"Angela!" She screamed as her best friend fell off the pier and into the water. Little did most people know is that since she was a little girl, she has had an irrational fear of large bodies of water. She can't get into anything bigger than her bathtub. She was thrown into a like when she was seven by her drunken uncle, who had promised to teach her how to swim. She would have drowned if not for the couple that had been walking by at the time. He was sentenced to prison on attempt at murder.
Larissa had run to get someone to help because Angela had yet to resurface. Tonisha was scanning the water trying to see if her friend was any bit visible in the murky, pea-green lake water.
Larissa called out to her, "Nish. I found Andrew." They were still a ways away from the dock.
"Where is she?" Andrew called out as he ran faster.
Tonisha pointed to the other side of the pier, where Angela fell in. As Andrew moved closer to the water, he pulled his shirt off and threw it towards Tonisha. He got to the end of the pier and dove into the water.
Larissa had finally made it to Tonisha's side. They stood staring at the one spot in the water where Andrew went down. When they saw Andrew break through the surface of the water, they both finally let go of the breath they were surprised to find they were holding.
Andrew laid her on her back and was breathing the life back into her as Tyler came running up, with the adults in tow. As they all started to crowed around Andrew and Angela, Angela started to cough. She coughed and coughed and finally started spitting up the water she had inhaled.
"Angela, can you hear me?"
"Look at me Ang."
"Over here sweetie, look over here." Everyone was talking all at once, and Andrew couldn't concentrate.
"Everyone, Shut up! I'm the one that just rescued her, and just saved her life, but does anyone care, no! Let me have some room here." All the adults took a few steps back.
Angela's step-dad, Pete, had bent down to life her up when Andrew exclaimed, "No. Don't touch her. I'll do it." He stood up, got his baring back, then he bent down and lifted her up. He held her like a prince would hold his princess.
"Tonisha, I need my shirt." She brought it to him and laid it on Angela's stomach. She noticed Angela had fallen asleep with a very peaceful look on her face.
"Andrew," Tonisha whispered as he was walking away, "Thank you."
She didn't think he had heard her, but he paused, turned to look at her and said, "You would have done the same thing if you were in love with her, like I am." Then he turned back and started to walk towards the house, to lay Angela down to rest.
