The Beast’s Fable

Spinning, everything is spinning. Yet, I don’t know where I am or how I got here. I can see the dim glow of what must be the last rays of sun, setting ever so slowly behind the horizon. I feel my body being picked off the ground. My attacker, a frail man, with deep black eyes and pale white skin. I don’t have the energy or will to fight the mysterious man off. I stare him straight in the eyes. He lifts his arm and swings at my head.

I wake up in a dark room. My eyes not used to such dark lighting, take several minutes to adjust. I can only pray that the prior events were a dream. I look to my left and see a dank space, with moss growing through the cracking concrete. I don’t recognize this place, not a good sign.  I swing my head around the other way and notice gears, hundreds of them. I am unsure of what these gears are but I know soon enough I will find out. Like someone knew what I was thinking, the gears started turning. And a noise that sounds like two pieces of metal crashing against each other fills the room. I reflexively cover my ears. Then out of the corner of my eye, I notice the ceiling slowly inching its way toward the ground.

I jump up, adrenaline pumping. My palms start to sweat as I try to think of a strategy to stay alive.

I think out loud “I could try and stay low and see if the ceiling comes all the way down. No! No! What am I thinking! If I stay here the ceiling will definitely crush me. ” Then I notice a door. It has a little hallway about two feet long and two feet wide. If I can make it over there in time, I might have a chance. A new surge of energy comes over me. I lunge toward the gap and make it in. The ceiling hits the ground with a loud thud. I am hoping the decision I made wasn’t my last. Several minutes later I am still waiting in the tiny room. My heart stops racing but a new emotion floods over me, fear. I try to stay optimistic but it is very hard. My mind always wanders back to the fact that I may die down here. Finally the door opens with a “click.” I turn around and push. Standing in front of me, the Beast, a ferocious creature that could kill with ease. It has razor sharp claws and teeth that could saw someone in half.

I immediately run back into the room from which I came. After my first glance of the room that the Beast stands in, I notice windows. I know that someone obviously planned on another person getting trapped in this room. And they also plan on someone finding their way out. I count to three. “One, Two, Three!” I run out of the room, as fast as I can go. The Beast turns its massive head in my direction. I freeze paralyzed by the beady eyes and the bloody teeth. Suddenly it charges at me, no doubt ready to kill. It grabs me with it’s claws and squeezes. I feel myself slipping away. Away from the light, away from reality.
