Scout and the Big Girl Problem- a short kids story by Lisa Doesburg
This is Scout. He had a problem. A BIIIIIG problem. As big a problem any boy the age of 8 could ever have..For the third time this month, Scout had a black eye.
Most boys his age would be proud of sporting a cool black eye after whooping some other
boys butt, but not Scout. Because scout wasn't fighting with a boy. He was being bullied by a GIRL. Just THINKING it brought tears of anger to his eyes. A GIRL!! A puny little girl
with blonde hair and blue eyes. Only, she wasn't puny. She was tough. Tough enough to
take his lunch money everyday or his favorite snack. One time, she even took his very favorite
skateboard and threw it in the creek that ran behind the school.
This is Reeanne. Ree for short. One thing Ree looked forward to
doing everyday, was finding that cute boy Scout and torturing him. She didn't know why she did
it. She wasn't a mean girl, not really. But when it came to Scout, she really wanted to just show him how tough this girl could be. It wasn't personal, she didn't HATE him, as a matter of fact, what she WANTED him to do was notice her. So she chose the up close, get in your face, here I am, way to do it. After all, how was he suppose to notice her if all she did was stare in a mirror all day or
whisper and giggle with a group of silly girls at lunchtime.
Scout looked out the window. No Ree. It looked like the coast was clear.
Today his mom packed him his favorite snack and he did NOT want to give it up to Ree, no way. NOBODY was going to have his pizza rolls. He put his backpack on his shoulders and opened his front door. Looked left, then right, clear. Putting his hood up for extra sight protection, he halfed walked, half ran to the corner to cross the street. The school wasnt that far, if he could only make it around the corner, he'd be safe. Jogging now, he looked behind him as he was getting ready to turn the corner, and BAM!!! smacked right into Ree.
"Why don't you watch where your GOING Sprout!", she said with a tough girl look on her face. She placed both hands on his chest and shoved as hard as she could, sending him sprawling backwards on the ground. "Next time, watch where your going, stupid!!"
Scout, who's dad told him it was wrong to hit girls, thought that maybe for the first time in his life, that his father was wrong. He wanted to give this particular girl the biggest whooping of her whole life!
She stood over him, hands on her hips, blue eyes blazing, and then he really looked at her. Hey, he thought, she's kinda pretty. Her eyes wern't just blue, they were this AMAZING blue. Like sparkling blue diamonds. She also had cute little dimples that appeared on each corner of her mouth when she talked or smiled. (something she never did around him unless it was to laugh at him.) Suddenly, he didn't feel scared anymore, and when Ree saw that he wasn't scared, she jumped down and straddled him, getting ready to punch him right in the nose. But when grabbed the front of his hoody with both hands, and pulled him up to slam him, something funny came over her. She never noticed how long his eyelashes were, or what a nice shade of hazel his eyes were. He looked at her gorgeous blue eyes and saw how her eyebrows arched above her eyes like butterfly wings. She gazed at his face, not noticing before how strong the set of his jaw was and or how when he finally smiled, she thought she detected a hint of a dimple in his left cheek.

Suddenly, Scout did something
unspeakable, unHEARD of in the world of 8 yr. old boys..he put both hands on either side of her head, dragged her down to his mouth and gave her the biggest kiss right on her lips!!!!!! Her eyes flew open wide and she just stared at him in blue-eyed amazement. Standing up as fast as she could, her hands balled up into two little fists, she screamed, " I hate you Scout Miller!!!", and ran away as fast as her legs would carry her. Scout remained seated on the ground. I can't believe what I just did, he thought, moaning. He stood up and brushed off his pants. Great, he said to himself, now she's REALLY gonna kick my butt after school. He trudged to school, mentally kicking himself for his impulsive action. The last thought he had before he walked into school was how soft her lips were.
The next day, Scout woke up with butterflies in his stomach. Ree. He knew had to face her sooner or later. He dressed, ate his breakfast, and after a quick kiss for mom, he went out the door to his doom.
She was there. Right there at the end of his walkway. He looked back, ready to bolt. "Hey! " she yelled, "Hey Scout!"
"What do YOU want?" he said, his voice low so his mom didn't hear.."I didn't bring any lunch today, and my mom forgot to give me money".
"um, well," she stammered, "I just wanted to know if you want to walk to school with me".
He looked at her amazed..."You dont want punch me or nothing?", he asked. "I dont hit girls, ya know, never."
"I just thought you were a wuss, " she said, " My mom said that boys should NEVER hit girls, and I just wanted to see if it were true. Looking up at him with the bluest eyes, she said "I'm sorry for beating you up.." .
" I LET you beat me up', He muttered. "You can't REALLY beat me up."
Ree just smiled, flashing those cute mouth dimples that he was starting to really like...(what?). Maybe i'm in love.. or just stupid, he thought to himself.
"Come on!!" she said, taking his hand, making him feel strangly happy inside. "I don't want to be late!"

Wanna play baseball after school?" she asked him.
"yeah, sure, why not?" he answered, tightening his grip on her hand. He looked at again and asked, "Are we boyfriend and girlfriend now or something?"
"Why?", she asked cautiously, "Do you wanna be?"
"Yeah, kinda, your a cool girl, and anyway, it's a lot better then being punched all time." he answered.
She laughed, and he ducked as she pretended to throw a punch at him. "Can't catch me!" she yelled, running away.
"oh yeah? Watch me! " and Scout took off after her..
Ya know? This was going to be a real interesting school year after all, he thought..
