CHAPTER 2
I heard my parents talking in my dad’s library, when I entered our house. I didn’t bother them. I climbed up the stairs to my private room. I had two rooms, by the way. One room for public, where anyone can enter, and the other for my personal use. I usually sleep in my other room. I only used my private room when I had to do some thinking.
Both of my rooms were big. I had a queen-sized in both of my rooms, full of stuff toys, a 57” plasma TV, and everything. My rooms were colorful. I curled my whole body on the bed, and closed my eyes. I sealed away all the confused emotions that I was having. I rested a bit, until I heard a knock on my door. It was Sarah, my personal maid. She opened the door and just stayed outside. I still couldn’t figure out why my mom gave me a maid.
“Annie…” she called out from where she was standing. “Brenda’s on the phone right now. The phone’s in the kitchen.”
“Thanks, Sarah.” I got up and went to the door. I went out and started for the stairs. I turned to talk to her again. “By the way, will you tell her to wait? I need to change first. And, if I take too long, she can hang up. I’ll call her back.”
I went to my other room, on the second floor of our house. I found my shopping bags right outside my door. I opened the door, and picked up the bags. I threw the bags in corner. I quickly dressed in my pajamas, grabbed my phone, and rushed downstairs. When I got in the kitchen, the phone was back in its place. I saw Sarah behind the counter and I smiled at her. I didn’t bother calling back Brenda. I knew she wouldn’t mind.
I quickly walked from the kitchen. When I passed the library, I could clearly hear voices, arguing. They were from my parents and Angelique. Curiosity built up inside me. I leaned on the wall carefully, trying to get what they were talking about.
“… I told you, mom. There’s something wrong with her.” Angelique’s voice said.
“What could possibly be the problem, dear?” Mom’s voice spoke. “What happened?”
“You see, she fell asleep during her exam. She told me that she had a dream.”
“Angelique, what could possibly be the problem of having a dream when you fall asleep?”
“Mom, don’t be stupid…” Angelique stopped. “Sorry.” It was silent for a second, and then Angelique continued. “The dream is not the point. The point is what her dream was, and the way she acted when she woke up from that dream. Mom, Dad, her dream was about what happened eight years ago, when we were at Grandma’s.”
I was confused now. What did she meant about that? I asked myself.
Mom became quiet. Dad was now talking. “This’ll be a problem. Angelique, did anything else strange happen?”
“Unfortunately, yes.” Angelique sounded like she hesitated. “I know this sound crazy but, she… she started to walk faster. I mean, she walks faster than a normal person would, and runs faster!”
It was quiet for a moment. Then my sister spoke. “Dad? I’m scared for her. What if… what if she really turns into a… a vampire?”
“No! nobody in this family is a vampire, and nobody will turn into one.” Dad’s voice was now furious. “I won’t let it happen. There’s got to be something we can do.”
I gasped loudly. The second he said those words, I burst into the library, giving them a surprise. I was more surprised from what I heard, than them.
“Dad, Mom, Angelique, what are you talking about? What do you mean by a vampire?” I told them straightforwardly.
“You were listening? I thought you won’t be back till seven?” my mom asked me.
“Club activities were… Wait! Don’t change the topic. Yes! I was listening, and I heard everything! Dad, care to explain?” my mind was in rage now, but I made myself looked calm.
“Dear, please don’t get mad at us for keeping it from you. We only wanted your safety.” My mom said. I sat on the couch, across from my parents. I didn’t reply. I waited for them to speak. My dad continued.
“Anastasia,” he only calls me that if it was serious talk. “All of this started when you were eight years old. We were at my mom’s, your grandmother, during the spring break. It was eight years ago. Somebody or something attacked you, it was a vampire. I know it sounds crazy to you, but vampires do exist. I heard you shout from the forest. When we found you, you were already bitten. You were in coma for about two weeks. We thought that you will turn into one of them, and you won’t survive. When you woke, you were perfectly fine, you were in a perfect state. Your grandma told us to be cautious. So, we decided to expose you at everything. Like, exposing you to sunlight, and everything. Ania...? are you alright? You look pale.”
I shook my head. I tried to smile but couldn’t. “Dad, I’m f…fine. I was just shocked, completely sh…shocked.” I stuttered as I told him. Hearing and learning the truth from him made me shiver. Suddenly, strange images and sounds, more like a flashback popped in my head. I then remember everything.
“Mom, what’s wrong with her?” Angelique asked. “She’s not moving.”
“I don’t know. Ania, talk to me!” I heard mom’s voice, it was as if she was shaking me. “Anastasia!”
I snapped back to reality. I felt my body again. “I think I need some rest. Dad, Mom, thanks for telling me the truth.” I told them. “Ania, you’re not mad at us?” Dad asked.
“No, Dad. I’m supposed to be angry for not telling me all those stuff, but somehow, I felt so relieved after hearing those things. I don’t know, but I think I just had a flashback.” I stood up and walked over to them. I hugged them both. “Thanks Dad, and Mom, of course. I really need to rest now. Good night Father, Mother.” I told them and walked out from the library. Angelique followed me before the door closed.
“Annie,” she called quietly for me. “I’m really sorry about keeping it from you.”
I was on the first step of the stairs to my private room. I turned around to face her. Her face and eyes were red, she was crying. I put my arms around her and said, “Angelique, it already happened and it will never change. Maybe, I was destined to be one. Whatever happens, you will always be my sister, and I love you, and you know that.” I smiled at her when she wiped her tears away.
“So, am I really a vampire?” I continued. She immediately replied, “I guess so. I don’t really know about vampires, but I think you still have the scar. Look, it looks like a mole.” She held a slight giggle.” And then I asked her, “What scar?” She pointed to something I couldn’t see, and said, “I don’t really know about vampires that much, I heard everything from our grandparents, especially Grandmother Sammie.”
After some small talk with her, I went up to my room and flushed myself on the bed. I still couldn’t believe what I had become. I didn’t want to believe it, but I did. I covered myself with a pillow and screamed at myself. I then realized that I was crying, crying because of everything.
What if I really turn into a vampire? Will I hurt anyone? I asked myself as I caressed the scar that the vampire imprinted on me, infront of the mirror. I heard vampires are dangerous. It means that I am a threat to my family. If I wanted them to be safe, I better stay away from them. That was the best idea I could imagine. Before I slept, I called my dad using the phone that was connected to my parents’ room. I then told him something.
“Are you sure? You are not going to change your mind, are you?” my dad asked me, over the phone.
“I’m not going to change my mind, Dad. Will you arrange everything for me? You also have to call grandmother. I still need her permission before I move in at her place.” I told him.
“Fine. I’ll discuss this matter with your mom now, and I think I will see you at school tomorrow. You need some rest, darling. Go to sleep now.”
“Thanks, Dad.” I hung up and then closed my eyes.
