“A paid vacation day? The trip is free too? Why not!?” Ponty thought as he arrived at the hotel. He saw several cars, wondered how many people were already there, and secretly hoped there wouldn’t be any children. When he walked in the doors he saw four people loitering in the lobby, two people getting room keys, and one person walking up the stairs. “Seven people? That won’t be that bad.” As Ponty was walking to get his room key, he saw a very clingy couple walk in practically attached at the hip. He was a little disturbed by that so he quickly went up the stairs to his room. In the hall he passed an attractive girl in skinny jeans and converse. He made a mental note to talk to her later.
As Johanna walked towards the stairs she passed a very handsome man in a button up shirt and khaki shorts. She politely smiled at him and took note to “take a selfie” later with him “accidentally” in the background and send it to her friends. She walked down the stairs and started to go into the parlor, but stopped when she felt someone staring at her. She looked around but didn’t see anyone looking at her. There was only two people in the room, a girl wearing all black and the guy she was talking to.
Cosette had barely looked away before the girl had turned around. She was a little worried that the girl had caught her staring but shook it off. She turned her attention back to the guy talking to her. She soon realized that he was hitting on her so she rolled her eyes and walked away from the guy in the bro tank.
Brad was dumbfounded. What had he done wrong? He was being pretty smooth if he did say so himself. He didn’t get down on himself because he usually doesn’t go for the dark, emo girls. He looked across the room and saw his type of girl walking in. She was wearing a baggy sweater, leggings, boots and glasses and was carrying books. He started to walk towards her.
Maria timidly stepped into the room avoiding all eye contact. She looked and saw a guy walking towards her. She didn’t want to talk to him so she quickly turned around and went back into the parlor. He followed her in there so she scanned the room for someone else to talk to. She spotted a girl wearing a nice dress and a cross necklace, who was also holding a book. She went and took a seat next to the girl.
Tracy looked up when she felt the seat next to her concave. She put down her bible and sighed. The girl was asking her what she was reading. She didn’t answer, rolled her eyes, and went back to praying. She was secretly praying for the couple sitting way too close to each other.
Rocky could sense the disapproval but he didn’t care. He scooted closer to Janet. She sat in the tight clothes he had told her not to wear. Janet knew what Rocky was thinking. He had told her not to dress like a harlot. She loved to annoy him. She was ignoring everyone else until that girl with blue hair and ripped skinny jeans coughed when they were about to kiss.
Rizzo did not want to watch them fondle each other anymore so she coughed as loud as she could. The couple turned to glare at her. It was very entertaining to her. “Nice one.” She heard a voice say. She looked up to see a kind of attractive guy with baggy clothes and stoner face.
Roger hadn’t said more than two words to this girl and he could already tell that he liked her. He tried really hard to not look high because some people didn’t appreciate that. He could tell by the look on her face that he wasn’t doing a very good job. He was about to speak again when a voice came over an intercom announcing dinner.
Rizzo was the first to reach the dining room and found that they had assigned seats. She found that she was sitting next to some people named Johanna and Cosette. Once everyone was seated they began to eat.

Ponty got a little excited when he saw he was sitting next to the attractive girl he passed in the hallway. He got enough courage to talk to her.
“Um, hi.”
“Oh, hello.” Johanna said politely
“What’s your name?”
“It’s Johanna. Haven’t I seen you before?” She asked even though she knew she had
“Ha-ha yeah, I think I passed you in the hall.” He answered even though he didn’t have to think about it
“So, do you have a name?” Johanna joked
“Oh, yea. I do. Wait, what was it again?”
“Could it be Mr. King?”
“Nah, that’s my dad. Joe King.”
“Punny, I like it.” Johanna thought
“My name is J. Pierpont Finch.” Ponty told her
“Sounds like I’m calling you… Ponty.”
Wow, his first nickname. As a child people just called him Finch. Ponty gazed dreamily at Johanna as she made an attempt to tell some jokes. She was in the middle of the worst one so far when someone screamed. Everyone turned to see Roger face down in his food. Janet was the one who had screamed because no one just falls face first into their food with their eyes open. Cosette reached over and felt for a pulse but there wasn't one. He was dead and no one knew why. Rocky started the arguing by accusing Cosette. Soon everyone was yelling over the top of each other. Maria stood up and loudly pointed out Roger’s obvious signs of drug addiction.
“So you're saying he overdosed?” Rizzo questioned
“Possibly but I'm not certain.”
“I'm still keeping an eye on that scary chick.” Rocky loudly whispered to Janet.
Cosette stood up and stormed out of the room after hearing that. The room was very awkward after that so everyone dispersed. Johanna entered parlor to find Rocky, Janet, and Brad in there. Johanna grabbed the TV remote and flipped the TV on. She was channel surfing as Brad was flirting with her from across the room. Johanna was doing her best to ignore him but he was persistant. Ponty entered and saw Brad bothering Johanna so he began a conversation with Brad to distract him. Johanna, relieved to be left alone, turned on a rerun of the 90’s sitcom, Friends, but could barely hear it over the sound of Rocky and Janet kissing.
“I’m sorry. I didn't realize that I turned to the porn channel.” Johanna declared, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
“There’s a porn channel?” Brad asked slightly excited.
“Oh, yea that's right I didn't.” Johanna said ignoring Brad.
“So if you could get a room that'd be great.” Ponty said surprising himself by intervening.
“Oh, hey, Ponty guess where you can get one of those room thingies.” Johanna said, surprised he had intervened.
“Where?”
“At a hotel. Isn't it just convenient that we are in one?” Johanna snarked
“You know, it really is.”
“Okay, sarcasm aside. Go to your room to do that...ya nasty.”
Janet humphs as she leads Rocky out of the room. Fifteen minutes later, Cosette enters and announces that Janet and Rocky are dead. Everyone was in such hysterics that no one stopped to question how she knew they were dead. Finally everyone was calm and they began discussing the death and then the banging started. It was a simple yet terrifying rhythm. Three knocks on each door moving quickly down the hall. By the time the knocking had gotten half way down the hall, Brad mustered up enough courage to walk partially up the stairs and see who was in the hall. When he came back he was as white as a ghost.
“What was it?!” Rizzo asked
“Nothing. Literally no one was there.” Brad answered
“Rut Ro Raggy.” Johanna joked
Everyone rolled their eyes and groaned. Then the banging started at the top of the stairs.
“Let’s” Rizzo began.
“Get” Johanna interrupted.
“Out Of” Brad continued.
“Here” Maria shouted.
“Like Now” Ponty finished.
They all ran to the kitchen. They collapsed on the floor out of breath. As soon as Tracy stood up to close the door, it slammed and locked itself. Then there was darkness. The lights had gone out! Rizzo was beginning to speak when a door somewhere else in the kitchen slammed shut. Ponty screamed a feminine scream and grabbed the person close to him.
“Get off!” Maria commanded.
“Sorry. I thought you were Johanna.” Ponty apologized.
“Where is Johanna?” Rizzo wondered.
“Well I don’t…see her.” Ponty says trying to be funny.
“Oh, sorry guys. I’m right here.” Johanna says touching Ponty’s hand.
That’s when they heard the banging again but this time it was different. It was no longer a rhythm it was just relentless knocking. It wasn’t getting closer like the one that had been in the hall, it was staying in the same place. In the darkness they tried to find the source and failed. They sat silently for the next four hours waiting for the lights to come back on. By the time the lights had come back on the knocking was much quieter but they could barely follow it. The noise led them to a large freezer towards the back. It took the strength of five people to get the door open but it was a good thing they took the time to open it. Inside lying on the ground was Brad, barely alive. They quickly pulled him out and wrapped him in random aprons they had found.
“Brad, are you okay?” Ponty asked
“C-c-cold… so col-l-ld.” Brad stammered
“How did you get in the freezer?” Rizzo questioned
“I…I g-g-got p-p-pushed.”
“Do you know by who?”
“N-n-not exactly.”
What was the last thing you remember before being locked in?”
“Th-he last t-t-t-thing I saw wa-a-a-as black-k-k shoes and…”
Suddenly Brad stopped, his whole body relaxed, hypothermia had claimed him. Four people were dead and no one knew who was next, or did some one? They didn’t know what to do with his body so they just left him there and went to the parlor.
The lights in the parlor weren’t working properly so Ponty began to search for flashlights. Soon everyone joined in the search except for Cosette who left the room to check other lights. Johanna couldn’t seem to find any flashlights but remembered that she had some in her room.
“Guys, I know where to find some flashlights.” Johanna announced
“Perfect. Where?” Rizzo asked
“In my room.”
“Why would you have flashlights?”
“Maria, would you mind going and getting them? It’s room 221.” Johanna asked ignoring the question.
“Ummm, sure.” Maria says taking the room key.
Maria slowly walked up the stairs, weary of the previous noises. She arrived at room 221 and fumbled with getting the key in the keyhole. She quickly pushed open the door and saw a room identical to her own. Maria laughed at herself for being so scared and began to look for the flashlights. She was checking the drawers when she heard a faint noise.
Downstairs in the parlor, they heard a bloodcurdling scream. Everyone stopped dead in his or her tracks. When Cosette walked in Tracy was shaking and Rizzo was trying to calm her.
“Boy, she sure does scream loud.” Cosette laughed.
“What did you do to Maria?” Rizzo yells, shoving Cosette.
“Nothing!”
“You’re lying! It’s your fault that Brad is dead too!”
“Why do you say that?”
“You were awfully quiet when the lights went out.”
“And?”
“And, he said he saw black shoes.” Rizzo points down at Cosette’s shoes.
“Johanna has black shoes too.”
“Johanna would never hurt anyone!” Ponty yells.
“And, you were the only one not in the room when Maria screamed.” Rizzo finishes
“Why do you refuse to acknowledge that it could be Johann…”
“Enough! Johanna didn’t do it.” Ponty says defensively
Cosette stormed out of the room and Tracy followed. Rizzo secretly made a note not to rule out Johanna just yet. She wrote it in her pocket notebook, which she had been keeping notes in all night. She didn’t see Johanna staring at the notebook while she was writing in it.
Ponty and Johanna walked into the hall where the lights were flicking and saw Tracy. Ponty was starting to sit down next to her when a voice came over an intercom.
“Everyone is to report to their room. There is a surprise waiting.”
Tracy jumped up, ran to her room and flung the door open. Inside she saw something that she hoped she would never see again. The lights began to flicker faster. Ponty’s ears were filled with Tracy’s screams. He reached out for Johanna but he hands met only air. When lights came back on Ponty could see Tracy on her knees praying. He relaxed because she seemed okay…until he saw the knife in her back.
“Well someone here is a real backstabber.” Ponty thought
He pinched himself for thinking such a crude joke right now. Everyone noticed the blood splatters on Cosette but only Rizzo saw the blood specks on Johanna. Nobody yelled or panicked this time they just slowly split up. Rizzo went back to her own room, Cosette went to the bathroom, and Ponty followed Johanna into the parlor. Ponty turned on the TV just as Johanna excused herself to go to her room.
Rizzo was reading through her journal once more when she finally saw the connections. She got up and ran to get Cosette. As she ran into the hall she bumped into Johanna and unknowingly dropped her journal. Johanna picked it up, took it to her room and read it. Johanna, after finishing, quietly slides it back under Rizzo’s door. Rizzo couldn’t find Cosette so she began to walk towards the stairs. She started to jog down the stairs when a black shoe tripped her. She was dead before she hit the last step.
Ponty walked towards the steps to look for Johanna, when he saw the body he fainted. Johanna tried for ten minutes to get him to come to. He slowly opened his eyes and sat up. When he was okay enough to walk, they began wandering around the hotel. Ponty was unsure if they were searching for Cosette or running away from her. Johanna told him that they were searching for her. Johanna suggested they split up and search different halves of the hallway. He agreed and began to search the far end. He was walking out of Tracy’s old room when Johanna poked her head out of Rizzo’s old room and called to him.
“I found her!”
“’Kay. I’m coming.” He called, jogging to the room
“She’s not alive but I found her.”
“Her throat’s slit.”
“Well thanks, Sherlock.” She teased
“It looks pretty fresh.”
“I guess she wasn’t the killer.”
“Should we leave?”
“Yes. I’ll meet you in five minutes by the door and we’ll go together.”
Ponty raced off to his room to collect his stuff. He couldn’t believe this was happening, he was so excited. Once all of his stuff was repacked he ran down the stairs and to the front door. There he found Johanna fixing her lipstick.
“Are you ready to go?” He asked trying to seem calm
“Yes I am, but one thing….”
Johanna stood on her toes and they kissed. For one brief moment Ponty was happy. Johanna watched his dead body hit the ground as she mentally checked him off her list. She grabbed his legs and drug him out of the hotel. Once the rest of her hotel was clean she could almost relax. She had one thing left to do. She sat down at her desk and began writing out new invitations. Maybe this time she would send out thirteen, she had heard it was an unlucky number…
