~EPILOGUE~
“Rory?”
He looked up from his lunch. “Clea?”
She took a deep breath. “I am here to apologise and thank you.”
“Oh?”
“Oh yeah. I lost myself to some freak. Well, technically YOU”RE the freak. Everyone says so.”
Rory looked down.
“But I don’t think so.”
He looked up.
“It was so GOOD of you to give me space, give me time to be a bitch. Now I’m all good again, and if you want to, we can be together again.”
Rory looked thoughtful. He stood up.
“That’s all I’ve ever wanted since I first met you.”
Clea’s face went pink.
“It’s true.”
Happy tears sprang into her eyes. She leaned forward and kissed him out of pure joy. Rory stumbled, then laughed, wrapping his arms around her.
I watched from out of sight. I felt a smile creep across my face.
On my way to my locker, I bumped into some of the boys from the soccer squad. “Hey! Are you playing with us today?”
Shrieks and giggles came from across the hall. I groaned. It was the queen bee, and her whole hive buzzing behind her.
“Misinterpretation of words, guys,” I said, frowning. “Ignore them.”
The guys nodded and walked off.
“See you on the field at lunch!” I called.
“Elanore!” said Lyla, laughing in her horrible high pitch. “Paul wasn’t good enough for you, so you get with the whole team?”
Apparently that was a good joke.
“Other girls play too, you know. And anyway, you’re one to talk like that!” I put my hands on my hips and faced her. I looked into her beady green eyes. “I’ve been reading your MySpace lately. Who’s this Rowan dude, eh?”
Lyla blinked.
“Yeah, who is he?” piped up Jade from behind her.
“I saw his picture,” swooned Becky. “He is HAWT. Even hawtter than Paul!”
“OMG, no way!” and they all started babbling about hot guys.
Of course, Rachel’s plan had been brilliant. Everyone who is anyone looks at Lyla’s page. So everyone looked at it and saw the saucy comments from the mysterious Rowan guy. What a scandal!
At lunch, I headed to the oval. I joined the soccer players and ran around the field, not to prove a point to anyone, but just to have fun. Tanielle, Kay, Rachel, Clea and Rory were cheering me on from the sidelines.
I smiled. I passed to Lachlan who scored a perfect goal. We danced around the field in triumph.
I watched my friends cheer me on and jump and smile. Has Lyla ever had this, or had she had only followers all her life?
I knew one thing—she was missing out on a hell of a lot.
