The Last Leaf

Nearly winter
Trees are bare
But look up high
What have we there?
A single leaf
Is hanging on
When the others
Are long since gone.
A touch of colour
In the sky
You can't help
To wonder 'Why?'
Is it from shelter
Of the rain
That from falling
It could refrain?
Is it cover
From the breeze
That hasn't caused
Its life to cease?
But how much time
Does it have left
Before the tree
Becomes bereft?
Its days are numbered
Nature's sure
There's no escape
There is no cure.
Another hour
Another day
This leafs demise
Is on its way.
And then in spring
More buds are clear
And just look!
More leaves appear
To sway in wind
And bask in sun
But even now
Their death's begun.
