Drinking the Kool - Aid is a metaphor, which was originally derived from the deaths at Jonestown, where the pastor Jim Jones got almost everyone in his congregation to drink poisoned Kool-Aid. Nine hundred and nine inhabitants of Jonestown, three hundred and four of them children, committed suicide out of loyalty to their leader. Drink the Kool-Aid means to become an unquestioning believer in some ideology, or to accept an argument or philosophy wholeheartedly or blindly without critical examination. In other words, a yes man.

In the 1930s and 40s the German people listen to Adolf Hitler and accepted the killing of over 6 million Jews. They drank the Kool-Aid. In Matthew 21:1-11, as Jesus was entering the city of Jerusalem on a colt the people shouted Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!” But within less than a week they listen to the foolish Jewish leaders and shouted crucify Him crucify Him! They drank the Kool-Aid.

Many today listen to the media more than they listen to what the Bible says about abortion and same-sex marriage and other issues. They follow without questioning without a critical examination because they’re drinking the Kool-Aid. When it comes to the liberal media, check out the facts before accepting blindly, don’t drink the Kool-Aid. When a preacher, teacher or writer says to turn from Orthodox teaching and accept worldly wisdom, don’t drink the Kool-Aid. When a teacher ridicules your faith and says the theory of evolution proves the origin of the universe, don’t drink the Kool-Aid. When your employer tells you to leave your faith at home, while allowing others to express their beliefs freely, don’t drink the Kool-Aid. When others bully you or try to silence your beliefs, don’t drink the Kool-Aid. We will be held accountable to God for what we do and don’t do, for what we say and for what we don’t say, so remember, don’t drink the Kool-Aid.
