Run. That's all I can think or do. I must get away from this immediate danger. I can feel it's breath on my neck. My arms and legs are getting scraped as I break through branches and roots. I don't even feel my feet anymore as they continue to move. A tree branch about 3 feet wide comes out of nowhere and runs into my gut, making me stop abruptly. I see my blonde hair as it whips my face. I can't help but think of Cody, all alone back at camp, eagerly waiting for me to return. I let my eyes close. The thing has stopped behind me. Surely this is the end.
Funny how when you're sure you're about to die, you're filled with hope, and ideas. I smile and spin around. It lingers above me, mouth open and saliva spilling out. It has a Gorilla's mouth, a cheetah's sleek, swift body, and can stand on it's hind legs to be 8 feet tall.
"Katya! Grab on!" I knew he'd come! I see a vine dangling next to my head and grab it. The thing looks surprised and angrier than ever as I get lifted higher and higher out of it's reach. My feet find a thick tree branch and I release the vine. His dark eyes and brown hair greet my as I fall into his arms. "Hey." he says.
"Cody, you are amazing. How'd you know I was in trouble?" I ask. He smiles.
"It wasn't that hard to figure out after your blood curdling scream." he says with a wink. My cheeks turn bright red.
The beast starts yelling and kicking at the tree with incredible strength. The tree starts moving back and forth. I scramble higher up the tree followed by Cody. If this tree's gonna fall, I want as much of a head start as I can get.
As I reach the highest part of the tree that I dare go, I turn and see Cody. "Katya!" he screams. We're both at least 100 feet up. He's losing his grip and I'm too far away to help.
"Cody!" I scream as he falls away from the branch. We were the only two left on the earth and now I'm watching him fall to his death. I turn my head into the branch and cry. A few moments later, the tree starts to fall.
