“Come on, Ash. We can’t stop now! We’re almost there!” Thunder roared, flashing on shiny gray eyes that looked for a path amidst the falling rain. The boy seemed to go both right and left trying to find a way through the neighborhood.
“I know, Jayden. Slow down. She’s not going anywhere!” Ash walked right behind his brother, searching for a way a little bit more apathetically.
“Yeah, but I want to get away from this blasted rain and back into the hotel! Why are we searching right now, Ash? Because we have to know right now so we can have things easier tomorrow.” Jayden kept walking looking at every house as he passed them.
“But why do today what you can leave for tomorrow? Come on; let’s just go back, Jayden. We can go home, have some coffee and—”
“You know what? Just shut up! If you wanna go home, then just go! But I want to find her!” Jayden snapped at his already annoying twin brother.
“Oh, I see what this is about.” Ash stopped right in front of a pink house. “I know why you’re looking for her now. It’s not to protect her. You want—”
“Shut up, Ash! I will—” Jayden was interrupted by the sound of a window opening fiercely. The twins ran to the bushes, seeking a place to hide.
The small figure of a girl peeked through the window, her silhouette being defined by the light coming from inside. Ash and Jayden stared up at the room in the second floor where the girl looked down upon them.
“That’s her,” Jayden whispered, “you found her, brother.”
“Yeah, can we go home now?” ash whispered back, getting the girl’s attention to focus on the bush they were hiding in.
“Did you hear something?” Eden looked outside her window into the backyard. She was just having a slight talk with her friend Ivory when she heard twigs snap and many whispers.
“No, not really, what’s wrong?” Ivory walked behind her to look through the window and prove her friend that there wasn’t anything there. She scanned the area intensely, trying to see shadows in the overwhelming darkness.
“I thought I heard someone whisper but they sounded mad. Am I going crazy, Ivory?” She asked, tilting her head to look at her friend from the side.
“Hmm, let me see,” Ivory stepped towards Eden, placing a cold hand on her forehead and tilting her head the opposite side, “oh my, Eden. I think you might be going nuts! Your head is so warm!”
“Stop,” Eden laughed, pushing Ivory’s hand away from her forehead, “it’s just I’ve been hearing whispers all week. They’re outside my window and when I sleep and such. It has me a little paranoid.”
“I noticed. I think you’ve had one drink too many, sweetie. Let’s put the drinks away.” Ivory took a glass from Eden’s hand, taking the last sip from it and placing it on the nightstand. “Let’s just go to bed and not worry until tomorrow.”
“Let’s hope we wake up too. I’ll make coffee.” Eden stepped away from the window and straight towards one of the twin beds in her room. She was staying in her cousin’s room with her best friend and they could each have a bed while her spoiled brat of a cousin stayed in the big guest room.
“Okay, I guess we can just say good night for now.” Ivory closed the window, stopping by the lights to turn them off and walk straight towards the bed, attempting not to fall.
“Good night,” both girls said at the same time and then went straight to sleep.
“Did you see that? We’ve found her! That’s her!” Jayden said to Ash all excited as the twins walked back to the hotel.
“Yeah, I noticed,” Ash walked with his hands in his pockets thinking about this new girl they had to protect. First of all, she was in her room, barely wearing anything but very short shorts and a tank top in a cold night and drinking with her best friend. “Yeah, she’ll need lots of protection. Let’s just hope she keeps her ass out of trouble.”
“Oh, come on, Ash. We live for this. Our lives are all about protecting the apple. So let’s just go along with this and keep her out of trouble and when we’re done we can go home!”
“Yep, that’s what they always say. And then they find someone else to fuck our lives up with.” Ash kept complaining as they reached the hotel room door. He was right, though. Every time they were told that they had a new assignment, they’d say once they were done with it they could go home and pretend to be a normal family with their sister and it would all be over for them. The truth was, though, it never happened. Ash and Jayden hadn’t seen their sister Ninette in over a year. But there was poor little hopeful Jayden thinking that this time they finally would and that everything would be great.
“It’s going to be okay, brother. Let’s just keep this one alive and well. We have a high school to enroll to tomorrow.” Jayden half opened the door to his room. Although the twins weren’t exactly rich, the company would pay for everything they needed in order to guard the new experiment. And if they wanted separate bedrooms, then the company would give it to them along with however much money they wanted to spend. All so they could finish their nasty little job. Ash hated this deeply. He didn’t like being controlled by others but it was all he could do before he was called a Rogue and he himself became hunted by both a Hunter and the company.
“Well, I’m sorry for not being excited. My sorry ass opinion of life doesn’t let me. Let’s just hope this assignment doesn’t give us any trouble this year. We don’t even know what her power is yet.”
“I know, we’ll figure it out. Now just go to bed and I’ll wake you up in the morning.
Eden woke up in the middle of the night, startled at having thought that she had seen a shadow in her room, big white eyes looking at her. She blinked and then the shadow disappeared. She got up, placing her feet on the cold tile and making her way slowly towards the window. This time she looked down only to see a man in a black suit with a bright red tie staring up at her. Goosebumps trailed down her spine and she looked all around to see if there was anything to defend herself.
Seconds later she saw the same shadow in her room and the same white eyes staring at her and then the shadow knocked her down to the tile floor, making her lose consciousness.
