Chapter 1: Reoccuring Nightmare
I’m right here. Look at me. Someone please look at me! Or I’ll fade away…
The faint words echoed around me as I ran to where the voice of the little girl was. “It’s okay! I’m coming; you don’t have to be scared!” The dark empty space was covered in fog making it impossible for me to see more than one foot in front of me. The drumming of my heart quickly sped up and became so loud until all I could hear was its pounds. I gasped for breath each time one of my legs collided with the ground; all the muscles in my legs screamed at me to stop, but I couldn’t. I wouldn’t. I just somehow had to make it… but make it where? I slowed my pace in wonder of what was going on. I – I? Who am I?
A sudden jolt brought me back to the world, the real world as my mother shook me by my shoulders desperately trying to wake me from my nightmare. With a gasp, I opened my eyes and welcomed the sight of the worried look on my mother’s face, and launched myself into her arms.
“Casey –” My mother started. I buried my face into her shoulder and gladly let the tears come. With a gentle hand, she calmly rubbed my back just like she always did whenever the nightmare would return.
“I – I was so scared! I didn’t remem – ber who I was.” The panic in my voice was as noticeable as a piercing shriek in a quiet room.
Suddenly a wave of exhaustion passed over me. I was incredibly tired, but I was scared to close my eyes, scared to have that same nightmare once again.
“Shh, shh… You’re okay now, so go back to sleep. I’ll stay here until you go back to sleep, okay?” My mother’s concerned filled whisper slowly began to calm my fears until I finally closed my eyes and fell into sweet, lovely dreams.
