The Value Of Friendship.

How can I explain the value of friendship
To those who have not experienced the lack of it.
To have no one to talk to
No one to phone
Only those with whom you share your home.

Familiarity breeds contempt so they say
You become furniture to those always in you life
A hindrance
Always in the way
Just a misunderstood encumbrance.

Slowly you start to lose your sense of self
You lose touch with who and what you are
No one to share
No one to care
There's hardly any point of thought.

And then it's straight down to a deep dark pit
Of despair, of strangled ideas and emotions plagued
By demons
By scavenging crows
Feeding on your nothingness.

So far down there's no way to get out
The climb is too great for a person to ascend
Going solo
Unaided
So darkness descends.

It's sticky like treacle or hot molten tar
It holds you firmly in its monstrous arms
Smothering
Strangling
Your will to live.

When you are ready to give up, give in,
One person holds out their hand and says
They'll help
They'll care
They'll be your friend.

It's hard to know just what to do
Sadness has become such a familiar part of you
Could you
Even dare
To trust their words.

So many times you have been stabbed in the back
Treated like a worthless, unthinking human being
Unnoticed
Unlovable
Just someone who is there.

But now there is someone who seems to see
Some sort of individuality, personality, existence
Someone that
Once was you
Before you were suffocated.

Somebody wants to know what you think
Wants to share a joke, a smile, a conversation
They tell you
They care
And maybe they do.

Will you believe them and reach up for their aid
In climbing up out of that deep sided pit called despair
Are you willing
To hope?
Are you going to dare?

It is just too hard to go on all alone so you take a chance
You let somebody through the defences you've so carefully built
You hope
You dare
You allow yourself to care.

But friendship must be freely given, not forced, coerced
Either growing strongly or shrivelling away to nothingness
Thriving
Or sliding
It can't be decided.

The value of friendship is to be accepted as 'you'
To be treated as equal, to know someone is there
Who will help
Who will care
And will always be there.

Life is a hard enough struggle for everyone to make
But a friend can help when it all gets to be too much of a fight
You can try
Not to cry
Now a friend is near.
