I turned to face him, stunned to see his smile curvy and slim. A victorious smile, one that read ‘I won.’ I felt the need to scream, it simply wasn’t fair! I was suppose to runaway and continue living my life.......Continue living. His smile flopped into a straight, firm line.
“You can be really stupid when you want to be. You that. right? Vampires are very much alive. If not more so than any of you stubborn, insufficient, pests of humans. Ha! Most of your kind are little good than food!”
Insufficient. The word plated over in my head a few times, this way and that. Trying to understand what he meant.
A pest. Something bothersome....A burden of chance, little more than a meal.
I glared at him, wishing my hurt would seep into him, make him hurt several times more. Break him, without touching him.
I had to get away, it was of no use to scream or yell at him. It wouldn’t do either of us good. I pushed my numb body towards the opposite edge of the bed and throw my legs over the side.
Carefully, I leaned back on my hands and pressed forward onto my feet. It was like holding a rock up with Jell-O, it wouldn’t work.
My legs slipped and I ended up flat on my butt, the cold floor sending chills up my spin.
The full effects started to kick in. I was sick, my head felt heavy like the tiniest push would send it crashing to the floor. For reasons uncertain my throat felt raw and began to burn like someone was shoveling hot steel down into my wind pipe.
The longer I sat there dumbfounded the stronger the chills became, the more my throat seemed to ache. Until finally I began to numb, almost as though all the water in my body was freezing.
I heard a sigh from behind me then Derek mumbled under his breathe, several strong words...... Very strong words, that flowed together almost as one. I frowned, what was the mater now?
Another chill rolled through me, and this time delivering a stabbing pain to the tip of my spine.
I grid my teeth in response, fighting back the desire to scream at the top of my lungs. What kind of cold was this? Why ever I was sick, I could definitely rule out the rhino virus.
I flinch as another wave of pain struck me.
What was happening? In a sudden rush I lost all the feeling in my arms from my shoulders down. I tried to grip my hand into a fist, when my fingers wouldn’t move into the right shape; or move at all for that matter, so instead I focused on moving one finger at a time. Nothing. Not even a twitch.
I started to panic, what if I couldn’t move my legs???
With a hopeless attempt, I tried to bend my legs; even resorting to one at a time. Still my results were the same, not a single sign of response from any of my limbs.
I sat there in complete silence not even bothering to think. What good would it do? Instead I gave up the fight and like chilling feeling consume me.
If it weren’t for me being able to suddenly see the top of the dresser, when on the floor I can only see the bottom half, I wouldn’t have known that I wasn’t on the floor anymore. The numbing cold was such an overwhelming feeling that it was impossible to tell the difference from the floor and the bed.
“Really Ryain......Are you mentally challenged? If your not smart enough to stay under the blankets I’m going to tie you down.”
If my lips weren’t iced together in a concrete smirk, I would of frowned.
Leave me alone.
“Now, now Ryain we both know that’s not what you want.” The stupid jerk was sure to fit as much sarcasm into each word as possible.
No, your right. I want you stay so I can beat you with a bat.
“And where you do you plan on getting this bat from?”
If I could see his face I would have seen a grin spread ear to ear across his....Disturbing face, but I couldn’t I was facing the dresser and couldn’t turn to face him.
I was sitting rather straight and only for that reason I was almost glad that I was numb beyond discomfort. Right up until I began to tumble backwards.
Just my luck, I landed in Derek’s lap. He bent his head down to look at my face.
I was right, sort of; He was smiling, but it was much wider than I had imagined.
“Why how nice of you to drop in Ryain!” I tried to glare at him with my eyes, and failed pathetically.
He put his hands on my face, one on each side. I could help nut think he was trying monstrously hard to piss me off.
Then after a few minutes I felt the heat against my cheeks, like a hot iron.
“Hey your color’s back! Well not that you ever had much of one.....”
Go to hell.
“No thanks, I’ve got plans. Maybe Cynthia will want to go instead.”
“Go where?”
Cynthia’s voice came from the direction of the love seat. It wasn’t long until she came into view.
She looked down into my face.
“Wow, you learn fast......”
Learn what???
“To listen.”
I’m not listening. I can’t move.
“Well I could fix that.....Ha! It’s not like you can protest.”
That’s what you think now.
“Be nice Ryain. I’m Helping you.”
Right, and by melting my face. What if I like the cold?
“Well there we go! I’ll actually enjoy touching you now! Knowing that you hate it so much.”
His sarcasm was like a blade ripping deeper into me. Couldn’t he shut his face for a five minutes?
“Well you could ask me to be quiet.”
Would you if I did.
“Good point I wouldn’t.”
I had an itching feeling to sigh, but couldn’t.
He place on of his hands over my lips. It wasn’t as bothersome as the first time. I couldn’t feel the weight of it, and the heat was iron hot.....Yet.
I felt my lips crack as they separated from each other. They were chapped and raw like someone had ran a knife across them.
“Whops, ha ha. That’s a side effect from the heat. I’m saying sorry though.”
I peeled my lips open.
“Of course not.” My voice was scratchy and somewhat harsh coming out a whisper rather than a yell.
“Wow, Ryain that’s an attractive insult. To you mind speaking up a bit?”
“Stupid leech you can hear me just fine.”
“Yeah....Point?”
I wanted to look away but still could move my head.
Derek pulled me up by my shoulders until I was sitting up again. Instead of letting go of my shoulders he pulled me into a massive hug.
“If your fond of your limbs, I’m advising you to let go.” He chuckled lightly.
“I’d listen, but....No on second thought, I wouldn't.”
He tightened his grip. I couldn’t protest anymore, it wasn’t my aching throat it was....A pull, making me behave. I wanted badly to snap the pull in half and slap him but at the same time.......I...I wanted to.....get.......Closer.
The familiar sickening taste of vomit, boiled into my mouth. How could I?
With a mumbled laugh, Derek pulled me into his lap.
Jerk..... He was going to make me suffer as much as possible wasn’t he?
To love someone you hate......How’s that possible?
“Beats me. It’s a frustrating feeling, isn’t it?”
Derek’s voice wasn’t sarcastic, only distant like he was thinking of something else. For reasons unknown, it seemed painful for him.
I was going to say something else until almost all of my skin began to burn with a fiery feeling. I jumped up in pain.
“Ouch! Cool it Derek! God.......”
Instinctively I began checking myself for open flames. Derek started to laugh.
“I swear I didn’t catch you on fire! Ha ha......”
I grumbled, the shooting pain was coming back, now that my skin had thawed.
“Cynthia tell the mage she’s ready for her meds.”
I shudder, there’s almost nothing I hate more than medicine.
“So you like that pain more?”
“Stay out of my head parasite.”
“Ouch.....I’m not a leech any more, eh? A parasite?” He chuckled.
“And who is I’m living off of? “
“I dunno Derek.....The whole f***ing world for all I know!”
“Ha ha. Hysterical smart one. Be good and get under the covers or I’ll torment you more!”
I mumbled and pulled the thick blanket back. My hand felt like a piece of string and it took a lot of endurance and strength, but I eventually succeeded in becoming somewhat comfortable. Through out all my trouble Derek was rolling in laughter and taunting my slowness. I really want to punch him, really, really badly.
“Hey go for it! You’d only hurt yourself. Miss Spaghetti arms.” I groaned and turned away from him, to where my back was facing him rather than me.
“Your imprecisely stubborn!”
I ignored him, hoping that he’d go away.
I was almost asleep, despite the pain, when I heard footsteps in the hall. Everything echoed in this castle, the littlest of sounds could be heard from hundreds of feet away. I tightened up, knowing that it could only be the providers of my medicine.
The door creaked open slowly, and the small mage bowed as gracefully as one could with a trey in their hands. I turned to Derek, he nodded lightly in her direction and she enter. Cynthia wasn’t far behind her, holding something black, that was draped over her arm.
Suddenly something stumbled to the floor, breaking the silence with a loud thump.
It was a deep purple shade, easily mistaken for black. I only deference because it was mine. My I-pod.
In a flash Cynthia bent down and retrieved it.
“Sorry Ryain!” She began to twist and turn it in her hand.
“What is this?”
She ran her fingers over the smooth surface. I rolled my eyes.
“An I-pod.”
“What is it for?”
“Listening to music....”
“Really.....” She walked over to me and handed me it and the ‘Something black’ she’d been holding. It was my jacket.....Wow that could have came in earlier.
“I know.” She mumbled, I fished in my pocket it until I found my little set of headphones. Then I plugged them in as fast I could and slung them on. Some heavy screamo would do me wonders.
I pressed the on button and began surfing through the titles until I found my favorite. AFI - Prelude 12/21. I loved it, but the only problem was it was a really short song. The high pitch melody began to play.
Every single vampire in the room slung their hands up in and onto there ears. I laughed and turned the song to an Escape the fate on. I couldn’t have told you the name if it was in front of my face.
They all began to relax, I did too. The calming screams were a nice change compared to the silence.
“Ryain what the hell are listening to? It’s not music!”
I grumbled and decided to change the genre. Ne-yo’s so sick.
“Will I ever understand you?”
I flipped him off.
“Will you vampires ever realize what an I-pod is?”
“Ha ha. Cynthia might not but...”
Derek reached into his pants’ pocket and reveled a slick silver I-pod. Kind of shiny to the point of distraction.
“Oh...Cool.” I rolled my eyes and turned the volume up. When the song finished to something soft and soothing. Evanescence.
“Why couldn’t you of chosen that first?” Derek frowned.
“YOU COULD HAVE SAVED ME A HEADACHE!”
I sighed and continued to listen to my favorite band.
Just as Amy was about to finish the chorus in ‘Even in death’ the music disappeared.
“Hey!”
Derek had a guilty smirk on his face. I wanted to scream. My bliss among sorrow ripped away. for amusement.
JERK!
“YOU TWO! Our mage has other things to do!”
I turned to the little Asian lady waiting patiently in front of me. I smiled. My lifesaver.
“Hey! I helped too!”
Derek began fume, why should I give him credit for tormenting me?
“Whatever.”
He mumbled, when no one responded. The lady smiled, and sat the trey on the bed.
There were several little glass vials, they all had the same thick green something in them.
“Derek. You are to make her take one of these every four hours. Miss a dose, you’ll be missing a mate.”
The lady voice was firm but respective, and with a bow she began to leave.
Was I suppose to.....Drink that?
“No smart one you look at it!”
Derek rolled his eyes and forced a vial into my hand.
“Drink up, Princess.”
Oh the irony. I unscrewed the top. The stench was unbearable rolling of in almost visible waves.
“For the record I hate you.”
I plugged my nose and chugged it down in a single gulp. It was like spinach only much more bitter and salty. I wanted to scrap the leftovers of my tongue and then heave but I held back.
“Wow, you actually took your Meds, if only you’d listen to everything I said.”
The pain almost dulled right away. It was such a relief I didn’t even bother to smart off to Derek.
I settled back into my spot and reveled myself into the blankets more.
“I want my I-pod back!”
“Fine!” Derek slung me my sanity then I felt him get off the bed.
“I’ll see you in four hours. Stay covered up for the love of God!”
I quickly shoved the earphones into my ears and blared the music.
I shut my eyes and tried to sleep. I couldn’t, All I felt like doing was resting, not sleeping. I was afraid of what I’d dream.......He couldn’t get me.....I wouldn’t let him. The image of the creature continued to flash through my thoughts. It’s massive jaw opening back and his fangs baring. Ready to devour....Me.
I could feel my fingers shaking a little at the thought.......I could also feel someone else’s fingers running through my hair.
