I Shall Always Be There
By Elleswish
It all changed after that night. She held my hand through it. She is all I have left and I love her dearly. A distant tie to my old life. Together we braved the world. The hidden and the newly orphaned.
We were on the way home from a party. Mum, Dad, my older brother Joel and Bree; my teenage cousin. Together we were on a high, dancing and singing like life was no greater. But then it hit us. What goes up must come down. We were no match for the shiny, blue truck. The impact was too much and the car rolled. There was a scream and it all went black.
I woke a day later to a nearby door opening and quietly closing. A hospital door. Sammy she called herself. A secret, illegitimate sister that I had met briefly met but had dismissed as one of dads employees. She broke the news to me as compassionately as possible.
That night I cried myself to sleep and she never left my side, offering a shoulder and tissue, refusing to judge me. Her voice was warm and full of empathy and she always new what to say; just like my father. She took me under her wing and we became close, inseparable. The greatest friend a girl could ever have.
The following year was a blur and I wonder how I survived everything because it seemed life wasn't worth living. I was told I nearly ended it, but there must have still been a bit of hope in the world, because I didn't and still Sammy was there for every moment, giving words of advice. Someone who held my back. I have learnt many important life lessons. You don't know what you have until it is gone.
I was depressed for many months. That is until I met A.J. His real name is Adrian Jay but he claims he hates it because it ages him. The first time I met him was like a bucket of ice being poured over my head. Like returning from a long holiday, I saw the world and life itself through new eyes.
With the help of Sammy and A.J, I am picking up the pieces of my life and trying to make my family proud. I know I have made many mistakes in my short life, but I am trying as hard as I can. I make the most of each day and love like there is no tomorrow.
I am telling you my story so you can see for yourself that life doesn't last forever, only love, friendship and memories do. So like me, live, laugh, love and have no regrets.
