It's a tractor place. They deal with gravel and construction and.....oh just google it. XD] Uncle JJ sat close to him, roaring with laughter as well. His four leafed clover hathovered onthe couch arm, threatening to fall off from all of the motion. My tinyarms flailed up and down in time to their clapping. Small rosy cheeks were uplifted with a great big smile, followed by beautiful shining blue eyes. Papawsat in his soft navy blue chair and was singing an old folk song. Mama's face was bright with love and happiness as well. I really miss her smile. Back in those days when everything was fine and dandy, and we all didn't have a care in the world...Her warm, comforting arms held mine gently, helping me to move to the music.
I was surrounded by a loving, caring family. Something that not everyone was fortunate to have. Little did I know that this happiness would only last for a few years.
Everyone joined in a joyful chorus of "Delta Dawn."
Delta Dawn, what's that flower you have on
Could it be a faded rose from days gone by..?
And did I hear you say he was a-meetin' you here today
To take you to his mansion in the sky-eye
A loud thundering noise rang through the house, and I stopped bouncing around like a little rabbit for a split second. It wasn't an unpleasant sound, just disquieting. GG came in through the swing door carrying an iron pan of cornbread. Dark black curls were piled on top of her head, so they wouldn't bother her during supper preperation. Her smile was beautiful and radiant, kind and loving, and it warmed your heart to the core.
Papaw's singing lowered down in volume to a small hum, as he grinned a sly smile at Momma and JJ.
To an almost two yearold, you have to know this was very irritating. What did they all know that I didn't?
I guess, in truth I also really had no concept of the time either. I had been in my own little world for the past three hours, dancing away in Momma's loving arms, and all too willingly listening to JJ and Papaw singing.
The swing door spun open to reveal another figure. This one I hadn't seen since the night before, and I was so ecstatic to see his shining face again. He lifted the silver biker helmet off of his head and rested it in the crook of is elbow, shaking out his redhair. Daddy was home.
I ran to him, squealing, with arms wide open. With a look of surprise Daddy shouted, "Woah!" and started laughing, surprised at my attack. I stopped in puzzlement and stared at him up at him. JJ roared with laughter once again. "Wow, she's really attached to you."
Daddy leaned over and carressed my head, giving me a small hug. I missed you soo much, Why did you leave me?! I thought desperately. I love you!!
Momma was absolutely brimming with joy. Daddy walked over to her and helped her stand up. "Welcome home.." Momma smiled at him. They kissed and hugged for a moment positively happy to be in each other's presence.
Daddy then walked upstairs to put up his helmet up, leaving us alone in the living room. JJ twirled his hat effortlessly on his index finger.
To no one's surprise, this strangely intrigued me. So when I stumbled over to him reaching desperately for it, he sighed with a small chuckle. A devilish grin appeared on his face and he put it slightly out of my reach. Papaw scolded him playfully and Momma smacked him on the leg.
"Owwww! What was that for?!" I started to giggle.
"Jamie, don't do that. Give it to her!" Momma glared at him.
Finally giving up, JJ handed over my new toy regrettably. He sighed, faking anger. Papaw snickered quietly. "You know you're never gonna get that back."
JJ nodded sadly. "And that was my favorite hat too.."
