I woke up from the dream, yet again. But this time, I didn’t forget anything. I let out a sigh and went to the window. I touched the glass, it was cold. The air was freezing than before, but it wasn’t snowing. I took a hot shower and got dressed. In this ordinary December day, everything won’t be the same. When I got in the kitchen, the food was already served.
“Sarah! How did you know?” I exclaimed at her.
“I just had the feeling that you might be early today.” Sarah told me lightly, and showing off her smile. “Your car is also ready.”
My eyes widened and I hugged her. I smiled and said, “Really? That is so cool, Sarah. Thank you.” She smiled and took a glass of milk from the fridge.
I had bacon and scrambled egg for breakfast. After I ate, I took my bag and headed outside. My car was there, and my driver already cleaned it. He was also waiting for me. My driver’s name was Spencer. He and Sarah were twins. They were only twenty years old, or so I think, when my dad took them in, four years ago.
“Hey Spencer, I’m bringing my car at school today. So, you don’t need to come.” I told him. I was now in my car. I smiled at Spencer, and then started the engine and took off to school.
It was still seven-thirty, school doesn’t start till nine. I parked my car in the sophomore’s parking lot. My car went solo. I started walking towards the gym. I changed into my gym clothes and went for a run. I wanted to sweat, since it was cold. I felt my body burn as I finished my thirty-fifth lap around the field. I went back and took a shower. It was now eight-thirty.
I went back to my car. I turned the engine on, as well as the heater. I stayed there and stared blankly at nothing. Minutes passed and I heard a knock on my car’s window. It was Brenda. I opened the door for her, and let her seat beside me.
“Thanks, Ania. It’s freezing out there. Anyway, I was surprised that you brought your car here. It really stands out. Look, everybody’s watching.” She told me.
I sighed, “I know, Brends. That’s why I don’t like bringing my car. You know me, twin, I don’t like attention. The last time I brought my car to school, I think it was the Diablo, everybody never left their eyes on either me or the car.”
She held a little laugh. “I know, I know. It was hilarious. Wait, you don’t like the attention, but you’re like the most well-known girl in this campus. You are popular, Ania. You just don’t listen to your surroundings. The boys’ eyes are set on you.”
“Really?” my voice toned up a little. “I didn’t know that. One thing I’m positive about is that, they are comparing me to that queen bee at school. I hate it. I hate being compared.”
“Oh. So you knew about it?” I nodded, and she continued. “Just don’t take it seriously. They were probably bored with their life and they don’t have anything to do. By the way, what’s up with you and Andrew?”
I turned off the heater and engine as soon as the bell rang. I didn’t say anything. Brenda got out of the car and waited for me. I took my bag from the back seat and got out of the car, and locked it. Brenda started walking towards our building. I followed her till I was right next to her.
“What were you saying earlier?” I asked her. She looked at me and said, “Hmmm… I was talking about Andrew. What’s up with the two of you?”
“Andrew? I don’t know. I haven’t talked to him for a while now. He’s been cold to me lately.”
“Hmmm…”
“What’s with the ‘hmmm…’?” I asked her curiously.
“Oh, nothing. It just felt nice saying that word. You’re right, he has been avoiding us, or you. I think you better talk to him.” That was all she said.
I nodded at her. Before she left, I told her that I have something important to tell her. She smiled at me and headed towards her first class, and I went to mine. I sat on my chair, and gazed outside the window. Someone slammed a book on a desk. It made me flinched. It was Andrew. Oh! Just Great, I quickly told myself. I forgot that he was seating beside me. His dirty blonde hair covered his beautiful face. I caught his eye, looking at me, but he quickly turned away. In the middle of the class, I was called over at the office. When I got there, I saw my parents talking to the principal.
“There she is.” The principal gestured at me to let me sit. “Are you sure about moving, dear?”
I nodded.
“Why so soon? Why won’t you finish this school year?”
I looked over at my parents. “Well, my grandma is sick, and she needs me. And… I haven’t seen her for a while.”
She just smiled at me and replied, “It’s your choice, my dear. Your parents finished the withdrawal papers that they have to sign. When are you leaving?”
“Cool. I’ll be spending my Christmas at grandmother’s place. So, pretty much after next week. Is it fine to stay here for a week?” she nodded, and I continued. “Please don’t let the teachers say a word, okay?”
My mom was glaring at me when we were heading towards their car. “Mom, what is with that look?”
She sighed. “I still don’t get it, Anastasia. Why are you doing this?”
“Mom, you don’t have to get it. It is for my sake and everybody’s. I can’t stay here, mom. What if I turn into one, and I can’t control myself? I can hurt you. Also, haven’t you been keeping it from me, what I’d become? I can feel something inside me, Mom. I have to find out everything. That’s why I wanted to move in at grandma’s place. Don’t worry, I will promise you right here that everything will be fine. Now, you have to get going. I still have to tell them everything. This might be a rough day.” I told my mom. I hugged her and dad. I waved at them before they left.
I went back to class. I felt everyone’s eyes on me. I sunk on my chair. After a while, the bell rang for lunch. When I looked up, Andrew was infront of me and his brown eyes were staring straight at me.
“Oh, hey, what’s up?” I told him while straightening myself, ready to leave.
He grabbed my hand as I walked, but I pulled my hand as quickly as I could. I glared at him. “I just wanted to talk to you.”
I sighed. “Oh, great. I also want to talk to you. Meet me at the usual table in the cafeteria. Bye!” I told him and walked out of the room, not turning back.
I was at the cafeteria door when I heard Brenda call my name from our table. I turned to look at her. She was already with Angelique. I started walking towards them, and then I sat.
I sighed and said, “Hey guys! What’s up?”
Angelique raised an eyebrow at me. “I thought you’re going to say something?”
Uh oh. She knows. I told myself.
“Yeah. Let’s just wait for Andrew. I told him to meet us here.” I replied to the silence, smiling. I caught them exchange glances.
“Here he comes.” Brenda said. Andrew brought his tray and sat with us.
“So, everybody’s present. Guys, I’m pretty much serious here. So, you better listen carefully. One more thing, don’t start a ruckus, ok?” I told them. Brenda stared at me, waiting for the news. Angelique was drinking her milk. Andrew didn’t look at me, but I was pretty sure that he was listening.
I continued, “You see. I’m moving to another school after winter break.”
It was worse than I thought. Andrew almost chocked from what he was drinking and then glared at me. Angelique didn’t look at me. Brenda slammed her hands on the table.
“What!?” her toned voice, very loud and clear, made the people nearby stare at us. When she realized it, she cleared her throat and lowered her voice. “Ania, what are you talking about? What do you mean by move? Where?”
I glanced at Angelique, and back at them. “I’m so sorry. It was sudden. I’m moving at my Grandma’s place, up north. She’s… uhm, she’s sick and she asked for me. I didn’t have a choice. I really have to go to her. Brends, are you mad?” she shook her head in disapproval. I knew that this day will be tough. I knew that they won’t like it, especially that I lied.
“When are you leaving?” Andrew asked me. There was something in his voice that I couldn’t figure out.
I looked at him and said, “The day after the school ends for winter break. So, it’ll be next week, on Saturday maybe.”
“Oh, okay. Is that all what you’re going to say? I might as well leave. Bye.” Andrew stood up and started walking out of the cafeteria. I was annoyed by his attitude. I stood up and followed him. I found him by his locker. I slammed his locker door.
“Andrew, what’s wrong with you? Why are you acting so stupid? How dare you talk to me like that?” I snapped at his face.
He didn’t answer me, but I forced him to. “What is it to you? Nothing’s wrong with me.”
“What are you saying? You’ve been acting strange lately, and you’ve been avoiding me ever since this school year started! What did I do?”
“Will you just shut up?!” he snapped at me.
I was surprised by what he said. It was the first time he snapped at me like that. I stepped back a little, trembling. I tried to hold back my tears. “Ania…” he told me. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to.” I knew he was sorry, but I was surprised. He tried to take my hand, but I shrugged. I moved away from him. Tears streamed down from my eyes.
“Stay away from me, you jerk. I cared for you, and this is what you pay me? What happened with our friendship? I thought you were my best friend. You’re horrible. I don’t want to see your face again.” I turned my back to him and started to walk. I stopped and slightly turned to look at him. I smiled and said, “Thanks for everything. Goodbye, Andrew.”
I was in club activities. I told them that I was leaving. They begged me not to leave, but they soon understood my grandmother’s situation, which was a lie. I told them that they could still contact me.
“Who’s going to replace you, then?” a freshman girl asked.
“Who do you think is the best, other than me?” I replied. Everybody pointed at Kharina. Kharina truly was the best among the rest. She helped me with everything that I couldn’t handle. I agreed with the others. I chose her to be the next leader in the music club.
I took my sweater from my locker, and put it on. It was now six- thirty in the evening. I ran straight to my car and got in. It was much colder than before. I turned the engine and headed straight home.
