Dear Mrs. Michaels,

Now, I know what you're thinking. Why on EARTH did these two nutballs give me a notebook cut in half?! Well, it was Julie's idea, actually. But first, let me tell you the background information.

Last Friday, Julie came to my house to sleep over. We both agreed that you're our favorite teacher EVER (no offence to the other teachers, of course), so we decided to get you a present for the end of the year. It took us nearly all night to decide on something good enough for you, but we finally thought of it. We would buy you a notebook and fill it up with our writing! It seemed like the perfect plan.

But…what should we write? Should we pick a certain topic, or just randomly write anything that pops into our brains? We deliberated over this for most of the time we were at the library today. Julie suggested that we write something like a journal, starting from the night before the first day of school. I thought it was a good idea at first, but then I realized that I'd have to have the memory of an elephant to be able to remember that far back.

So, for now, I'm just going to write a letter to you. I could probably fill this whole notebook up with the thoughts that I'm thinking right now, but I don't have the time or patience for that. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to stick to the main ideas.

Okay, returning to when Julie thought of cutting the notebook in half. Today, at around 6:30 PM, we met each other at the library to start this. But, as I predicted, we couldn't stay on task for more than a minute. We made a feeble attempt at creating a graphic organizer to plan the whole thing out, but all we ended up with was an empty rectangle.

Finally, Julie got the idea to cut the notebook in half-the top half for me to write, and the bottom half for her. At first, I thought she was crazy, but it seemed more and more like a good idea as she cut more and more of the paper into equal pieces.

…Until she cut the covers. I didn't think it would look as good with the covers halved, but she insisted. So, the covers were cut. When we flexed it around a little, it looked as if it were going to snap into two pieces. So, I warn you to be careful with our little eco-friendly notebook, because I'm not sure how long it will last.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that you're the most amazing teacher I know-and I'm not just saying that. No other teacher has written me rec-ommendation letters (not that I'm aware of, at least), and no other teacher has really inspired me to keep writing. I hope you enjoy our gift, because you deserve it.

Best wishes,

Charlotte Powers
