‘Twas the night before prom, when all through the room
Not a flower was stirring, not even a bloom.
The tickets were placed on the counter with care,
In the hopes that the night would soon be there.
My parents were sleeping all cozy in their bed,
While visions of safe nights danced my mother’s head.
And me in my hairnet with cotton between my toes,
Had just settled down for a good long doze.
When at my window there rose such a clatter,
I jumped out of bed to see what was the matter.
to my window I ran tripping and hurtin’,
tearing open the blinds and pushing aside the curtain.
the moon on the glinting lake,
gave the light to the scene in my wake.
When my doubting eye saw,
A rusty car that should have been against the law.
With a young driver, so active and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be my Nick.
Louder than lions, his engine he did blame,
And he whistled, and sang, and called me by name.
“Now darling! Now sweetie! Now gorgeous and sweet!
O beloved! O dearest! Let us once again meet!
To out your window! To the top of the wall!
Let’s dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”
As dry leaves that before the storms take to the air,
When he meets an obstacle, he sees it as a dare.
So up to my window he climbed,
Like a fairy tale out of my mind.
And then with the shine I saw in his eye,
I wrote a very quick note of goodbye.
As I climbed out the window and fell to the ground,
He landed on the lawn, next to me with a bound.
He was dressed in all leather, from his shoulders to his knees,
In his pockets were coins and jangling keys.
We rushed to his truck, it started with a bang,
And away we sped like a pursued gang.
My parents heard me exclaim, as we drove out of sight,
“I love you all, and I’ll see you tomorrow night!”
