Chapter 5
I dried my hair very, very carefully. This way it wouldn’t get all puffy and dried out looking. I needed to look great.
I threw on a worn out, pink robe and began to get ready. I started with the makeup.
First, I put on my ivory colored foundation. Just in case my usually clear face had anything on it. Then, I applied some blush to give me color. Lots of black eyeliner after that, followed by a pretty pink eyeshadow that complemented my blue-green eyes. Follow that up with a light shimmer powder and we were almost done. The only thing l had left had left was my lips. I just threw on some dark red lipstick. It looked pretty good.
Next, I did my nails. I filled them around the edges to make them look long and oval. I had all different color polishes, but they were all too bright. I settled for black, which ended up looking pretty decent. I finished it off with a clear coat, and they looked shiny and healthy. I was pleased. I repeated this process to my toenails until they looked perfect.
I glanced at the clock. I looked over at my clock on the wall. It read 7:15.
“Mom!” I screamed. I needed to do my hair, and soon. She came jogging up the stairs, already in her new party clothes.
“Time to do your hair, I presume?”
I laughed at her formal language. “Of course.” She was going to curl the whole thing all over, since I couldn’t. She pulled half back into a ponytail and curled it, then left the rest down and curled all that. She pulled my bangs out of the ponytail and straightened them for me.
“There you go, nice and straight.” She took my hand and lead me to the mirror. I looked at my reflection and smiled. My hair and makeup was perfect. I loved the way everything went together. “Oh, close your eyes, I forgot something”
I did as I was told and before I knew it, I was choking on a cloud of hairspray.
“Sorry, hun. I had forgotten to put in hairspray before. Now your curls will hold all night. We don’t want your hair to look messy for Craig, do we?” She smiled and I stared back at her.
“How do you know about that?”
“Oh, Lacey told me. Don’t worry, I like Craig. He’s a nice boy.” She winked and said “Let’s hope things go well tonight.” I laughed and she laughed along with me. Good thing my mom was easy to talk to.
“Okay, oh my. Look at the time. You better put on your dress and touch up your makeup. You have fifteen minutes!”
She ran out of the room to finish getting ready and start up the party music in the back building. I walked over to my closet and took out the long white plastic bag that concealed my dress. Ever so carefully, I unzipped it, and slid it on. I walked over to my jewelry box and took out the pendant I bought the day before. It was a big heart and in the very center, there was a red diamond. Surrounding the red diamond was shiny black ones, and the whole thing was outlined in silver. I loved it.
I slid it around my neck, undid the clasp, then redid it, and positioned it until it hung perfectly off my neck. I put on a diamond bracelet I got for Christmas one year.
Quickly as I could, I slipped into my strappy black heels, touched up my makeup and fast walked out of my room. I couldn’t run, or else my hair would get messed up, and I would most likely trip and fall over my heels.
Carefully, I walked down my porch steps and dashed out back to the building. I couldn’t be late, I needed to play hostess!
Luckily, everything was already set up, and my parents just sat in chairs, talking. The music was loud and upbeat, the colors were beautiful, and all the food looked great. Now I had to sit and wait for the guest to arrive, so I could greet them one by one.
I sat, thinking to myself. I look great tonight, I thought happily. I hope this party will be fun, and I hope Roxy keeps to herself. She will not ruin this night. I swear, she won’t.
But then there was a knock on the building door, and I had a party to run. So, forgetting my troubled thoughts, I sashayed to the door, and put on a smile.
Tonight was my night.
