Hidden in the trees, Archer stood watching the little girl from afar, as he had done so many times in the past. The girls jet black hair glistened in the sunlight, and her smile glistened as she hurried down the sidewalk to a waiting car. Archer was too far away to see her beautiful light brown eyes, but he knew them well.
The breathers had named her Eve.
The breathers who had become her parents, who had given Archer's masters only child a beautiful home, love, and happiness, and raised her as their own-and the mother had no idea that Eve wasn't hers.
Tears sprang to Archer's eyes as he remembered the day he had given the baby away to protect her. So much pain remained from what had been the hardest decision of his life. Archer had never been the same.
And now it was almost sixteen years later and time for Eve's transformation to begin. Soon, the girl would begin to change, and she wouldn't understand why. She needed guidance; she needed to know what was in store.
But, most importantly, Archer needed to get her to safety before the dark ladies minions found her.
Eve's birth had long been foretold by the vampire king's court witch The Wise Woman who predicted her future could go one of two ways : Either she becomes the queen of vampires when she is of age or she breaks the curse by the use of her royal blood to make the vampires human forever.
When Archer had returned home from hunting that night, the baby''s parents were lying dead in the bedroom and his mate, Olivia was lying in the nursery with a wooden stake through her heart. The Lady Cassandra had been here and somehow all that had been left on the floor was a tiara and clothes and a big pile of ashes. The baby was fast asleep in her crib with her bat teddy beside her tucked into a pink blanket with the royal vampire logo of a sun and a moon on it. This was no ordinary baby.
She was a vampire princess.
Archer knew he had to protect the child by switching her for a human one. In the human world, the princess would have a chance. They knew nothing of vampires, much less then the slayers , so prized for their power and revered for their ability to bring peace by force. Among humans, the child would have a chance at life.
While the Dark Lady's minions searched the manor for their mistress and the child , Archer wrapped the child in a blanket and exited by way of the window. He went in search of a baby who was about to die.
As he sneaked into the hospital, he transformed into a priest and and then it occurred to him, a footballer he met had just lost his baby and taking advantage of the situation and his grief, he persuaded the footballer to secretly adopt the baby girl and never tell his wife. Archer knew there would be nothing wrong with the father, but the mother may or may not know because of the maternal instincts.
In the care of a rich family, Eve would want for nothing. She would have a far better life with them then living in a dirty squalid flat drinking the blood of plague ridden rats for a living with him and a group of feral vampires.
It was the only way to keep the little princess safe.
As Archer returned home alone that night, he was filled with guilt and regret. He had drugged the princess to make her appear human before he handed her over and she would not know what she was.
He hadn't only lost the baby that day. Ashamed-of his own behavior as a protector abandoning the greatest vampire treasure and breaking his promise to the girls grandfather- the vampire king. In one evening, he lost everything.
In the years to come, Archer had watched Eve grow up from a distance. Although giving her up had been the hardest thing Archer had ever done, it only mattered that the princess was safe.
Now, however, that was about to change. Once Eve's transformation was complete, other vampires would be able to see that she was a vampire, too. After they saw the birthmark, they'd know she wasn't just any vampire, but the heir to the vampire throne-and that put her in danger.
Archer had to go to the princess and warn her of what was to come…but how? . . . .
There was a cry in the darkness & it was the only sound to be heard in Taylor Mansion as the only thing that was left alive from a horrible and vicious attack was lying fast asleep, but was awoken by the sound of footsteps.
The hunt was over. The woman was dead in her bed, the husband on the bedroom floor, the female keeper in her brightly colored bedroom, surrounded by her artistic pictures and half-finished portraits. That only left the little one, a newborn baby girl, alone in her crib, with a mobile of a bats hanging over her. The Lady Cassandra Taylor was nowhere to be seen ; all that was left on the floor was her cape and tiara
The female keeper's partner Archer paused on the landing. The toddler's room was at the very top of the house. Archer walked up the stairs, his feet silent on the carpeting. Then he pushed open the attic door, and he walked in. His hair was dark brown and his eyes were light blue and he wore a black tank top and his leather jacket and his leather trousers. He had followed the smell of the red bloodstains that was on the floor. His shoes were pure white trainers: you could hardly see the moon reflected in them, tiny and half full. The real moon shone through the casement window. Its light was not bright, and it was diffused by the mist, but the Archer would not need much light. The moonlight was enough. It would do.
It was now Archer's job now to protect this baby girl and get her to safety and keep her on track because this was no ordinary baby. This was a princess, a vampire princess, and now the heir to the throne of vampires. The baby has a destiny to fulfill and it was now Archer's job to keep her on track.
He could make out the shape of the child in the crib, head and limbs and torso.
As he looked over into the crib, he saw fast asleep, the sleeping baby Eve. Without waking her, he scooped her up into his arms and he held her with one arm as he wrapped her up in her pink blanket with a triquetra on it. He heard voices from outside and as he looked out the nursery window, he saw people coming and he took the baby and fled the nursery.
As he made his way out of the nursery, he approached the stairs slowly and as he started to walk down the stairs, he grabbed a cuddly toy bunny rabbit wearing only a small waistcoat that was lying on the steps. He sneaked into the kitchen and luckily the kitchen counter was empty apart from a big silver kitchen knife that was lying upstairs in the female keepers chest and climbed out the front window that had been smashed open and he climbed onto the silver kitchen worktop and he leaped through the window and into the back garden. As he walked down the steps through the garden, he passed a swing set, slide and a sandbox and as he opened the small gate, he opened it and he looked around and he walked down the dark alleyway and onto the quiet streets of London.
It was snowing outside, not bad for December. The snow would quickly cover Archers tracks, so nobody would be able to follow or track him and he had arranged to hand over the baby to the safty of others. Then finally arriving at Trafalgar Square , he pulled out a small bottle of blood and he put it back in his pocket, he had a job to do and that was to take care of Eve and protect her like he was ordered to by her grandfather Henry Karnstein. A few minutes later, a red double-Decker bus with the words 'Visit the National Gallery' splashed across its side appeared from behind the very attraction it was advertising. It followed the road around the square before disappearing amidst the maze of Victorian buildings that dominated the city centre. As it left, it all went quiet and the baby began to awaken, she was hungry and she would need nourishment and soon and without a mothers care, she would soon perish.
As the night went on, Archer was still sitting at Nelson's Column awaiting the person he had instructed to meet her, wearing his hood, the baby wrapped safely inside it, digging his pocket, he gave her a small potion that had been made for her to turn her human by Henry's royal court witch the Wise Woman. As he heard Big Ben chime, he saw a big black dog with black eyes sitting at the other end of the street. The dog was wearing a stud collar and as their eyes met, the dog walked away and in a puff of purple smoke, he transformed into a very skinny young man with cute brown eyes and clothes that where not meant for this time and dark brown hair and this man was named Oliver.
Oliver was shall we say a person who delivers rare and valuable objects in the supernatural world. His clothes were very Victorian and he was a warlock fresh from Merlin's Academy of witches and wizards. Archer had summoned him by bat to help him to take care of the infant princess. But he had a plan.
"I'd know you'd finally show up eventually Oliver, but a dog" said Archer standing up.
Oliver made a very polite bow.
"It is one of the few things I love to transform into. Being stuck in this pathetic human body is a breeze. The tail I love, But time is of the essence , come with me," he said.
As Archer followed him through London, they passed many shut pubs and night clubs. They saw a group of seven wild feral vampires drinking the blood of a tall blond prostitute on a street corner and as soon as they saw them, the feral vampires hissed and they quickly took off with their meal. Every vampire in the whole entire world was celebrating tonight, not only the birth of the newborn vampire princess, but the ultimate destruction of the most feared vampire in all the world - the beautiful and elegant Lady Cassandra also known as the-dark-lady, the vampire queen. A title that Eve would one day grow to inherit.
Archer and Oliver made their way swiftly through London. Oliver finally stopped outside a grubby little cafe named 'The Dirty Chef"
As Archer looked around, he could smell these nasty humans and read their filthy little minds, he didn't want this at all. He thought him and Eve would go to Fortunia together, where he could live with all the other vampires and raise her properly until she was ready to fulfill her destiny, like she was supposed to . He hated living with all these Breathers and couldn't wait to go right back to drinking normal blood.
"What the hell are we doing here?" asked Archer.
"Keeping our deal with His Royal Highness. Securing our saviours future, at least this way she shall be safe. The vampire world is no the place for her right now. Father Damian is inside the cafe waiting for her. The child must be safe until her birthday, then she will find us and the final battle will begin " explained Oliver.
Archer looked around quickly as he saw people coming out from the pubs and nightclubs and getting into taxi's and he took a deep breath. He wanted to leave Eve in the care of someone who loved her.
"I promised her father I'd take care of her. ' Protested Archer.
". We are quicksilver, a fleeting shadow, a distant sound... our home has no boundaries beyond which we cannot pass. We live in music, in a flash of color... we live on the wind and in the sparkle of a star. You cannot take care of her' Said Oliver.
As they looked inside, all of the lights were on and there was not a single person in sight apart from the waitress and she was sitting on this old man's lap, while he was seemingly kissing her neck. She was giggling. The sign on the purple door said: "CLOSED", they looked around as they went inside.
As they entered the coffee shop, they saw that it was practically empty and the only person in the cafe that they saw a vicar with a big grey beard and copper brown eyes. He had a bible on the table and he had a skinny young blond waitress on his lap. The waitress had her neck turned to him. As soon as he looked up, he took his fangs out of her neck and the woman dropped to the floor. He then wiped his face with his napkin and he then flew he napkin up into the air and it burst into flames and landed on the table as cement.
Then two men slowly made their down to where Father Damian was sitting and they just stood there looking at the woman that was lying on the floor with her eyes wide open and the blood running from her neck and the blood flowing towards the door. With a click of his fingers the shutters of the diner closed and the lights flickered on and off. Damian placed his hands on the table.
"Your late. I had expected you earlier. Henry will be very disappointed, Especially in you Archer," warned Father Damian.
Archer had a disappointed look on his face. He knew very well what Henry had though of him and it was his masters decision to choose him as their secret keep should a situation like this ever happen again
"Please take a seat' said Father Damian as he motioned for them walk over the waitress and to it in the seats opposite him
As the two of them sat down Damian's eyes darted to the bundle in Archer's arms
"Do I ever get to hold the little one that has saved us all?' Father DDamian asked holding out his hands for her.
As Archer handed her over he baby gripped onto him and began to cry and he quickly took her back.
"Now. About the girl . .. " Father Damian started.
Archer really wanted to go and leave Eve with a vampire family and he would come back for her when he time is right. He made a promise, but he didn't want to get tied down with a child for a couple of decades.
"I just .... want to find her a family." Archer explained.
"Very good. I'll take it from here." said Father Damian
"You mean I can't see her again." said Archer upset.
"That's the way it has to be," explained Oliver.
As they walked back to Big Ben, baby Eve was fast asleep in his arms, it was time to hand her over. He knew they would meet again. One day. One day when she was old enough to accept her destiny and he hoped she would forgive him.
Archer bent over the baby and gave her a kiss on the forehead, "I'm sorry" he whispered and he handed her over to Oliver and went off into the night.
As Archer had left the royal gardens, Father Damian and Oliver had taken the baby and they fled to the Royal Hope Hospital as quick as they could. As Archer sat here, little did he know that the decision he made to abandon Eve was to be his biggest regret and and he did not know at the very moment, plans were being made to change Eve's life for the worse. As soon as he came round and he saw that that his most precious cargo was now gone, he thought his life couldn't possibly get worse.
How wrong he was . . . . .
Meanwhile in another part of the hospital, a famous footballer named Jack Taylor was sitting outside the nursery being told news about his unborn baby girl. Eve was in the nursery in the arms of the nurse and it was time to put Father Damian and Oliver's master plan into action straight away and nothing could prepare jack for the words he was about to hear.
" The child is dead. She breathed just for a moment. Then she breathed no more. The child is dead. Dead. The child is dead." the voice echoed through his mind.
"I'm afraid it will kill her. My God, she wanted a baby so much. For such a long time. What can I tell her? What will I say? She wanted her own. She needs her own" pondered Jack as he sat with hands in his face. As he spoke Father Damian nodded to a female nun holding Eve in pink blankets. Father Damian helped him to his feet and led him to the observatory window to where he could see her.
"You could adopt a child. If I may suggest, she even resembles... Your wife need never know. It would be a blessing to her and to the child." he said with a sly grin on his face, he had two problems and he had just used one to fix the other : Jack had lost a child and needed a daughter. Eve needed a mother and a father. With a flick of his fingers the nurse came out and handed him baby Eve.
As the baby lay in Jack's arms, she looked directly at him in the eyes and he felt himself just fly away as he felt and saw her look directly into his eyes. Maybe this could work, he thought to himself. She did look like me and Julia a bit. Those chocolate brown eyes had melted his heart and all he could feel was this love for this new baby girl that was in his arms. That curly dark brown hair that was on her forehead and her beautiful smile, that was as cute as any abay's, it was like she knew something that he did not and it scared him at first. He did have doubts about this as who was the parents of the daughter that he was about to raise. But there was a few questions that was on his mind. Questions he knew that one day Eve would ask when she was old enough that there would be no answer too.
Are there no relatives? He asked
" None. The mother died, as your own child, in the same moment. She was unmarried and her shoe were worn to pieces from walking so far and she died without so much as leaving a forwarding name and address. On this night, Mr Taylor, God has given you a daughter." said Father Damian.
"The body? " enquired Jack
"What's to be gained?" Persuaded Father Damian
So he left.
As he did so the nurse, who was carrying Eve transformed back into Oliver and they both turned into black bats and flew off into the night.
It was time for Eve to live a normal life . . . .
In her private ward, Julia Taylor was leaning up in her bed awaiting news of her baby girl. She had not seen her even once since the nurses had taken her away and put her in observation, her long blond hair was tied back and put into a pony-tale. Her husband had still not turned up. Then she heard the sound of footsteps and crying and she saw her husband and new baby girl arrive in the room.
"Julia. Let me introduce you to our daughter - Eve Elizabeth Catherine Taylor." he said coming in and placing her in her arms.
"One of these days, l'll get me one of those husbands that show up when I actually go into labour." she said looking up from her daughter to her husband, 'So you were late because of another woman. That's nice.' she mocked
"I already told you that t was the G8 Summat and Police Constable Windham had asked me to go undercover to look for a drug dealer - I know what you said . . . . family first. You know drug deals they never go according to plan at all. Sorry' he said grovelling and begging as he sat on his wife's bed.
' Do you remember what you said, the day I found out I was pregnant. You said 'My family is my life' ' she said reminding him
"Come on. l still gotta do my job Julia - '
'And l still got to do mine too.' Julia said sternly.
'I'm trying to keep us out of bankruptcy here Julia," Jack said as he tried not to shout and make Eve cry.
'Look, all l'm saying Jack, is that guy who used to spend all night at the office and barely live in his apartment? That's not you anymore. Now you have to be the guy who's done by six and comes home and hangs out with his family. That's the only way we're gonna work. OK?' she said with her free hand grabbing his hand and holding onto Eve with the other. He kissed her hand gently as he looked at her.
"OK" He leaned over and gave her a kiss."I love you so much. I promise that from now on family first.' said Jack as he kissed his daughter on her head and he then kissed his wife on her cheek as she smiled.
"I love you too." said Julia giving him a kiss on the lips.
None of them noticed a hooded figure in the shadows.
"A wish is a wish. They wished for a baby and a baby they have." he said as he vanished.
Meanwhile outside the hospital, on the roof of Buckingham Palace, Oliver and Damian transformed back into humans and they where sharing a bottle of blood between them and they were waiting on Henry Karnstein to arrive.
Henry Karnstein was the king of vampires and a very fit man for over a thousand years old with a very white hair and a beard. He always wore a royal crown that was sitting on top of his long white hair. He also wore royal robes of red and black with a crest of a moon on his clothing. Not only was he the king of vampires, he was also Eve's grandfather as her father Peter was his son and Lady Cassandra was his daughter.
"Enough blood for me thank you. I need to be heading home. Now, I have work to do, and I believe that our deal is done." said Father Damian placing his glass of bottle down at the side of him and getting up.
'The deal isn't done until he says it's done' said Oliver looking away to the shadows
'Now, now. Patience, please. Our transaction is,uh, nearly complete' said a voice from the shadows
'And are you satisfied with the results your royal Highness?' asked Oliver.
Henry came out of the shadows with a rather disappointed look on his face. He did what was best for his grandchild and yet he was not happy. He had just come to terms that his only son and heir to his throne was gone and the vampires only hope of survival lasted in the hope a baby that was only a couple of hours old.
'Archer did seem rather… Heartbroken." said Henry.
"Yes. How come you did not tell him about the adoption in the first place or the fact that the little princess was supposed to be raised by vampires not humans?" asked Father Damian as Oliver played with his big hat.
Henry didn't say a word
Henry always knew that Archer would abandon his responsibilities at the first hurdle and he always had a back up plan in case something like this ever happened. But he still kept very quiet. The formula that was in Eve's bottle had made her human, but as she did not drink the last drop, she still retained some of her vampire powers. What bothered him was that both of his children were dead both fighting for something he may never could have given them - incalculable wealth and power.
'He is. He bought my speech about giving her a normal life. Now… my property. If you please' said Damian.
"Yeah, here it is. ' Said Oliver handing over a small wooden box
"Do excuse me if I check, will you" Damian said taking the box from him and opening it. He saw a beautiful glistening tiara on a red velvet pillow. It was Cassandra's tiara. He put the box inside his coat pocket. A deal was deal, he handed the baby over to a normal family and he would put Cassandra's tiara away for safe keeping.'It's been a pleasure doing business with you.'
'Oh, the pleasure was mine. Thanks to your efforts, I've made my monster. Now, I do hope you'll be able to make yours.' said Henry as he took a blood bag.
"It was your only daughter that was made a monster, not created as a monster." Warned Oliver." It was her decision to murder a child that she saw as a threat because she imagined her to be a threat. Have you ever heard the saying 'Evil isn't born - it's made' ' said Father Damian with a very evil grin.
Out of nowhere, the pale man's hand snatched forward, seizing Damians's throat. His eyes bulged and his feet left the floor, the colour draining from his face. He coughed and spluttered, his feet writhing in midair. His hands grappled with Henry's wrists, but he soon began to give up as slowly, agonizingly slowly, he turned purple.
Without warning, Henry let go. Damian crumpled to the ground, gasping for breath, feverishly rubbing his neck. His whimpers became pleas and his face seemed to show some sort of recognition as he stared up at the maddened face of Henry.
He shuffled back, squirming and grabbing the hem of the coat one of Oliver. Damian did not move
'Do you have any last words, Damian?' he growled, the menace in his voice barely restrained.
He wiped away the sweat and on his sleeve, bracing himself. 'I hope your Kingdom burns in hell.'
Henry's lips widened into a smirk. 'Wishful thinking.' With that, he pounced forward, his head ducking behind Damian's neck. There was a sickening crack.
He was dead. Father Damian's remains were very limited: his head was separated from his body as well as that Henry ripped out his arms and his legs and he tossed them to different parts of London.
Drops of dark red juicy blood pooled on the floor beneath them and into the cracks between the paving. It seeped outwards, forming a bloody grid. As they saw soldiers coming, they hid and waited, as two young soldiers appeared and in all of two seconds, they were dead. As Henry and Oliver sucked the life out of the two soldiers, they withdrew their fangs and threw the bodies aside like a banana peel.
'Your majesty, are we going to clean this up or just leave it?' said Oliver.
'We'll leave it as a little message for other vampires who think they can make comments like that,' he replied. 'Scum,' he added, spitting on the limp body.
He then noticed something shining in the late fathers hand
Cassandra's tiara. He picked it up and he held it up to the moonlight. It shined like a very rare diamond
"This shall go back to the academy and stay in the family vault, until my granddaughter is ready to accept her destiny" he said putting it back into the box and handing it to Oliver, who placed it in his pocket .
"Yes Your Highness."
'Keep an eye on Archer, wherever he is'
"Yes Your Highness."
For the next few moments all was quiet. Henry played with his royal ring, twirling it around his fingers, the ring he had planned to give to his son. But it was Oliver that had brought him out of his toughts
'Is there anything else you'd like me to do?' Oliver asked.
Henry then took a deep sigh
"Oliver I need you to do me a favor . . . . the bodies of my son and his wife . . . . I need to bury them in the school cemetery' Oliver ordered.
"I'll take care of it." vowed Oliver
As they looked down they a silver car and Jack Taylor was driving. Changing into bats, they quickly flew after the Taylor's car.
As they saw Jack and Julia in their car returning home, they followed the car to a beautiful house that belonged to Jack and Julia and they hid in the trees as they watched them take their "daughter' into her new home. As they went inside and closed the doors and went upstairs to bed, Henry and Oliver flew down from the trees and into the cemetery and they changed back into humans. Henry took a deep sigh of relief as he drank from the blood-bag he had in his long black cape knowing his one and only grandchild would want for nothing and someday she would come back and save them all.
"I'd best be getting off your Royal Highness. Warren and me we're going to go join the celebrations. Are you coming?' He asked.
"No. I need to watch over my granddaughter, you can go if you wish it" admitted Henry as Oliver gave a nod.
"Then I will say goodnight Your Higness' he said as he then changed into a brown bat and he flew off.
As he watched Oliver fly off into the night, Henry looked up at the window that was Eve's room and he gave a little smile.
'Princess your safe now and safe may you stay. For we have a prayer just for you. Grow baby princess, come back some day. Come back and rescue us too," he said in a whispering sort of a lullaby. Hen then placed his giant hood over his head and he stretched his arms out holding his cape.
He then changed into a bat, he was gone.
As the rest of the night went on and the vampire world celebrated, not only the disappearance of the Lady Cassandra but the birth of their savior. As little Eve slept in her new beautiful and expensve moses basket, she slept on , not knowing she was destined to be the future queen of vampires, not knowing that she was destined for greater things. If she would have known that she was to grow up as a rich girl and end up living on the streets as a young woman, she would have cried even louder. But time passes quickly for Breathers when they are happy, for vampires it was the same and the day would soon come when Cassandra would return and the batle for the throne of Fortunia would begin . . . .
