HILDA’S LAMENT

Hilda Huff was livid.

The tranquil environment that she had enjoyed for so many years, was to come to an end.

Her long-time neighbor, Bill Raspier, did not seem to mind the impending upset. He had worked as an industrial plant manager up until his retirement in the year 1998, and thunderous blasting and ear piercing screeches had always been part of his working day.

But what about the young couple that had just arrived, Hilda thought, the couple with the little boy? Their name had not been posted yet. Surely they hadn’t signed a contract knowing their view would be so horrendously obstructed.

In Hilda’s mind, City Hall’s push for the extended subway plan was outrageous. And adding insult to injury, the subway tracks were going to be above ground, making any attempt at having polite conversation with neighbors, impossible.

Someone had to put a stop to this atrocity, but Hilda knew it was already too late. Two months ago, the proposal had been ratified and construction had already begun. The blossoming lilac and sycamore trees were gradually shielded from view, as the walled cement barriers edged higher and higher.

And what about poor Lottie?

Hilda knew that of all of her neighbours, Lottie Sears would be the one most devastated.

After all, Lottie had been here the longest. She had been here since 1861.
