BROKEN GLASS CHAPTER 16
I looked down at my stomach letting the water run down my back. The cold sting was more than enough to cloud my thoughts. It didn’t matter I already knew what I was going to do, and there wasn’t any way of stopping me. My mind was made up, and my only regret would be leaving Eric.
I pulled myself up into a stand. It was strange how my legs felt weak, sort of like I was still human only I knew deep down I wasn’t. Through all of the books I’ve read, I’ve presumed that all vampires were virtually indestructible and not weak in the least bit. But here I stood, bruised and battered at the point of collapsing.
Though every bit of me protested, I slowly turned off the water. I didn’t want to step out of the stall I wanted to stay there, even if the water was no longer running. I wanted the moment to last.......Last as my last sane moment, a second in time that I would remember as if it were the closet thing to peace as I was going to get ever again.
With a final sigh I climbed back out and throw my clothes back on not caring. They take me as I am or not at all.
The same woman who had lead me to the room, was standing patiently outside of the door. She smiled warmly when she noticed I was creeping out. I didn’t really care, let alone even both to return the smile, or even acknowledge her. Instead my eyes began to search for an escape. Anything, a door, a window......Something sharp.
The room was too basic, like a prison cell. There was only a bed, a small chair, the entrance and the door leading to the bathroom.
Nothing I can use, not in this room.
“Miss? I’d appreciate it if you could sit her willing, without involving the lord any further. It would only mean bad for my lady.”
She bowed respectively. I rolled my eyes and went to sit on the chair. She stumbled behind me and began messing with my hair. Another woman, the one with dark hair, came to where I sat. She was carrying a basket; which held several odds and ends. Things such as assorted brushes and various containers of makeup.
She handed the other woman two brushes and knelt before me. With gentle ease that I hadn’t felt since I arrived, she cuffed my face. Forcing my glance in her direction, to where she could examine my face.
Then she set to work fumbling numerous types of makeup and god knows what else onto my face. I feared that when she moved away I’d be left as a clown.
But when she held up a small brass mirror, I was shocked to see the reflection. It wasn’t her fault I looked the way I did. It was my own doing, not that I’d give a damn whether or not I was pretty or ugly. It wasn’t like I was going to see Eric anytime soon, but......I could help but wish that I was hideous. I wasn’t though, the woman was obviously skilled at what she did.
I half expected to have red rings under my eyes from all of my useless tears, or peeling lips from my lack of hydration. But instead, I looked too good. I wanted to run my fingers down my face, to cut the skin that bared the unnecessary beauty. To wipe away the light pink of my skin, to eliminate the light golden eye shadow, anything to return to my formal plainness.
I stopped myself, thinking of the first woman’s words. ‘It would only mean bad for my lady.’
It wasn’t that I was afraid of him, I just knew that if I started pointless stubborn acts he’d pay closer attention to me, and to complete what I was planning.....I needed to be unseen for at least a minute which was already close to impossible. I’d just have to try wouldn’t I?
When the first woman finished doing my hair the other two women walked over to me.
I couldn’t let my eyes stray from the dress, that the red-headed woman seemed to shelter as though it were her child.
“Up with you!” She shouted in my direction.
“Deenila! Do not speak to lady in such a manor!” The first woman scolded the red head harshly before kneeling before me mumbling an apology.
Then when she finished she stood and continued to rant at the other woman.
I stood up and began to wait for the bickering to end.
“Shut up right now Cassandra! You are under my directions! Not under some common rat’s! She isn’t a lady until tomorrow so law doesn’t bid us to treat her as one!”
I smirked.
“Is someone PMS-ing or is that a habit demons teach their children?”
I lashed out at the one I assumed was Deenila. I didn’t normally stand up for myself, but there was something in the back of my mind that was pushing me on. I couldn’t hold my temper.
“While look who just gained a backbone! Don’t speak to me as if I were below you. for the moment your dirt, if you wanted to keep that little grin of yours I‘d go back to be spineless! “
That did it. I’d have to probably wait longer to find my way out but I just couldn’t resist. I slung my hand across her face, much to my surprise she bled from the nose.
“What was that?” I challenged in soft voice. Much to sarcastic for it to be sincere.
“HOW DARE YOU, YOU LITTLE TROLL!!!”
She raised her hand at me, preparing to return the favor. Someone suddenly caught her hand.
I directed myself to them. Whatever the creature was, one thing was certain it wasn’t human.
It’s skin was a chalky red, that helped brighten their metallic silver eyes. But the thing that stood out on the creature the most were it’s massive horns, that seemed to curve up in spirals leading to very sharp points. I flinched as the creature released her arm.
“ONE MORE SLIP! AND OUR LORD WON’T THINK TWICE OF TAKING YOUR LIFE YOU WORTHLESS HUMAN!”
It’s voice was sharp and slithered into my ears like a serpent.
She sighed and turned back to me, her green eyes burning into mine.
“My lady, strip. I’m to dress you.”
I looked at the room full of people and titled my head.
“Now, please!”
I slowly removed my shirt then pants. I felt incredibility bare and open, and the need to cover myself was nearly overpowering.
She slowly un-spread the white dress and began to pull it over my head roughly. The other woman quickly began tying the corset in the back, well Deenila tied the lace stringing that lead all the way down the front.
My fears were answered as I felt the vile drape over my head. I was.....Attending the wedding....
as the bride.
“Now come on, My lady. We mustn’t keep the lord waiting. “
She begin to lead me towards the door, her strides almost to fast to keep up with.
The hall was completely different than the room I’d been keep in. It was as if I were underground. The walls were made up of all sorts of stones in irregular patterns. Some stones small others bolder sized.
“Hurry up!” Screamed Deenila. I went slower just to taunt her.
Each wall had maybe five thick wooden doors each. It was obvious that they were designed to keep people out.....Or in.
Eventually we reached a set of iron stairs, that spun upwards.
“Behave yourself in front of others. Trust me Daren will let into you twice as hard if you make him look like a fool in his own court.”
It wouldn’t be my fault, didn’t these people realize he was insane?
I nodded, not wanting the she-witch to cause a scene.
“Good.”
Then we began to climb up the stairs, in complete silence. She seems alright, a little bitchy but who wouldn’t be, under the rule of a jerk like Daren.
Only a little longer.....I kept rearranging my plan in my head. What would be the first step?
The scene around me began to change, from a cellar setting to an elegant maze of halls. The wall paper was decorated with light pink roses, and smooth gold lines that glimmered as they shot vertically downwards.
It took two turns to the right, and seven to the left, before we reached the main room. The whole time I hadn’t seen a single window, or any other living beings for that matter.
The main room was huge and only had one other entrance, which was through two massive iron doors. The entire room was decorated with the same rose design as the halls, and I could see another stairway that led to a third floor. Only this one was made of a white marble-looking stone.
Deenila seemed to pause and look around mindlessly for a full minute, staring off into space like she was set in deep thought.
She grinned like she was about to burst into laughter. The ends of her lips twitching and eventually her eyes even tightened.
“We haven’t all day!”
Someone growled loudly, and the floor shook a little from the volume.
I turned around wildly trying to find the source, but came up empty.
Deenila rolled her eyes and grabbed my wrist.
“This way idiot.”
Butterflies began to beat up the inside of my stomach and the adrenaline was crawling up my spine, realization kicked in......I was really going to do it, wasn’t I?
I inhaled deeply, time to get this show on the road......
As Deenila opened the doors, I instantly knew the music. It came as a shock that demons would use that one...the classic dun, dun, dada....In the style of loud screeching violins.
I gritted my teeth. It was like a giant ballroom, only it was outside. I looked towards the distance past the small marble balconies rail, all I could see in the distance were mountains, giant dusty red ones that went on forever.
Deenila pulled me in front of her, and motioned for me to walk. I looked forward. To see my captor seeing at ease in what could only be a thrown.
He raised an eyebrow, seeming less amused than me. I frowned, What’s the next step......
Deenila shoved me ruefully towards him, making me almost land face first.
“Go!” She hissed under her breathe. I sighed and trudged towards him, nearly tripping over my white heels. I looked to my right to see rows of people sitting in white folding chairs, then to my left which was an open space, a small one at that.
Daren sighed and rested his face in one of his hands. Deenila was right, but if all goes well I won’t have to be here for the consequences.
I grinned in his direction, then winked. His face crinkled in confusion and I didn’t give him long enough to think about it.
I ran as fast as my legs could, until I reached the rail. I turned around to were my back was too it.
Daren was only a few feet away. I prepared myself, then flipped him off as I leaned back against the rail.
“See you in hell!”
I laughed as I fell backwards over the rail.. I was shocked at how far the drop really was, but I kept a smile on my face, as Daren watched in horror.
I heard voices screaming and yelling from behind him but it was too late I was falling so fast, and it was only a matter of time before I reached the ground.
The fear of landing began to overthrow my calmness and regret was washing over me just before the impact.
What about Eric?
*HA FIXED IT!*
