”It’s time to go to sleep, girls!” said Catherine’s mom. I was staying the night at their home. “Yeah, yeah,” Catherine said.

To be honest, I wasn’t sleepy. I know that Catherine is a big sleepy head. However, I barely sleep, and I wake up early.

Since Catherine lives in this house, it’s only appropriate that she gets the bed. I was told to sleep on the mattress, which Catherine’s mom laid out earlier this evening.

The sheets felt soft against my skin and they calmed me down. My t-shirt and shorts were comfortable and I was ready for a good night’s sleep.

After a few minutes, I could hear Catherine’s soft snoring. She’s already asleep?! I thought.

The mattress was opposite to the small and only window in the bedroom. The curtains were open, and the moonlight was shining right in my face.

I never liked the dark, so I welcomed the moon with a smile. It made me feel safer somehow.

I tossed and turned on the mattress to find a good position, but failing miserably. The pillow was excessively soft for my taste and my head was sinking through it. I felt hot under the blankets, so I pushed them off. I laid staring at the white ceiling, soon I realized I was cold.

I couldn’t stop restlessly moving on the floor. After more turning I was facing Catherine’s bed, rather, what was under it.

I saw a bunch of art supplies and what I thought was a guitar. The darkness of the night made it difficult to see clearly.

“What the-?!” I whispered and sat up. I swear that I just saw something move under there. After concluding that it was just my mind playing tricks on me. I laid back down, this time facing the door.

Catherine’s quiet breathing calmed me down. I didn’t feel alone and closed my eyes.

How long was I laying on the floor? I didn’t know anymore. I couldn’t fall asleep and my mouth was dry. I decided to go to the kitchen and grab a glass of water.

I tip toed out the bedroom, through the halls, past the doors, into the kitchen.

Catherine’s house was cozy. There were several rooms where I haven’t been in. I didn’t feel like snooping around though.

I quietly opened the cupboard and took out a glass. I took hold of the jar full of cold water and slowly poured it in. The water reached a halfway point and I set the jar back down.

Enjoying the crystal liquid go down my throat, I closed my eyes. I stopped to take a breath and almost dropped my glass as I saw a shadow glide across the floor.

“Seriously, brain? You there? You really need to calm down,” I quietly said to no one in particular.

When I was done with my water, I rinsed the glass and set it to dry.

Stealthily sneaking down the hallways I looked both ways. I was paranoid, and every noise made me jump. I was acting like a scaredy-cat, but I couldn’t help it.

When I reached Catherine’s bedroom, I slowly turned the handle, and closed the door behind me.

I froze. On the bed, I didn’t see Catherine. I saw a slender creature with black scaly skin. Its eyes looked darker than the night. I couldn’t stop staring into them. They sucked me in, my very existence.

Such beautiful eyes, but the smile, sheesh, I thought.

The creature’s teeth were yellow and sharp, even though some were missing, and others cracked. Its jaw was hanging open, like the muscles were stretched and the mouth can’t be closed, I found it disturbing. Its fingernails were dull and rusty. The creature was sprawled on the bed and didn’t move. I didn’t move either.

Both of us in complete silence, waited for the other to move. The tension in the air was suffocating and the room felt colder than it was before.

A scent reached my tiny nose. It was unbearable. It smelled like twenty rats died in a sewer, started to decompose and I stood and inch away from the scenery taking deep breaths.

I couldn’t help but make a disgusted face, as soon as I did that, the creature propped itself upright.

Slowly but steadily, it closed the distance between us. I stood still and barely breathing. Not taking any action, I waited for what was going to happen next.

Now, the creature was five centimeters away from my face and I could feel its breath on my skin. Now, the stench coming from it became stronger, but I stood my ground. Not moving a muscle, I waited.

The creature’s face came closer. I could feel it almost touching me. Its mouth was so very close to my ear. I felt something wet brush against my earlobe. I tensed up as I realized it was the creatures tongue.

At this point more disgusted, than scared, I felt like landing a punch straight into the creatures face.

“Hey there,” the creature purred into my ear. Its voice was seductive. It wasn’t dry or scary, like I expected it to be. I closed my eyes and imagined a good-looking man, maybe in his twenties.

When I opened my eyes, the creature was in front of my face once again. However, this time, its mouth wide open, ready to consume me.

The pain was incredible. The creature’s teeth bit into my skin and my wine red blood poured onto the floor. I tried to scream, but nothing came out.

“Relax, it’s just a dream, you can calm down.”

I shot up in my bed, gasping for air and clutching the blankets. My skin felt like it was on fire. I wiped away my sweat and tried to calm my racing heart. I processed the dream I just had, and listed the facts why it couldn’t be real.

I carefully scanned the room. Making sure Catherine was still on her bed, I laid back down, and relaxed my muscles.

The void under Catherine’s bed terrified me, so I turned my back facing it. I loosened my body and closed my eyes. Slowly drifting off to sleep I felt calm. I froze once again.

“This time, it isn’t a dream.”
