Chapter 11 Jeff's Story
"Thanks for the help; I don't know what I would have done without you. Hey how'd you know that guy's name anyway?"
"Well if you must know I used to live here. He's the reason I'm the way I am."
"What do you mean?"
"Come on Dylan what I have to spell it out for you, he's the reason I only have one leg. It's because of him and that stupid accident that I'm stuck like this for the rest of my life." Jeff was getting agitated and depressed.
"He was my friend believe it or not. He got drunk one night at a party-"
"Jeff you don't have to tell me if you don't want too."
"I'm going to tell you about it anyway. He was drunk so I offered to give him a ride. He said he was waiting for a friend to pick him up. I said ok and got on my motorcycle and headed off towards home. I guess his friend bailed and he decided to drive home. I was six blocks from home when he struck the rear end of my bike next thing I know the bike and I are skidding across the pavement. I remember laying on the ground bleeding. He kept on driving."
"I don't know what to say."
"He's felt bad about it ever since. We're not friends anymore. I could stand living here anymore so we moved to Huston. I don't know what I'm going to do."
"Are you going to be alright Jeff?"
"Yeah I'll be fine. Come on lets go.
We got back in the car and Jeff lit a cigarette. We got back around 12:30. I woke up around 9 the next morning. When I got to breakfast, Jeff wasn't there.
"Hey Davey have you seen Jeff?"
"No I haven't. Have you checked his cabin?"
"No not yet but I think I might know where he is."
I found Jeff smoking behind the barn.
"Come sit," Jeff said patting the ground next to him."
"If I sit down Jeff I'm not going to be able to get up."
"Don't worry Dylan I'll help you up."
I sat down next to him.
"Do you know what today is?"
"Well yes that but that's not what I'm talking about. Today is the anniversary of my accident. Yep three years today."
"I know it's hard but we'll get through it."
Camp ended two days later. Jeff promised he'd text.
