She staggers along the river as her white cotton skirt drags on the ground. She notices nothing, not even that her skirt is becoming tattered and torn from the twigs that reach up from the water. All she feels is the wind in her hair and the grass beneath her feet. She is oblivious to the blood running down her wrists onto the ground. Her balance is off and she feels weak but she also feels completely alive even though she is slowly dying. This is peace, she thinks.
Faintly, she hears her name from behind. She doesn't bother to turn around for she knows who it is. The boy catches up to her and screams at the horrific sight of his love's blood falling helplessly to the ground. She stops and turns to him. She is smiling a pale smile, the blood slowing draining from her body, making her whiter than usual. She falls limp to the ground, finally feeling the effect of the slits on her wrists. He doesn't know what to do with her limp body so he gathers her up in his arms and tells her that everything is okay while he strokes her hair. She touches his face, drying up the last remains of her body's strength. He holds her hand there with his over top, wishing the cold warmth of it would never go away. He feels the last few drops of her blood fall down his shirt and onto his chest.
Why, he wants to know but there is no one there to answer him. He looks down at her. Her eyes are open but lifeless. Her pale pink smile is still on her lips. He kisses her forehead and hugs her tighter. The driver of a passing car sees them and stops. He runs down the bank to the boy holding onto the lifeless girl. He phones in the scene to the local PD then tries to pry the young man off of the dead girl. He screams out "No, no!" but the driver is stronger and pulls him over to the car.The boy surrenders and sits by the back tire, staring in the direction of the girl. She lay still near the edge of the water until the police disturb her body.
