I pushed past everyone and ran to my bedroom. I closed my bedroom door, wanting so bad to lock it. This door only locked from the outside...'for your own protection' as Jeff would say. I sat with my back against the door crying so hard that it was diffiult for me to breathe. I had lost her. I had lost them both. My mom and my dad were both dead. I was alone on this earth. I had nobody to help me fight back against Jeff. I had nobody to help me get away from Adam, who I knew would never let me go. I heard a slight knocking on the door and then Adam's voice asking me to let him in. "Go away!" I screamed through my tears.
"Taylor please! Just let me in," Adam said in a worried tone.
"Go away!" I screamed again. "I just want to be alone..." I whispered the last part but he still managed to hear me.
"I'm not letting you be alone sweetie. Now come on, open up. I don't want to hurt you by forcing my way in," he said as he started to turn the knob to open the door.
"Go away," I whispered desperately. I didn't want to see him now. I should have been here when my mom died, and not at my so-called boyfriend's house! He started to push gently, but forcefully against the door causing me to slide forward. "Please Adam...just leave me alone." He silently closed my bedroom door again and then picked me up bridal style. He cradled me in his arms as I cried into his chest. I forgot about everything he had done to me that day and seeked his comfort.
After I had stopped crying a little bit he said, "Your step dad said that he wants you to come to my house tomorrow morning when he goes to the hospital..."
He was about to say more, but I cut him off by asking, "Why does he have to go to the hospital?"
"Your mother is on life support. Jeff has to go in and sign the papers for them to pull the plug..." he said in an uneasy tone.
"Wait...my mom's alive?" I asked as I looked up at him with hopeful eyes.
"Technically yes, but the doctors think that there is too much damage to her brain for her to ever recover. She will be a vegitable for the rest of her life," Adam explained.
I scrambled off of his lap and ran out of my bedroom to the living room, where Jeff was still talking to the police officers. "She's alive!" I yelled.
"Honey, calm down. You know that your mother never wanted to live like that," Jeff said as he stood up and tried to give me a hug.
"Miracles can happen! Please don't kill her! Please!" I begged as I started to cry again.
