Once upon a time, not so long ago...
"Gina, where's those waffles table seven ordered, why ain't they there?"
"They aren't done ye…"
"Damn it, what are they doing back there?"
"Now!" Gina's boss yelled. Gina hated her job-it was the only diner in town, so it was always packed with men off the docks, which was okay because most of them left good tips. It was a dead-end job though, going nowhere, a 9-5 and whenever-she-was-needed-after-that shift, with a bitch for a boss and not much of a way out short of getting a job on the docks.
Gina sighed. It's not worth it, she thought, But there's not really anywhere else to go. As she poured the coffee for table nine, she looked around. Seems less crowded today. Guess that means I'll get off on time, for once.
Because I'd know, Tommy thought. He took a deep breath of the salty air to try to clear his head. "I'm not sure, it's not here yet."
"Obviously not!" Tommy's boss snapped. "What time is it?"
"Well…I guess you might as well go get lunch, you already worked through yours."
"Thanks." Tommy liked his boss, more or less. He was a little short-tempered at times, but overall a good person.
