Sunset had passed. The evening street lamps glowed brilliantly in the night sky. Jogging along the uphill footpath, I began to feel exhausted from the distance I had covered. I was streaming with sweat- it looked like I had just had a shower!

Cicadas’ voices sang out relentlessly. House were lit up like luminous lanterns. The moon sat peacefully and proudly in the spotlight of the sky, with shy stars staring at it in awe. Approaching home, I realised that there were no lights on. My parents said that they definitely would be home when I was back. I quickly ran over to our carport- my parents’ rusty old cars were still there. A crowd of cars were parked, hidden away in a nearby street. This definitely wasn’t normal.

All our curtains were closed and the house was completely silent. A ghostly tingle reverberated through my bones. Curiously, I slipped through the side gate around to the back of the house. No sign of anything. Maybe aliens had abducted my parents? What if there were robbers here? Or maybe this was just a stupid prank? With trembling legs, I ran back to the front.

I felt like I was in a horror movie, the ones were everything is silent and dark and the suddenly there’s a loud shriek and a monster appears. I felt hopeless, like a mouse trapped in a lion’s den. But I still had to face the reality, I couldn’t just stand here like a dead tree, I had to open the door. Thoughts raced through my head like cars at the Grand Prix. Dizzy with unclear thoughts, I strode up to the front door. I peered through the keyhole. All was pitch black.

I wasn’t going to be a wimp. I would face the fears and dangers that awaited me. Even if, right behind the door, was a maniac with a rocket launcher- I would fight like an honoured hero. I grabbed out the shiny silver key and pushed it into the keyhole. I turned the key, and realised- the door was already unlocked. Suddenly, a strong gust of icy cold wind pushed the door open. My heart thudded against my ribs, like an enraged prisoner trying to escape from behind his bars. The door creaked loudly and then slowly halted. My brain froze. For a brief moment, the whole world stood dark.

All of a sudden, heavenly rays of light poured into the room. The light lit up balloons on the walls and ceiling, of all imaginable colours and shapes. Then, assortments of kaleidoscopic streamers followed with chairs, sofas and tables. On the tables were piles and piles of scrumptious food and in the middle, a chocolate cake with twelve glittering candles. Looking around, I saw friends’ and families’ bright and cheerful faces smiling and laughing jokingly at my dumbfounded expression. I smiled gratefully and laughed so heartily that I couldn’t breathe. All my fears had disappeared in a split-second. It was my birthday!
