The Old College Try

Poem By: L A Gardner
Young Adult

a lot of people told me many all-too-enthusiastic cliches before I left for college. but, I had my own questions that these pep-talks could not answer. View table of contents...

Just be confident and you'll do well

But inside I'm scared as Hell

Just be yourself and you'll do fine

How much polish before I shine?

It's easy if you play the game

But what if I don't feel the same?

The beginning is the place to start

What if I can't play the part?

Just remember to always try

You can bleed, just don't die

Comments:

I've heard some of the same cliches. I liked how the narrator responded to them with his/her own doubts.

College is about asking questions in response to learning facts.

The narrator may want to consider the following cliche from this humbled, college alumni:

College is the time when you find your voice

But I have two ears and I believe in choice.
